Sweet Dare ~ Reader Friday

Sweet Dare ~ Sweet County Secrets Series Book Three by Sally Jo Pitts is this week’s Reader Friday. Here the opening: Clouds eased the Florida heat but barely calmed Nancy Cargill’s nerves. Why had she agreed to address the county commission? Parked outside the Sweet County Courthouse, she sent up a prayer to settle her quaky stomach.

But first the amazing photo and verse. Sunsets are some of my favorite photos, and this one is amazing! Priscilla Bettis emailed me a Texas sunset she took earlier this week, and I asked if I could use it for the Friday blog. She graciously agreed! Thank you, Priscilla, for sharing your talent with us. The verse in Ecclesiastes immediately came to mind.

Now for Sweet Dare ~ Sweet County Secrets Series Book Three by Sally Jo Pitts. Here’s the cover and back copy:

Sweet Dare by Sally Jo PittsAn Indian legend, a dare, and a killer … collide in Sweet County.
Beneath a choking blanket of kudzu, Sweet Preserve biologist Nancy Cargill uncovers an ancient Indian burial mound. Instead of praise, she’s accused of desecrating sacred land and disturbing the grave of Princess Sweet Rose.

Cub Scout Zeke Robins and his friends are captivated by the legend of White Feather and his firefly warriors who search every new moon for Sweet Rose’s resting place. On a dare, Zeke sneaks out to help the ghostly suitor but is confronted by a spear-wielding wild man.

Deputy Tommy Singletree—volunteer Scout leader and temporary investigator—catches his first major case when a gruesome double homicide is discovered on the mound. As fear and talk of a curse spread through the county, Tommy must separate folklore from truth, protect Nancy and the boys … and risk his heart before his first case becomes his last.

My Take:

I loved this story that weaves a mystery around Indian folklore, a great hero and heroine, and cute cub scouts who are too brave for their own good. This is a great wrap-up of the Sweet County Secrets Series. It’s also a stand-alone, meaning you don’t have to read the others to enjoy this one.

The mystery quickly drew me in as I tried to figure out who the bad guys were, but Sally Jo Pitts’ twisty plot kept me guessing to the end. Zeke will capture your heart as soon as you meet him, and you’ll be rooting for a good outcome for him. This heart-tugging mystery will keep you turning the pages to the end!

While I received a copy of the story from the author, I also purchased it for my sister because I know she enjoys a good mystery!

You can find Sweet Dare in KU or preorder it here. It really helps an author if you preorder or pre-select it for KU!

Okay Readers, what are you reading this week? Leave the title or first line in the comments, and I’ll enter you in a July drawing for something…

Now for the Friday song. I’ve always loved this song, and I think Carrie Underwood does a great job!

Hey, I recognize that picture, LOL! I am still reading Tinkers by Paul Harding. I’m glad I’m reading it because it’s beautiful writing, but it’s very slow going! Each passage is like its own prose poem.

Powerful Scripture and a spectacular sunset photo! “Sweet Dare” sounds really interesting.

Today I will start reading “Trapped” by Jerusha Agen. The first line is “Could she fight to the death?” How’s that for a grabber?

Gorgeous Photo and another excellent verse & song! I am reading “The Reluctant Healer of Halifax” by Terrie Todd, which is historical fiction. The book you shared: “Sweet Dare ~ Sweet County Secrets Series Book Three” sounds good! Thank you!

Oh my! That was a Texas sunset for sure, Priscilla! Beautiful! I hope you don’t mind, but my brain started seeing things in the clouds: 4 cat’s, cowboy on a horse, dinosaur, drone, a far away city etc. Thanks for posting Priscilla’s photo, Pat! I know you loved this one, too! sunsets! Ahhhh

Sweet Dare sounds like a fun read. I receive Sally Jo’s newsletter, but just realized I haven’t read any of her books. Need to change that, don’t I?

I’m reading Deadly Disclosures by Julie Cave, a new-to-me author. I like the sentence on the back of the book that reads, “How far will some go to silence an influential Christian voice?” It’s been quite suspenseful so far!

Deadly Disclosures sounds intriguing, Barbara! And I’ll have to go back and see if I can find any of your animals and things in the photo. lol I think you will enjoy Sally Jo’s books, too.

Lovely sunset, Priscilla. I do enjoy sunsets. We walk outside just to see them.

Me, too, Gloria–about walking out to see them…I like both sunset and sunrises–I’ll even get up early to see a sunrise sometimes. 😉 And An Artless Demise sounds very interesting.

Beautiful picture by Priscilla paired with a wonderful Scripture verse by you! And the song is sung beautifully by Carrie Underwood. I dislike most renditions of How Great Thou Art because too many singers want to use it to showcase their musical “abilities” rather than giving praise to God. I question if even God Himself gets any pleasure from the way some people perform the song because that’s all it is for them – just a performance. I didn’t get that impression from this one.

I need to check out books by Sally Jo Pitts. This one sounds interesting.

I plan to start a first read on Shadowing You by Robin Patchen today. This is the tenth and final book in her Wright Heroes of Maine series. It promises to be a real gripping story. Since it’s already listed on Amazon, although it doesn’t release until September, I think it should be okay to share the first line.

Mei Lin inhaled the scents of diesel and old upholstery as she would the finest incense, watching the skyscrapers shrink in the rear window—and willing the bus to move faster.

Thank you, Edward! I’m glad you enjoyed Priscilla’s photo and my verse. 🙂 And I agree about some singers only wanting to showcase their talent. I felt Carrie Underwood was truly singing to God. I’ll have to get Robin Patchen’s book–I’ve read most of the other Wright Heroes of Maine books. They are so good!

Beautiful photo Priscilla! Thanks to you and Pat for sharing! I have seen beautiful sunrises and sunsets, and love them both! As an early morning person I probably prefer a gorgeous sunrise; they make me realize God has given me another day. Carrie Underwood sings How Great Thou Art so beautifully.
I want to read Sweet Dare. I read the first book in this series but don’t know how I missed #2.

I’m just beginning A Deadly Wilderness by Kelly Irvin, which you reviewed a few weeks back.
    Have a blessed weekend!

This comes from Attempted Mountain Murder by Jaime Jo Wright: Her apartment was ransacked. Couch pillows had been sliced open, their stuffing shed on the floor. It wasn’t just that her place had been tossed — it was the fact that she had been found.

D-Valued by Marji Laine is what I am currently reading.

I love Carrie Underwood’s religious songs. This song always makes me cry. It was my mom’s favorite hymn.

Thanks so much for sharing “your take” on Sweet Dare. I appreciate so much your support. I am currently listening to an audio library book when I’m in the car– The Seven Rings by Nora Roberts. It’s a bit strange with an evil spirit in an old manor, but interesting.
