Following the Trail–Reader Friday

Patricia Bradley Reader Friday 36 Comments

Following the Trail by Lynette Eason is the Reader Friday post. I read this a month or so ago–haven’t had time to read lately — and really enjoyed it–It was another book that kept me up past my bedtime.

But first, the photo and verse. I came across this verse today in my daily Bible readings and remembered that I’d made a meme and decided to find it. Voilá  I also love the verse that follows 26: “The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.”

Now for Following the Trail by Lynette Eason.

Tracking leads in her sister’s disappearance could make a K-9 handler the next victim.

Lacey Jefferson’s search for her missing sister quickly turns into a murder investigation—thrusting Lacey and her search-and-rescue K-9, Scarlett, into a killer’s sights. Now teaming up with her ex-boyfriend, Sheriff Creed Payne, is the only way to discover the murderer’s identity. But can they survive long enough to dig up the truth?

My Take on Following the Trail:

I’ve read almost all the books in the K-9 Search and Rescue series and not one has disappointed me. I really enjoyed this book. It was fast-paced with twists and turns I didn’t expect.

Lacey and Creed have a history with a capital H, and that history comes roaring back when Lacey returns home to find out why her sister wasn’t answering her calls, text, or emails. When she finds her sister dead, Lacey is determined to find justice for her. That’s if she can live long enough. Whoever killed her sister is now trying to kill her. But not if Creed Payne can help it.

Lacey has been gone from Timber Creek for six years after she left her small town for a police job in a bigger city. Creed stayed behind to live his dream of becoming sheriff of Timber Creek–a dream Lacey couldn’t understand–she thought he was destined for bigger and better things. And now she has to ask for his help in finding her sister.

The story has twists and turns that keep you saying, “Just one more chapter…” until midnight. I think readers of romantic suspense will really enjoy it, and if you like a K-9 dog thrown in the midst of one, you’ll enjoy it even more.

So, which do you enjoy most in a romantic suspense? The romance or suspense? Leave your answer in the comments and I’ll enter you in a May drawing for a book from my library.

It’s nice to have romance, or at least a hint of a possible relationship, but I really enjoy the clues and the mystery. Probably a throw-back to my Nancy Drew days! And, yes, a dog is a wonderful addition to the mix.

    Patricia, thanks for sharing.

Powerful photo and matching verse. Thanks for sharing those.

Whew! Lynette is one of my favorite authors, and I can always count on her books to keep me reading, and reading, and… It was after reading “Following the Trail” that I discovered it was #3 in her Timber Creek series, so naturally, I went back for those, too.

I enjoy a good touch of romance with my suspense. But it’s trying to unravel the clues that wins the day for me. And the more twists and turns the better. “Imperfect Justice” by Cara Putman is an excellent example. I’ve just finished it. Don’t you love finding a great author, and discovering you have a whole bunch of new books to read? My TBR list runneth over. 🙂

“Her throat swelling, her eyes burning with tears she wouldn’t release, Aspen Kincaid held her father’s hand.” is the first line from “Inheritance of Secrets” by Robin Patchen; a book I’m starting this morning.

Powerful verse, great review, and the book sounds wonderful. To answer your question, I enjoy the suspense part of suspense-romance stories better, but I know a lot of readers are the exact opposite!

Between the photo and the verse, don’t you just want to shout a big amen? Not only is he God, but our Father. Pretty powerful! Love the photo and verse, Pat.

Great review on Lynette’s book. Like you, I enjoy K-9 stories.

It seems Cara Putman’s, Imperfect Justice, is popular this week. I’m also starting to read it. “As he reviewed the logs from Kaylene’s car, he was impressed. She was venturing beyond the short leash he had given her. So long as she remembered he was in charge, all would be well. But he sensed a growing resistance.”

I prefer suspense and tad of amiable romance.

I enjoy suspense first with a little romance. I have read several in this K-9 series, mostly Heather Woodhaven’s and Carol Post’s, as I review for them. Lynette is a favorite author and this one is on my wish list. I have enjoyed Cara’s books in that series as well. Great series.

I always enjoy Lynette’s books. I need to check this series out. The picture is beautiful. The verse fits it so well. A very powerful and moving verse to hold onto. I enjoy the suspense with a bit of romance.

I enjoy Lynette Eason’s books. I’ve read some of the Love Inspired books also, but our library doesn’t get them. This sounds like another interesting one.

I like the suspense the most. A bit of romance is okay but most readers of romantic suspense know that in over 90% of the cases, the couple will overcome whatever is in their past to get back together again. That seems to be the recurring them for now. From my perspective, if not for the suspense, I would be switching to another genre.

I love the suspense but the romance adds a lightness to it. Beautiful photo and scripture. Blessings

I like a good balance of romance & suspense, which I know as a writer can be difficult to do. I don’t want either one to overpower the other. I think though at times, I lean more into wanting the suspense so I can play novice detective and figure it out before the end of the book. Which, I rarely do, lol! A good writer in my book will keep me guessing until the very last 🙂

I love the K-9 search & rescue books from Love Inspired! This one sounds really good.
