Reader Friday – Blind Betrayal

It has been a beautiful week here in North Mississippi. I drove down to Oxford (William Faulkner’s hometown) on Wednesday with my cousin…may do a book signing there. Anyway, on to the book I read this week, Blind Betrayal.

Here’s the back cover copy:

Deputy U.S. Marshal Casey Sloane has worked at the St. Louis Marshals office for two years and is given a routine assignment to help transport a reporter to D.C. to testify before a grand jury. Valerie, the reporter, was writing a story about an up-and-coming environmentalist who suddenly disappeared and, she later discovered, whose backers purportedly have ties to a terrorist.

When the seemingly ordinary assignment suddenly takes a shocking turn, Casey is forced to put aside her own feelings about the unexpected reappearance of a man from her past as she and two other Marshals take Valerie on the run. And as it becomes dangerously clear Valerie’s testimony has even bigger implications than they knew, they’ll do whatever it takes to make it out alive.

Now for my thoughts. I got a little put out with Nancy Mehl about one o’clock Monday night Tuesday morning. I.Needed.Sleep! But I had to find out how the book ended, so I kept reading until almost two.

Mehl has crafted believable characters in this page-turner. I really liked Casey Sloane and E. J. Queen. And Valerie and Doug. And their supervisor.  But I was really rooting for Casey and E. J. Not only to stay alive but to fall in love. The story had plenty of twists and turns and just when you thought everyone was safe…BAM! Something else happened.

If you like romantic suspense, then I think you’ll really like this book by Nancy Mehl. But unless you want to lose sleep, start on it early enough to finish before bedtime. 🙂

When I was in the 10th grade, I read Exodus by Leon Uris and I.Could.Not.Put.the.Book.Down! My English teacher didn’t believe I had read it until I told her some of the details. I still remember that book, Phyllis. Oh, and you are the winner of April’s book. I’ll send you a selection you can choose from 🙂

Mary, if I’m not on deadline, I can stay up until one and sleep until seven and still get six hours sleep, which is all I usually get anyway. But if I’m trying to beat a deadline, I have to get up at 5:30 or 6…and that makes for a grouchy me when I read late. lol

I have stayed up until midnight reading a book because it was so suspenseful! I finished Blind Betrayal by 10:00, but only because I started it much earlier in the evening. 🙂

I don’t usually stay up straight through reading a book, but when I wake up during the night, I grab a book for another few pages, and sometimes recently that has led to reading until dawn and then there’s that, “Oh, no, I’m not quite ready for the day” feeling, but, “It sure was a good book!

Oh gosh. Books are my downfall when it comes to bedtime!! I have gotten better about it as I get older, but there are still nights…. As a teen, there were times I got no sleep at all in order to finish a book before having to get ready for school/work.

Diane, we are sisters in crime! I don’t know how many first period classes I wanted to sleep through. lol. I remember reading Hawaii by James Michener in the 11th grade.

I have stayed up until 4 am to finish a book. I had a hard time getting myself and my kids up the next day, but I had to finish the book!

I know exactly what you mean, Beth. Every time I do it, I promise I won’t do it again, then I get hooked and can’t put the book down. Blind Betrayal was like that. Thanks for stopping by!

I have a crazy schedule because I work nights Sunday-Thursday. So during the week I can stay up to 3pm which equals an hour or two of sleep and on weekends 4:30am which equals 3-4 hours of sleep. I try not to do this, especially during the week but, it happens. 🙂

I have stayed up until 2 am to finish a book. I think that is my time limit! I am glad I am more of a night owl instead of an early bird.

Maryann, I am an early bird and used to get up at 4:30, but I got over that. lol However, when I was a kid, I was always the first one up. We lived near a scope of woods, and I would sneak out of the house and stay there until my mom would call me in.

I have been known to stay up most of the night to finish a book. Regrets when that alarm clock goes off in the morning!

I have stayed up into the wee hours many, many times! I lie to myself when I say, “Just one more chapter.” LOL! I routinely will read until 12-1 am but if my hubs is gone, it can be later than that!

When I can’t sleep I will stay up all night to read. I always read before I go to sleep and if I get caught up in a book I just keep reading.

Oh, I am so glad that I am not the only one to read late before sleep. I recently stayed up until 3 to finish a book but usually no later than 12 or 1, which is still too late.

When I was a kid, I would wait until my parents went to sleep and then get up and read. They caught on so I had to hide a flashlight so I could read under the covers. I don’t have to hide it any longer, but I often stay up late reading. I think 4 a.m. is the latest. Since I am retired, I can stay up late and get up late. My kind of day!

Patricia, thanks for the review. I won this book in a giveaway in February and received it in the mail Thursday. I had so much else going on that I just got around to my email for Thursday and Friday a short while ago. I have stayed up until three or four in the morning to finish a book, but I am less inclined to do that now than in the past.

I just recently won a copy of Blind Betrayal from Nancy herself. It will now complete my Defenders of Justice collection! Since I’m an early bird to bed (by 9:30pm), the latest I can feasibly stay up to read a book is about midnight. After that, I just get way too tired and my eyes no longer cooperate with me…lol!

Thanks for your take on Nancy’s newest book, I love reading your thoughts!
