Romans 12:2 What I'm Reading Friday ~ Autumn Vindication

Romans 12:2 is the verse that came to mind with this butterfly photo. Who would think an ugly caterpillar could transform into a beautiful butterfly? We are like the caterpillar. If we focus on God’s word, we can transform into something beautiful. I thought the photo and verse were perfect for the What I’m Reading Friday ~ Autumn Vindication post.

And now for Autumn Vindication by Sally Jo Pitts. I really enjoyed this story. It was easy to root for a washed-up Alabama Bureau of Investigations detective and a teacher-turned-PI who is recovering from her mother’s death. But first, here’s the back cover copy:

A private investigator and amateur sleuth make an unexpected autumn discovery

Private Investigator Robert Grey, a former state agent with a tarnished reputation, and his intern Jane Carson arrive in Pine Bluff, AlabamaWhat I'm Reading Friday ~ Autumn Vindication: A private investigator and amateur sleuth make an unexpected autumn discovery. Initially working a voter fraud case, they find themselves in the middle of a homicide and their client, the local sheriff, is the prime suspect.

As a result the two are pitted against Robert’s nemesis and challenged with finding a murderer as they grapple with career doubts of their own. A maze of suspects and hidden motives will keep the reader turning the page.

My Take:

Sally Jo Pitts does a great job with this story, bringing her expertise as a private investigator into it. Jane Carson left her job as a kindergarten teacher to care for her mother and is adrift after she dies. Since she’s not ready to go back to teaching kindergarten, she takes a job with Robert Grey as his secretary/assistant. While she’s learning the ropes, she takes the reader along on her journey as Pitts reveals inside information on being a private investigator.

When voter fraud morphs into murder, Robert isn’t sure he’s made the right choice of starting a private detective agency. At the same time, Jane questions leaving the job she’s spent years working in. Along the way, Jane finds her calling and Robert learns key truths about himself.

The mystery itself is intriguing and will keep the reader turning the pages to see who the murderer is! While there is no romance yet, I hope a relationship between Robert and Jane surfaces. Readers will enjoy this mystery with likeable characters and an interesting setting. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Pat, love the photo of a butterfly on lantana. You could have photographed that in my yard! The caterpillar to butterfly metaphor is a great one, too, fitting the Bible verse perfectly. I’m interested in that book. Thanks for featuring it. Looks like I’m going to have to try do the Kindle to Nook conversion :-). Caterpillar to butterfly?

The caterpillar reminds me of how God changes us when we first ask Him in our hearts, and how He continually changes us as we serve Him and want to be more like Him. I love that picture in my mind 🙂

I see this book is available on Kindle Unlimited, so I’m putting on my “to borrow” list…which gets longer every day it seems…lol! Thanks for the recommendation and review. Sally is a new-to-me author!
