Reader Friday ~ In Too Deep

Patricia Bradley Reader Friday 32 Comments

Hi everyone! This blog comes to you from Montgomery State Park. Last night three of us decided to take a little walk…unfortunately, we got a little lost and ended up about four miles from the lodge. But we did see several deer on our journey! And I got a picture of one!

Then this morning I had breakfast on the balcony outside my room. It was the first morning it was warm enough!

Now onto my Reader Friday post. Last week I read In Too Deep by Lynn H. Blackburn. Well, I’m here to tell you, don’t start it unless you have time to read. I was up until one the first night and then one-thirty the next night! It is a gripping story and is one I should have read last year!

Here’s the back cover copy, then my review:

When the dive team is called in to recover a body from a submerged car, they aren’t prepared to find an encrypted laptop–or an unsettling connection between investigator Adam Campbell and the dead accountant.

Adam turns to his friend Dr. Sabrina Fleming–a professor at the local university with unparalleled computer security and forensics skills–to recover the files from the laptop. But the deeper they dig, the deadlier the investigation becomes. When evidence uncovers a human trafficking ring and implicates members of Adam’s own family, he and Sabrina will have to risk everything to solve the case.

The truth could set hundreds free–but someone is willing to do whatever it takes to silence anyone who threatens to reveal their secrets.

Award-winning author Lynn H. Blackburn invites readers back to Carrington, North Carolina, where everything is not as it seems and sinister elements lurk behind the idyllic façade.

Oh, my. This is the second book in the Dive Team Investigations and Lynn has done a masterful job on this suspenseful story. Right off the bat, I liked Adam. I mean, what’s not to like? He’s rich, handsome and caught between a rock and a hard place with his family and job as a detective. And Sabrina is so enduring. She reminded me of  Dr. Temperance Brennan on Bones. Because of her family background, she had insulated herself from people, not letting them get close and had never developed a sense of how to do relationships. It was fun watching her come to the realization that Adam might like her.

The story will keep you on the edge of your seat as they uncover the reason the dead woman had written Adam’s name on her stomach. And Blackburn will keep you guessing as you try to unravel the reason someone is out to kill Sabrina. This is a book I really enjoyed.

The characters in this book belong to a dive team. Do you like unusual occupations for characters? As for me, I would love to be on a dive team!! Leave a comment and I’ll enter you in a drawing for a book from my library, including In Too Deep!

I do like to read about unusual occupations and locations so that I am able to expand my knowledge. My son and husband have both done some diving but I don’t think that I am diving material. This is a great series. I have read both books and look forward to the new one coming out. Your location looks lovely and peaceful. Enjoy!

Pat, I agree completely with your assessment of “In too Deep”. Now you need to pick up her “Beneath the Surface”; another excellent read. And while you’re at it, mark you calendar for Sept. 3 for “One Final Breath” (book 3 of Dive Team Investigations). Ms Blackburn has one fantastic series going for her. I’ve also made a note to pick up her “Covert Justice” and “Hidden Legacy” to “back fill” my collection of her work.

I have Beneath the Surface, Tim. 🙂 And I think I reviewed it here when it first came out. I’ve had In Too Deep for almost a year now…that’s how far behind I am on my reading!

I’m late getting to your post today. As I read the back cover copy and your comments, I thought it sounded familiar. I checked back and found I read it in December. I really enjoyed the book. One thing that made it enjoyable was the unusual jobs of the characters. Variety kicks things up a notch.

That should work. After all, I’m sure a number of amateur sleuths are crack-pots. A potter who is an amateur sleuth would probably figure out what to do with those. 🙂

Hi, Wow, the book sounds intriguing! I love murder mysteries, I love to watch forensic files and all that has to do with it. 🙂 And yes I love to read abut unusual jobs, I wouldn’t mind reading a book about transporters, the ones who take bodies in a vehicle to where they need to take them! I Love the pictures that you took of the deer and from your balcony, it looks very peaceful and picturesque! Have a Great weekend! The cover of your book is awesome and really makes me want to read your book. God Bless you.

The whole Dive Team Investigations series is on my want-to-read list! I’ve heard many great things about them 🙂

I do like unusual occupations in books. Those that go outside the “norm” keep my interest for sure. I love authors who explore different topics.

Sounds like you had a good time, Patricia. Except for the unplanned four mile hike that is, lol! Seeing deer and other wildlife would be the highlight for me 🙂

Thanks for the book spotlight and review! I hope to read this for myself soon.

I wanted to be a scuba diver when I grew up–my 4th grade student teacher told me that I couldn’t be one, and to rewrite my “career” paper–I did become a certified diver when I was 20—but never wanted to participate in a search/recovery team! This book has already drawn me in–I definitely want to read it!

I’ve wanted to dive ever since that TV series with Lloyd Bridges in it, MS Barb. 🙂 My daughter is a certified diver and maybe one day if I move to Florida, I’ll get certified, too.
