Natalie Walters' Lights Out--Rader Friday; Mt.1:21

Natalie Walters’ Lights Out is this week’s Reader Friday. Here’s the first line: “Seif El-Deeb watched the trio of American boys cross the street away from Cairo American College.”

Now for the photo and scripture. The photo is from Unsplash–Akhil Lincoln. I wanted a night photo and could imagine the night in Bethlehem when Christ was born was like the one in this photo. I truly hope everyone has a wonderful, safe, and peaceful Christmas as we remember Him.

Now, here’s the back cover copy of Lights Out.

CIA analyst Brynn Taylor developed a new program to combat terrorism, and she invited members of foreign intelligence agencies to America to foster cooperation between countries. Now one of them, Egyptian spy Remon Riad, is missing.

Jack Hudson has been working for the Strategic Neutralization and Protection Agency (SNAP) for almost nine years and takes the lead in hunting down the missing spy. But he isn’t at all pleased to find out Brynn is involved. It’s hard to trust a woman who’s already betrayed you.

Every lead they follow draws them dangerously deeper into an international plot. Kidnapping, murder, explosions, poisoning–the terrorists will do anything to accomplish their goal of causing a digital blackout that will blind a strategic US military communications center and throw the world into chaos.

Can Brynn surrender control to a man who doesn’t trust her? And can Jack ever get over what she did to him? The fate of the world–and their hearts–hangs in the balance.

MY TAKE:

I really enjoyed this book of intrigue and heart-stopping twists and turns.

CIA analyst Brynn Taylor has an agenda–stopping terrorism so that no family will suffer the way hers did after 9/11 when her father was almost killed. Because of this, she is married to her job and rarely even relaxes.

One of the ways she thinks terrorism can be stopped is to create a program for intelligence security officers from different countries to come together and share information. In other words, she brought spies together to share secrets. And then one of them goes missing.

Not only is America at risk from a terrorist attack, but her reputation and job is at stake. If that weren’t enough, she also has to work with Jack Hudson, the man she left behind. Jack feels Brynn betrayed him when she chose the CIA instead of him.

The suspense is high in the story and every time I thought I had it figured out, something happened to prove me wrong. I enjoyed watching Brynn and Jack slowly trust each other again. This is the first book in the SNAP series and the secondary characters are really interesting. I particularly liked Kekoa–he was a hoot! I can’t wait for the second book in the series to come out!

Now for the answers to the Mystery Question (I’m not going to make you wait until after the first of the year to find out which one I made up. lol):
  1. In England, a shoplifter was picked up after stealing a bottle of vodka from a liquor store. It didn’t take Sherlock Holmes to find him, though. His name and phone number were left with the clerk—after asking her out on a date.
  2. A man walked into a Baton Rouge, Louisiana, hotel and asked the clerk for a room. The clerk wasn’t a clerk—he was a state trooper. And the hotel was actually a state trooper station. That’s when he was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.
  3. A bank teller in South Wales ripped off the bank where he worked, but he wasn’t completely dishonest. He left a note in the safe: “Borrowed, seven million pounds”—then signed his name.
  4. The burglar cased the London house for a week, noting that the owners left every morning by eight and didn’t return until six. He arrived at the house at three and soon had three bags parked at the back door. When the grandfather clock chimed four times, he decided to take a break and have afternoon tea. What he didn’t know was the owner checked the security camera every afternoon at four and caught the burglar at the table, drinking tea and eating a sandwich. Police were quickly dispatched.
And the answer is…#4. Congrats to everyone who answered correctly!

Crosshairs

Investigative Services Branch (ISB) ranger Ainsley Beaumont arrives in her hometown of Natchez, Mississippi, to investigate the murder of a three-month-pregnant teenager. While she wishes the visit was under better circumstances, she never imagined that she would become the killer’s next target–nor that she’d have to work alongside an old flame.
After he almost killed a child, former FBI sniper Lincoln Steele couldn’t bring himself to fire a gun, which had deadly and unforeseen consequences for his best friend. Crushed beneath a load of guilt, Linc is working at Melrose Estate as an interpretive ranger. But as danger closes in on Ainsley during her murder investigation, Linc will have to find the courage to protect her. The only question is, will it be too little, too late?

I can imagine this picture being a starry night over Bethlehem. The Scripture is perfect. Every time I read this verse, my heart gives a little flutter. Jesus! There is power in that name.

I really enjoy Natalie’s books and don’t have this one yet. It looks like a real page turner. After reading your review, I’m certain when I do get it, it will keep me up till the dawn.

I cannot believe I FINALLY guessed the correct answer on the crimes!! What a moment! Lol

Merry Christmas, Pat, and to each of you “guessers” who participate each week. God bless.

That photo was a great choice for that verse. Those shepherds were so honored to have the Good News spoken directly to them that night. What would it have been like to have been one of them?

Pat, you beat me to the first line of the book I just finished last night! “Lights Out” was yet another of the best Christian suspense books of the year. I could not say it better than you did in your “take” of it. I am so looking forward to Ms Walters’ next book.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to each of you!
