Reader Friday – Engaged in Trouble

One day I realized I had never read a Jenny B. Jones book. I’d meant to, but if you ever took a look at my Kindle titles or my print TBR table you would understand. Anyhoo, this past week I remedied the oversight with not one book but two! And I actually started with the first book of a new series. The Enchanted Events Mystery Books! Here’s the back cover copy for book 1:

When a washed-up pop star inherits a wedding planning business, it’s all bouquets and bliss until a bride turns up dead.

Paisley Sutton shot to stardom as a teenage rock sensation, but ten years later that star has fizzled out, just like her bank account. When she unexpectedly inherits her aunt’s wedding planning business, Paisley leaves the glamour of Los Angeles for a charming small town in Arkansas. Thinking she’ll arrive in Sugar Creek and liquidate the moldy property, Paisley’s shocked to find Enchanted Events has experienced a major makeover and is now the place for brides. She’s got two months to keep Enchanted Events afloat if she wants to sell and rekindle her music career with the profits.

Paisley’s tossed into a world of vows and venues, but her most difficult challenge comes in the form of one demanding bride. When this Bridezilla’s found facedown in her cake, all fingers point to Paisley as the prime murder suspect. And she does not look good in prison orange.

This former pop princess will need the help of her gun-toting, ex-CIA grandmother and her handsome neighbor, Beau Hudson, to unravel the mystery and clear her good name. As she and her unruly posse dig into Bridezilla’s life, she discovers the woman had a long list of enemies. The closer Paisley gets to the truth, the more her own life is in danger.

Love is in the air this wedding season, but before Paisley can help the ladies of Sugar Creek say, “I do,” she’s got to unveil a killer. Or find herself the next target.

Engaged in Trouble is the first book in the long-awaited Enchanted Events cozy mystery series by award-winning author Jenny B. Jones. If you like laugh-out-loud adventures, small-town romance, unforgettable, sassy characters, and a mystery to keep you guessing, then you’ll love this new page-turning series.

My take:

This was a fun read from the start. I loved her grandmother Sylvia and her friend Fran. They were hilarious. Down on her luck pop star Paisley Sutton returned to Sugar Creek to claim an inheritance that she intended to sell. ASAP. Unfortunately one of the terms of the inheritance was she had to successfully run the business for thirty days. No problem…until the wedding planner’s biggest client ends up murdered and Paisley is the chief suspect.

Her matchmaking grandmother puts the man she intends for Paisley to fall in love with in the other half of Paisley’s duplex. However, things don’t always work out the way grandmothers want, which makes for an interesting situation. There are lots of twists and turns in the mystery as well as the romance. There is a little more sexual tension and innuendo in this series than I normally read. Most of the innuendo is humorously made by Sylvia and Fran.

I liked this story well enough that I bought the second book in the series, Royally in Trouble, straight from the back pages of Engaged in Trouble. 🙂

Have you ever read any of Jenny B. Jones’s books? Leave a comment and I’ll enter you in a drawing for a book from my library.

Sounded interesting until you got to “a little more sexual tension and innuendo” part. I try to steer away from that. I don’t need anything trying to plant thoughts in my mind that don’t belong there. Easier to avoid than to get rid of.

I read Lisa’s Christmas Witness Pursuit two weeks ago and Deadly Intentions in July. I am on her influencer team. I look forward to her new books.

I understand, Cindy. Honestly, I think the book would have been better without the innuendo. The romance was fine–nothing that’s not in most romantic suspense books. Next week’s book by Lisa Harris may be more to your liking! Thanks for stopping by.

I have not read a Jenny B. Jones book…number one I’ve never heard of her & number two it’s not my normal type of story to read. But after your take on this, I think I’ll have to at least read this one to see what I think 😉 Espeically since it involves an ex-CIA grandmother, gotta check that out.
