Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

I’m catching up on my TBR table and the story I read this week is from 2016 ~ A Tapestry of Secrets. One thing I gleaned from this, is your secrets will find you out! It’s a great book and kept me up until 1:30…

Here’s the back cover copy:

This Decade-Spanning Novel of Family and Faith Will Delight

Now in her eighties, Perla Phillips has carried a secret since she was eighteen years old. When she sees her granddaughter, Ella, struggling for perfection, she decides to share her secret to show that God can use even the biggest mistakes for good. But before she can reveal what happened during that summer sixty years ago, she has a debilitating stroke.

Carrying a secret of her own, Ella arrives back in Wise, West Virginia, to help her aunt Sadie care for Perla. Both know the woman wanted to tell them something, but she’s now locked in silence. Together they begin looking into the past, but they may learn more than they expected.

Will they have the courage to share their hearts? Or will the truth remain buried forever?

A Tapestry of Secrets drew me in from the first page. Ella Phillips wants to escape the city where she lives after her ex-fiance stalks her. When her grandmother has a stroke, she uses that as a reason to return home.

Ella is loyal to all things family, including the church that her family has attended for seven generations. When a rich developer wants to buy the church, she fights selling it and those who side with selling for all the wrong reasons. This is a journey of discovery for Ella of Who God is and what He wants for her. There are two men who vie for her attention, both good men. It’s interesting to watch her growth and who she ends up with.

A Tapestry of Secrets is also the grandmother’s story of having a baby out of wedlock back in the late 1950s when it wasn’t a common occurrence.

I really enjoyed the location (Chattanooga area) and the characters. Leave a comment telling me when you think a secret should be told, if ever.

Really depends on the secret. Some should never be revealed; especially those which adversely affect the people involved. For other secrets, it may do everyone good if revealing the secret will set those involved free to love each other again, or bring someone back from despair over a bad situation.

Glad to see you’re still hanging in there. You had us all concerned. 🙂

Depends on the secret. I guess if it is of no benefit to anyone to tell a secret, it should be kept but for medical reasons or even to know a family member, it should be considered whether to reveal a secret. Maybe because I have a fairly large family that is pretty close, that is why family connections are important to me.

Gloria, I think it’s probably a case-by-case decision. I’m so glad you have a large family that gets along! That’s kind of rare. I can see why you’re recommending this book. It sounds compelling. As to secrets, I learned a few years back that teachers, pastors, priests, etc. are compelled to share certain secrets that may mean children and others are being criminally. Those are interesting distinctions and I’m glad they’re on the books.

I will have to check this book out. I have her most recent one and just peeked at it so far.
A secret should stay a secret if it would hurt someone to tell it.
There may be circumstances that may warrant telling, if it was for someone’s own good.

I have not read this book, I will need to check it out. I agree that secrets should be handled on a case by case basis, but if it’s outright gossip that’s wrong.

  6. Edward Arrington

I am reminded of reading on numerous occasions when a character has a secret that someone else knows, but when asked by a third party, the response is “The secret is his (or hers) to tell.” Of course, those stories are fiction and doesn’t really affect anyone in real life. I recognize you aren’t asking about telling someone else’s secret. I suppose some secrets are immaterial to anything or anyone else, so they never need to come out. A lot may depend on whether it’s a secret that involves someone else who could suffer from the revealing of the secret. Unless it pertains to a crime that places one in a potential legal quandary, maybe the secret needs to remain that way. I think all factors must be considered. There is no cookie-cutter answer.

You threw me a curve ball at the end when you said the location was Chattanooga. Earlier the back cover blurb says Ella arrives back in Wise, West Virginia. There is a Wise, Virginia but I can’t find West, West Virginia, so I suppose it is a fictional town. However, either way, West Virginia is about 300 miles from Chattanooga. So I am assuming that the town of Wise was NOT the primary location for the story but maybe one of several locations mentioned.

I need to make sure you proof my books, Edward. You’re right…I have no idea where I got Chattanooga unless that was where the hero was from. You.Are.Good! As for secrets, I have kept several secrets people have told me for years now. Sometimes it isn’t easy, but I’ve managed. Always good to see you here, Edward!

If the secret would hurt someone close to you,it should remain hidden! otherwise it should be told. Can’t wait to read this book!

I agree with the general consensus: it should be case-by-case, but if there is no good reason to tell it, and it will hurt someone needlessly, maybe don’t tell! However, some things are important to tell, for medical or familial reasons. Sounds like a fun book! Thanks for the recommendation!
