Jerusha Agen’s Rising Danger–What I’m Reading

Patricia Bradley Reader Friday 78 Comments

Jerusha Agen’s Rising Danger kept me up a couple of nights this week until past midnight! This fast-paced story will keep you turning the pages until The End!

But first the photo and scripture. The past few months this verse has kept me going. It is such a comfort to know we belong to Him, that He has called us by name. That just does something to me. And all of your prayers have been so uplifting. Thank you!

Now onto Jerusha Agen’s Rising Danger!

Here are the opening two lines: “Chaos assaulted her as soon as she opened the door. For a moment, just one second, Bristol Bachmann wanted to retreat into the Jeep and shut out the sounds of panic and terror that threatened to conjure the same emotions in her.”

It’s up to a K-9 handler and her canine partner to stop a bomber before it’s too late.

Someone’s planting explosives on dams in the Twin Cities, and Bristol Bachmann and her bomb-sniffing dog must move quicJerusha Agen's Rising Danger; Is.43:1kly to find them before everything ends up underwater. That means relying on the dams’ supervisor—an ex-boyfriend Bristol never thought she’d see again. Hopefully Remington Jones has grown up from the rakish charmer she knew in her academy days. Because lives now depend entirely on them…

It’s an environmental terrorist who wants the dams gone, and his bid to set the waters free has lethal consequences. When he sees Bristol and her K-9 working to stop him, he sets his sights on them. Can they evade him in a lethal game of cat and mouse and protect the cities from devastating destruction before the clock runs out?

A thrilling must-read novel from Love Inspired: Stories to Uplift and Inspire.

My take on Jerusha Agen’s Rising Danger:

I loved this gripping story. Bristol and her bomb-sniffing dog, Toby, are on the hunt for the man responsible for the murder of eleven people at one of the many dams in and around Minneapolis. She is determined to stop him before others are killed. Her one fear is of rushing water. Water like Hurricane Katrina that killed her father and sister.

Remington (don’t you love that name) Jones is the man in charge of security for the dams being targeted. He’s tried to get the dam owners to upgrade their security to no avail, but now everyone is looking to him for answers as to how someone could plant a bomb at the site. It doesn’t help that in his younger days, he was known to be a good-time-Charlie. Bristol is especially wary of him and his supposed change to being responsible.

There’s plenty of romantic tension in the story as well as suspense. This is a book that will hold you captive to the very end! I reviewed this book in view of making an endorsement and was thrilled to do so!

That Scripture speaks to me, too. I think it’s a favorite because it is so personal.

“Rising Danger” checks off all my boxes for a book I’d want to read. I love K-9 stories, and I lived about 80 miles south of the Twin Cities area for almost 10 years, so I’m familiar with that area. Sounds like a great thriller.

“They wanted her to take on another undercover gig? No way. Not happening.” from “Labyrinth of Lies” by Irene Hannon. Terrific book. Ms Hannon’s books were the first Christian suspense books I read, and got me hooked on this genre.

I have Irene Hannon’s Labyrinth of Lies on my nightstand, Tim. Can’t wait to get to it. I think you would enjoy it! Kristin Heitzman was the author who made me want to write Christian Fiction. And Dee Henderson. And…

Tim, I’m glad you shared that first line. I had missed that Irene Hannon’s book is out. I’ll be looking for it.

Jerusha, my late wife was from Austin, MN, and we lived in Rochester, MN for a bit over 9 years. It finally got too cold for us, something to do with living in warmer climates before, I think. I got a transfer with IBM to Tucson, where I am to this day.

Thanks for writing this book. I love good writing, and enjoy settings that I have some familiarity with.

“Running has become a lifestyle for me. Some days I almost forget why I started. Almost.” From Stepping From Shadows by Cara Putman. This book is included as a part of the newly released collection, Dangerous Pursuits. I am going to have to add Jerusha Agen’s Rising Danger to my TBR list, which just keeps growing.

Good morning! Definitely one of my favorite verses! I have it marked in all my Bibles. I like to visualize walking hand in hand with Jesus.

Rising Danger sounds like a real page turner. I love K-9 anything and am thrilled you will write about it in your next series! Oh yes!

I so enjoy having a TBR pile. My husband made a special bookcase for me to hold ALLLLLL of them. It’s like going to a fine restaurant and taking your time to select from the menu.
“It was quickly becoming evident that she, Miss Gabriella Goodhue, might very well be arrested in the not-too-distant future, and all because she’d convinced herself that sneaking into a high society costume ball would be a relatively easy feat, given her past life as a street thief. “ This is a new author for me, Jen Turano in To Steal a Heart.

I love your description of choosing from your shelved TBR pile, Barbara! That is SO fun–the moment of getting to choose one’s next good read. I just got my first Jen Turano novel, too, and am eager to read it. I’ve heard great things!

Good review, Rising Danger sounds exciting. I bet Hidden Danger is just as good. Yes, I love reading about K-9s. The first line in the high fantasy book I’m reading (Dead of Winter: Journey 10 by Teagan Geneviene) is: The first of all nightwalkers cast his sidelong glance at the frail-seeming little man who approached.

Gorgeous picture. I can understand why the Scripture has kept you going. The last phrase is especially meaningful: “You are Mine!”

I started reading Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy several weeks ago. It is a slow read. This is the first line of chapter 1: Peace had at last returned to Europe.

Regarding your question, I very much enjoy books about K-9 dogs. I’m not a pet lover due to serious allergies from early childhood. I try to steer clear because petting an animal and getting my hands anywhere near my nose can set off an allergy attack. But I have always enjoyed reading stories that included animals. I particularly enjoy those with a dog that serve a greater purpose than just being an animal that has to be taken care of.

    1. Jerusha Agen

That’s too bad about your severe animal allergies, Edward. But it’s wonderful you still enjoy reading about animals! Yes, it’s amazing how God uses many animals, especially dogs, to help humans in incredible ways.

Edward, I hate that you’ve been allergic to pets all of your life! So glad you enjoy reading about K9 dogs, though. I think I tried to read the Bonhoeffer book once, but it was slow and I stopped, but I did read another, shorter one that was very good! He was an amazing man.

    3. Tim Johnson

Edward, I read that biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer by Eric Metaxas many years ago. Great book, but it was a long read. There is also a movie of Bonhoeffer that was really good. It is called “Bonhoeffer: Agent of Grace”.

Sorry about your pet allergies. That’s a real bummer.

I’ve started reading an early copy of “As Dawn Breaks” by Kate Breslin and here’s the first few lines:

    Ayslebury Prison
    Buckinghamshire, England
    Early March 1918
Only by searching the bowels of hell would he find the devil. “The prisoner’s cell is this was, Captain. If you’ll follow me.” Marcus Weatherford pulled his gaze from the shadowy confines beyond the barred gate to the glance at the uniformed warden. Then with a backward nod to his companion, the two men followed the warder into the gloom.

I haven’t read K-9 suspense (yet), but I do love it when animals are given their own character and a place in the plot. 🙂

    First lines:
Vanessa Baker planted her hands on her hips. “I am not riding on that… that boat—”
    “Float.”
The single word from Caleb Peterson’s mouth made her want to scream.

Wow, I’m late to the party! I love K-9 stories! I saw a cop car over here that said “dog unit”, and I was like, why couldn’t they at least call it “dog squad” or something more exciting?! I’ve always wanted a dog, but it just doesn’t work for us right now. We’d have to move first. So reading books about trained dogs is the next best thing!

In May, my husband and I flew commercial to Seattle to pick up the plane we’d purchased. Since he had to accrue a set number of hours in the plane before we could fly it home to Arkansas, I employed my free time listening to the audio version of Rising Danger. As I stated in my review, Jerusha has earned a spot on my shelves along with Dani Pettrey and Lisa Harris—other romantic suspense writers I enjoy reading. “While some books marketed as Christian fiction can stand without any direct mention of faith in God, the gospel message was integral to this story.” I’m ready for more and I’m also curious to know how her FBO research plays into this new story.

    Questions for the Author:
Rising Danger was published with Harlequin/Love Inspired. Why go indie and how difficult was it to do so?

BTW, I love the consistency between the two covers.

I think I know the answer to your question, Amanda, but I’m going to let Jerusha answer for herself. 😉 I love Jerusha’s books, too and I’m waiting for the second one featuring Cora! Thanks so much for stopping by!

    2. Jerusha Agen

Hey, Amanda! Guess what? You made the acknowledgements in Hidden Danger thanks to your help with my FBO research! 😉 A lot of factors played into going indie with this book, most of which are too complex to go into here. But it was just the right move at the right time. (I’ll PM you with more details.) How difficult was it to go indie? There’s been LOT to learn, so that’s kept me hopping, but I’m loving indie publishing! Thanks for the compliment about the covers!
