Vengeance in the Mist ~ Reader Friday

Vengeance in the Mist; Genesis 1:11

Vengeance in the Mist by Robin Patchen is this week’s Reader Friday. Here’s the first line: Two breaking-and-entering cases, two assaults, one bribery, and a couple of narcotics possession charges. Misty Lake flipped through the last few files.

But first the photo and verse. I took the picture when I put out food for the stray cats in the neighborhood. There the sun was peeking through the vines and branches as it set. Of course, I didn’t have my phone, so I ran in the house and grabbed my phone. Fortunately, the colors were still there.

Now for Vengeance in the Mist by Robin Patchen. Here’s the cover and back copy.

Vengeance in the Mist by Robin Patchen

A routine assault conviction gone wrong. A menacing intruder. And a case that’s more twisted—and dangerous—than anyone suspected.

Assistant District Attorney Misty Lake wants nothing more than to ensure Boston lawbreakers face justice, but how can she while dealing with an increasing workload and pressure to offer plea deals? When a criminal she prosecuted is released on a technicality, she doesn’t have time to worry about the threats he once breathed against her.

Tate Steele dreams of rising in the ranks at the DA’s office, but idealistic prosecutor Misty is in his way. When the district attorney asks him to assist her with a few cases, he’s eager to close them quickly to prove his merit. But he and Misty discover her apartment has been broken into, and this is no run-of-the-mill burglar. The intruder escapes and leaves no trace.

Either the vengeful convict Misty put away has upped his skills, or there’s more at play than a defendant seeking revenge.

Every clue opens up a deeper layer of lies and corruption. Though Tate has always been her rival—more concerned with ambition than justice—seeing his protective side makes Misty’s heart vulnerable to his charm…something she can’t risk. Someone is bent on making sure the truth never comes to light—no matter what the cost.

Don’t miss the final twisted mystery in the addictive Coventry Saga.

My take:

I really enjoyed Vengeance in the Mist by Robin Patchen–so much so, I stayed up until 3:30 a.m. to finish it. Kept mumbling to myself, just one more chapter…

Misty Lake was a complex character, and I totally understood where she was coming from. She felt the responsibility of the whole world on her shoulders…or at least her part of the world. She feared turning a criminal loose and the criminal committing more and worse crimes. Somewhere along the way, she’d lost mercy.

Tate Steele was the opposite of Misty. He judged each case on its own merit and had no problem with settling out of court. He was a favorite with his boss…but as he worked with Misty, he understood that sometimes a prosecutor had to take a stand. Especially after Misty’s stand made her a killer’s target.

I love the way Robin Patchen brought change to both characters. A very edge-of-your-seat book with a satisfying ending! You can purchase Vengeance in the Mist here or read for free on Kindle Unlimited.

Love the picture. The verse was a perfect choice. Thank you for feeding the stray cats. It is said that angels walk among us, and YOU Patricia are one. Bless you!

DJ, I hate to see food go to waste and if we’re not going to eat it, I want to give it to someone (or something) that will. 🙂 And thanks to the stray cats, there are no mole in my yard any longer!

That was definitely a big smile photo. Lovely. I also know the stray cats are full and happy after leaving your yard. 🙂

Vengeance in the Mist sounds like another great read. I can’t believe how many books I’ve read thanks to your reviews. I need another bookshelf!

“The possibility of taking them both out crossed Lalo’s mind, but his employer had only paid for one hit and disposing of two bodies would be problematic,” is the first line of the third paragraph in a Deadly Wilderness, by Kelly Irvin.

Happy Memorial Day Blog family, and a big thank you to all our veterans!

Tim, Kelly actually wrote this, her first book, in 2010. It was re-released last week, now as a paperback and e-book. Really good so far.

Wow, Pat. That was a fiery sunset! “And God said…” The greatest power of all is in His words. And, the greatest comfort, too.

Robin Patchen’s books do have a way of grabbing you until you get to the end. This was a super finale to her long running Coventry series.

The prologue to ‘Portrait of Vengeance” by Carrie Parks has these words: “Blood splattered the walls and floor. An overturned coffee table lay on a broken vase. Holly’s voice screeched in my brain. ‘Run, Gwen! If ever you find us dead, it means he found us!'” This explains why the adult Gwen Marcey, forensic artist, begs to be assigned to a fresh case with similar circumstances in the same area where she used to live. I love Carrie’s books for the somewhat quirky, yet realistic, protagonists she invents.

I was so surprised at the sunset, Tim. Of all times not to have my phone with me! I ran back in the house and grabbed it and was agains surprised that the shot was still there!

And now I have to make sure I have Carrie’s book!

Pat, those neighborhood strays can definitely be a blessing. When my wife and I lived in El Cajon (San Diego suburb), there was a cat that began joining us on our early morning walks. Next thing you know, Karen was putting out food for him. A couple of years later, he moved to Rochester, MN with us! Later, Surfer Dude (his nickname) moved with us again to Tucson. All of which reminds me of Garrison Keillor’s “In And Out Cat Song”. You can find it on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NZh9ennozk

Sorry I’m so late checking in. It’s been a busy day. Our refrigerator died last Wednesday night. After several days of searching, we finally settled on the one we wanted. It was supposed to be delivered between 10 and 2 today, but before I had even started to get dressed, they called to say they would arrive in 15-20 minutes. My morning routine got blown and I was trying to get back in step all day long. And now, it’s already Saturday morning here. I’m trying to wrap things up for the night.

Pat, you did a wonderful job on that picture. I actually thought it was a sunrise. My thoughts immediately went to the empty tomb glowing through the trees. The verse suits the picture so well.

I agree with you about Robin Patchen’s books. I have enjoyed all of her books. Later today, maybe in the late afternoon, I hope to start reading Lynn Blackburn’s Under Fire. I think you featured it a while back. Or someone else in this group has. I want to share the first line of H.L. Wegley’s book, The Darkness Within. I just received it today and will start reading it as soon as I read Lynn’s book. That one is due to the library today, and I’ve reached my limit on renewals. The first line of The Darkness Within: The international battle against the Marburg Pandemic had held its own for the past six weeks using Dr. Meiling Chen-Adams’s therapeutics as the primary defense weapons.

I hate it when my morning gets interrupted, Edward. You’re playing catchup the rest of the day! I could not believe I was seeing the sun through a hole in my hedge. You never know when God it going to give you a great photo op!

I love Harry Wegley’s books! He’s a great writer. Hope you have a peaceful Memorial Day!
