Among the Innocent — Reader Friday

Among the Innocent; Psalm 63:1

Among the Innocent by Mary Alford is this week’s Reader Friday. Here’s the first line: He drove by her house again. The second time today. All because of her.

But first this beautiful photo by my friend Cheryl Meints! She took this at Shoshone Falls in Idaho about two weeks ago. I love her photos and wish I were with her on this trip! You can find more of her amazing photos here. I thought the verse went very well with the photo!

Now onto Among the Innocent by Mary Alford.

Here’s the cover and back copy:

Among the InnocentWhen Leah Miller’s entire Amish family was murdered ten years ago, the person believed responsible took his own life. Since then, Leah left the Amish and joined the police force. Now, after another Amish woman is found murdered with the same MO, it becomes clear that the wrong man may have been blamed for her family’s deaths.

As Leah and the new police chief, Dalton Cooper, work long hours struggling to fit the pieces together in order to catch the killer, they can’t help but grow closer. When secrets from both of their pasts begin to surface, an unexpected connection between them is revealed. But this is only the beginning. Could it be that the former police chief framed an innocent man to keep the biggest secret of all buried? And what will it mean for Leah–and Dalton–when the full truth comes to light?

USA Today bestselling author Mary Alford keeps you guessing as two determined souls plumb the dark depths of the past in order to forge a brighter future–together.

My take:

Make sure you have plenty of time before starting Among the Innocent. Otherwise, you’ll be like me, staying up past midnight to turn another page! This is a twisty, high-action suspense story with enough romance to satisfy everyone.

Mary Alford has created a story with a well-thought-out plot and engaging characters that she put in jeopardy, leaving me biting my nails. She knows how to make you care about the characters and then has you on the edge of your seat, wondering if they’ll get out of this alive. I highly recommend it!

Leave a comment with the first line of the book you’re reading and I’ll enter you in a June drawing for a book from my library! That could include Crosshairs, if you haven’t read it!

May’s winner is Tim Johnson!

Shoshone Falls is beautiful! Great verse.:-) Among the Innocent sounds fantastic. I’m reading a writing book. “Thank you for selecting this ultimate guide on how to write a modern cozy murder mystery.” How to Write a Cozy Mystery by Nina Harrington.

I’m becoming a big fan of Cheryl Meints. This photograph is really beautiful; a well chosen composition. The verse you chose certainly fits well.

“Among the Innocent” is a book my wife would have liked to read. She enjoyed Amish characters involved with suspense.

“‘Savannah, call for you on line one. Says he’s a reporter. Never heard of him.'” is the first line of “Flight Risk” by Cara Putman, and part of her Hidden Justice series. It’s a great story how knowing only part of truth can ruin lives. But how do you know if you only have part of the truth? You can count on Cara to write an intriguing story.

Congratulations on your Selah win, Pat! WOW!

Beautiful photo…I love the ruggedness of the rocks. The verse fits perfectly.

Great review on Mary’s book. It’s been ordered for weeks and was supposed to be here May 31. It’s has shipped, but has been stuck somewhere since May 28. Really looking forward to reading Among the Innocent!

I’m reading To Write a Wrong, my second Jen Turano book. “There was not a shadow of a doubt left in Miss Daphne Beekman’s mind that her days as a successful novelist were numbered.”

    Congratulations on winning!

Congratulations on your win. I loved Crosshairs and everything you have written. I haven’t read anything by this author, so this would be a first should I win. It looks and sounds so interesting. Thank you for doing this for your readers.

Congrats, Pat! Awesome! I have seen several people on Goodreads posting great reviews for Among the Innocent. It sounds like one I would enjoy. My first line:
Brianna Hastings slipped into the rear of the classroom, choosing the corner with the poorest lighting.
I’ll Be Seeing You by Robin Lee Hatcher (coming out Tuesday)

Interesting that you shared a picture of the Shoshone Falls today. I’m trying to put together a trip for my wife and I for our 56th wedding anniversary at the end of the month. She said she wanted to visit some waterfalls. She saw a picture of one near Asheville, NC, and we will be in that general area on our trip. I just showed her some of the waterfalls within about an hour of Asheville to see if she wanted to check them out. I like that verse.

The book sounds exciting. I enjoy Amish stories but one with some added elements from the outside world adds to the interest level.

You may have shared this first line recently from Shadow’s in the Mind’s Eye by Janyre Tromp: Darkness had long ago swallowed the Greyhound bus moving down the road so slow that it might as well have been going backward.

I saw the book at the library and the back cover drew me in. I’ve mentioned before about my father’s service in World War II. I can’t help but wonder how similar his mental anguish was to Sam’s. Interesting sidenote – Daddy’s father was called Sam.

I’m so glad you’re getting to take a trip! I love seeing waterfalls. I haven’t read Shadows in the Mind’s Eye but it sounds like something I would enjoy! Isn’t it odd how fiction can mirror real life? Thanks for stopping by.

The picture is beautiful. The verse fits it so well. Congratulations on the award. I really enjoyed reading Crosshairs. I recently read Among the Innocent. It was very good. I just finished reading Vanished Without a Trace by Sarah Hamaker. Henderson Parker stapled the last flyer onto a telephone pole on the outskirts of Twin Oaks.

Beautiful photo. Congratulations on the award. This comes from Unsolved Abduction by Jill Elizabeth Nelson: In the darkness of her bedroom, Carina Collins jerked awake, cold sweat coating her body. A scream welled in her throat but remained trapped within her clenched airway. The familiar nightmare always ended in that noiseless scream, just as the memories of her abduction when she was seven years old remained trapped in a deep, dark compartment of her mind. The psychologists said she might never recall what happened.

I like Mary Alford and have read many of her Love Inspired books. She really knows how to write the kind of suspense that keeps you guessing & on your toes! I have this one already on my want-to-read list for sure.

First line of the book I just started is called “Falling for the Single Dad” by Lisa Carter. It’s a Love Inspired contemporary and it’s the third in a series, which I’m loving getting to know the three Duer sisters. Each one of them is different & spunky as all get out, lol! But what do you expect out of redheads..haha!

“Excuse me? Excuse…meee…?” Startled, Caroline Duer gazed to the left, then right, before coming to rest on the heart-shaped face of a little girl tugging on her sleeve.

I love that picture! Waterfalls are among my favorite kind of scenery & we have lots in Oregon. I would love to visit this one in Idaho, it’s so pretty! There’s just something quite peaceful about them 🙂

Congrats Tim on your June win!! I see happy reading ahead for you 🙂
