Cold Light of Day; Song of Solomon 2:11

Cold Light of Day by Elizabeth Goddard is this week’s Reader Friday. Here’s the first sentence: Autumn Long had no plans to give up without a fight, even though it might be killing her a little every day.”

And now the photo and Scripture verse. I almost put in a photo of last year’s snow storm here, considering the title of the book, but I figured most of you have seen enough snow. 🙂 This is a photo I took one day last week when it was warm enough to walk. I know winter isn’t past, but spring is closer than it was! And this is a verse I’ve loved since childhood. Do you have any favorite verses from childhood?

Now for Cold Light of Day by Elizabeth Goddard. Here’s the cover and back copy:

Cold Light of Day by Elizabeth GoddardPolice Chief Autumn Long is fighting to keep her job in the quiet Alaska town of Shadow Gap when an unexpected string of criminal activity leaves her with a wounded officer, unexplained murders, and even an attack on her own father. Despite her mistrust of outsiders, she turns to Grier Brenner, a newcomer who seems to have the skills and training Autumn needs to face this threat to her community.

Grier is in Alaska for the same reason so many others are–to disappear–when Chief Long enlists his help. He emerges from the shadows and proves his mettle, but his presence in her life could be a deadly trap for them both. If his secret is exposed, all will be lost. And he’s not sure even Autumn could save him.

As the stakes rise and the dangers increase, Autumn and Grier must rely on each other to extinguish the deadly threats.

My take:

This was such a good book. I already love Elizabeth Goddard’s books. After each one I read, I don’t see how she can write a better one, but this is the best one she’s written. I could not put it down. Dishes went unwashed, clutter stayed where it was until I read the last page.

I love Autumn Long! She is spunky and dedicated and wants to do a good job as police chief. But she has an enemy on the city council, and her father adds fuel to the fire with his drinking. Then along comes Grier Brenner, and he takes her breath away. Not so much with his looks, but the way he’s always there for her. He saves her life more than once and she returns the favor.

Autumn is afraid to fall in love with him because she figures he won’t stick around long. And she knows he has secrets. Boy, does he have secrets, and because he helps her, the men after Grier find him. This is a twisting, fast-paced story that will have you flipping the pages to see what happens next.

I think romantic suspense readers will love this book!

After having a number of below freezing nights, and not very warm days, I’m certainly ready for those spring flowers. I love your photo and verse. From my childhood, Eph. 2:8-9 is quick to come to mind: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”

I just finished “Cold Light of Day”, and I agree with your thoughts on the book 100%. I also am amazed that Liz only seems able to write each new book better than the previous. What a talent!

“When the bearded stranger stepped into the hospital room, a chill slithered down Summer’s spine.” Is the first line from “Courage in the Shadows” by Robin Patchen. This is #9 in the Coventry Saga series. Robin is another of those authors who just gets better and better.

I like the flowers. We had a row of those behind our house. They faithfully bloomed every summer. Then one fall several years ago, the men who mow our lawn mowed them down in the fall. Now, the greenery comes up in the summer but they are always too late for the flowers. I’ve noticed with so many warm days this winter that they are starting to come up. I hope they grow enough to have flowers this year. I’m planning to put stakes around them to keep the mowers from getting them again. The verse has such a soothing sound to it. I love it.

I want to get Elizabeth’s book to read. I’ve enjoyed the ones I have read. This one sounds exciting. I finished a book the night before last but have not had time to start another, so I don’t have a first line. I’m planning on reading a short biography of an NHL hockey player next.

This is quite the happiest photo! I love the angle and the closeup. The Scripture goes perfectly with it. But sadly, very sadly, we didn’t get snow YET this year.

I’m almost finished with Elizabeth Goddard’s Cold Light of Day as well. I agree, it’s excellent!

I think a favorite childhood verse for me would have to be, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

    Book #17 Woo Hoo!

Barbara, I was just about on my head when I took it. lol. Wonder if that’s what started my vertigo… 🙂 I just loved Cold Light of Day!
Philippians 4:13 is one of my favorites, too.

I really enjoyed Cold Light of Day and look forward to the next one. I finished Under Fire by Lynn Blackburn earlier this week. This first line:

US Secret Service Agent Tessa Reed was no stranger to hangovers.

I loved Elizabeth Goddard’s book! A must read if you enjoy suspense. We rarely, if ever get snow where I live in Alabama. We still have daffodils coming up that our daughter planted when she was five (she’s now 40).

Cold Light of Day was a super good book!
    I love the picture.

My first line this week comes from The Last Chance Cowboy by Jody Hedlund:
    Chicago, Illinois. March 1871
“ It’s a boy.” Catherine Remington held the squalling infant upside down by his ankles, making sure he didn’t inhale mucus.

Going to read Lynn Blackburn’s book next week.

I do have a favorite verse from childhood. It’s from 1 Cor 9: “Run in such a way as to get the prize.” The verse reminded my young mind to try hard, no floating aimlessly through life.:-)
Excellent review, Patricia. I grew up in Alaska, so the setting appeals to me.

I’m from Chicago, now living in Las Vegas. We called those beautiful spring flowers daffodils too. They were my mother’s favorite. She was murdered when I was five. I can’t grow them here so I buy a pot each spring. My verse is Matthew 17:20-21. For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”. It stayed with me since I had to memorize for Sunday school at the age of five. It means encouragement to me, and having no other option but to trust God in all the days of my life. In 1970 at the age of twenty-three, I got Hodgkins disease cancer. I had six months to get my affairs in order. Doctors didn’t know much about it. They tried a concoction of meds with the almighty mustard seed, and I’m sitting here today sending you this message. I had to stop buying books for a while. I just started writing a memoir and purchased eight other memoirs as was advised to me to get a feel of one. Mine will be scattered with bible verses and song titles. Different from others. I’ll keep this on a list to buy later on.

I’m so sorry about your mom, DJ. I have a cousin who was diagnosed with Hodgkins when she was about your age and she is like you, doing great! Wishing you the best with your memoir! And do let us know when it’s finished!

Will do. I have so much to say. It will be called “Scarred not Scared Anymore”. The murder, sexual abuse from father. Physical and emotion abuse from first husband. Understanding PTSD from second husband that served in WW11, fiance that served in Vietnam, then died one week before our wedding. How I ended up in Las Vegas with the help of God.
