Reader Friday – The Great Divorce

Can you believe I hadn’t read The Great Divorce by C. S. Lewis until recently? It was given to me by my good friend and fellow writer, Delores Topliff, for my birthday back in January. Since I was deep into getting Justice Delivered finished (and by this time next week it will sit on my editor’s desk!), I only had time to read in bits and snatches. One of the things I learned was Lewis’ full name. Clive Staples Lewis. Here’s the back cover copy:

C.S. Lewis’ The Great Divorce is a classic Christian allegorical tale about a bus ride from hell to heaven. An extraordinary meditation upon good and evil, grace and judgment, Lewis’s revolutionary idea in the The Great Divorce is that the gates of Hell are locked from the inside. Using his extraordinary descriptive powers, Lewis’ The Great Divorce will change the way we think about good and evil.

This is a thought-provoking book and even though written in 1947, has relevance for today. Lewis paints such a clear picture of the consequences of the choices we make. One of my favorite scenes is the picture of a small man handcuffed to a large one. The small one is being addressed but the large man always speaks instead of him, and with each choice that is made the small man gets smaller and smaller until there is only the large man. I highly recommend this book!

My question for the drawing is, have you read any of C. S. Lewis’ books? I have The Chronicles of Narnia on my Kindle, but I haven’t read it. I have read The Screwtape Letters and loved it.

Leave a comment to be entered in a drawing for a $10 Amazon gift card. I’ll draw next Thursday night and announce the winner Friday.

SO GLAD you’re liking The Great Divorce. I find it sticks with you far better than any good meal. I’ve re-seen and heard relevant images and nuggets at very appropriate times through the years. I believe I’ve read all of his books and, since I was an English major, even his excellent English Lit. 16th Century Lit. several times, plus books about his home, setting, world–can you tell he’s definitely one of my faves? Wow, may our writing also stick with people long after they finish the last page and utter satisfying sighs.

I actually read the entire series of The Chronicles of Narnia in three days while working full-time with four children under the age of 10. My husband wasn’t pleased (ha ha) but gave me some slack since it was CS Lewis.

I tried to read Mere Christianity years ago but had trouble following and getting into it. My kids loved The Chronicles of Narnia and I enjoyed the movies. By the way, Happy Belated Birthday!

I have not read the book myself. I have heard it referenced in church and Bible study.
I’ve read other C.S. Lewis books and liked them. Of course, Narnia is a family favorite.

Yes, I have read many of his books many years ago, probably the 70’s and 80’s. Narnia, the space trilogy and mere Christianity, the Srewtape Letters, etc.

    Hello there,

Speaking of C S Lewis, I haven’t ever read his brilliant works. What a shame !! 🙁 Honestly, I do have this one book on my shelves, it’s C S Lewis’s work, about everything related to Narnia, Yes, I have read it and loved it so much. Does it count?? hehehe

I’m here a big fan of Narnia the movies, I have watched all of them, even I save it every copies of the film on my laptop.

I tried to read The Screwtape Letters years ago but couldn’t get into it for some reason. I have watched The Chronicles of Narnia (the first one) and enjoyed it, and hope to watch the others some day. I’ve seen many of C.S. Lewis’s quotes around the internet, he seems like a very wise man 🙂 Maybe I’ll give another one of his books a try one day!
