Case of the Innocent Husband–Reader Friday

Patricia Bradley Reader Friday 35 Comments

The Case of the Innocent Husband by Deborah Sprinkle is this week’s Reader Friday. But first I must apologize for last week’s review. I confused two books that I read back to back…and now you know why I don’t write two books at one time! lol If you click here, you’ll find the correct review!

Now for the first line in The Case of the Innocent Husband: As Private Investigator Mackenzie Love entered Cowan’s Restaurant, eating stopped, and glares from the diners hit her like a barrage of arrows.

But first the photo and Scripture verse. I took this photo of a church near where I work out. I love the way it stretches to the heavens. And I’ve been reading Isaiah this week and love this verse. It’s used several times in the Old Testament. I love the reminder to praise Him because he has certainly done glorious things in my life!

Now for The Case of the Innocent Husband by Deborah Sprinkle. Here’s the cover and back copy:

The Case of the Innocent Husband

When Eleanor Davis is found shot in her garage, the only suspect, her estranged husband, is found not guilty in a court of law. However, most of the good citizens of Washington, Missouri, remain unconvinced. It doesn’t matter that twelve men and women of the jury found him not guilty. What do they know?

And since Private Investigator Mackenzie Love accepted the job for the defense and helped acquit Connor Davis, her friends and neighbors have placed her squarely in the enemy camp. Therefore, her overwhelming goal becomes to find out who killed Eleanor Davis.

Or leave the town she grew up in.

As the investigation progresses, the threats escalate. Someone wants to stop Mackenzie and her partner, Samantha Majors and is willing to do whatever it takes—including murder.

Can Mac and Sam find the killer before they each end up on the wrong side of a bullet?

My Take:

I love this first book in Deborah Sprinkle’s new PI series! And I have to tell you, I didn’t figure out whudunit until the very end! Even though Deborah Sprinkle planted plenty of clues! I just wasn’t thinking like the killer.

This new PI Team is going to be great, and Mrs. P makes a neat addition as their secretary/GirlFriday.  As the love interest, I liked Detective Jake Sanders who is also Samantha’s brother…which could prove sticky if Jake and Mackenzi have a falling out. The story was full of twists that keep the reader guessing until the end. And the last twist I really didn’t see coming. 🙂

I like the simple lines of that church. And the Lord has indeed done glorious things for us, and is worthy of our songs of praise.

I’ve never read anything by Deborah Sprinkle, and this book sounds intriguing. Add another to my TBR. Help, I need more time!

“Amy Baker maneuvered through the afternoon traffic, whispering a prayer for the millionth time that the person responsible for her sister’s death hadn’t discovered his mistake: he’d killed the wrong twin.” is the opening of “Twin Murder Mix-up” by Sami Abrams.

Thanks, Tim! And thank you for letting me know about my misadventure with last week’s review lol I’ll be posting my real review of Sami Abrams’ book, Twin Murder Mix-up- next week. 🙂
Oh, and the church-where it’s located, I can get really good photos of the steeple.

Pat, I’m looking forward to your review of Sami’s book. I’m about 2/3 through it, and it’s great.

I bought the Kindle version of “The Case of the Innocent Husband” since there is no Nook version. I think because it’s on the Kindle Unlimited program. I’ll start it tonight because if I don’t, I’ll forget I’ve got it in the Kindle cloud! Something about age and memory going on here, I think. 🙂

I think you’re right about why it isn’t available for Nook, Tim. I think you’ll really enjoy it. And I do the same thing with books! I forget I have them until I scroll through looking for one I haven’t read. lol

Deborah Sprinkle is a new to me author and this sounds like a good book.

I love a good whudunit, especially one that I can’t figure out until the end! Deborah Sprinkle’s book sounds like it will meet that challenge for me. Good review, Pat.

Amen to that Scripture and the pinnacle on the church that directs our thoughts upward to the Most High One.

I finished reading Flights of Fancy by Jen Turano last night and about laughed myself silly throughout the book. I decided to start Diamond in the Rough, the second book of Jen’s American Heiress series. today. The first line reads, “Any smidgen of hope that her entrance into New York high society would be deemed a rousing success died the moment Miss Poppy Garrison’s tiara became firmly attached to the sleeve of her dance partner. I think it looks like another promising book of hilarity for me.

That steeple is almost identical to the one where I was a church secretary. Very impressive at night when it’s lit up!

I like your picture today. The verse suits it. It’s interesting that you chose today to share the picture. About six years ago, wind tore the upper section of our church steeple off and tossed it into the front yard. The cross at the top had been tilting for a long time, but no one in the church was equipped to go that high to fix it and we did not have the funds to pay to get it done. The same wind shifted the bell tower on which the steeple stood, so we had a problem. This structure stood atop our original building which had become office, classroom, and storage space in recent years. The current sanctuary, built in 1971, does not have a steeple. After some discussion, our church board decided to use the insurance money to completely remove the bell tower and close off the roof of the old building. Just this morning, I thought about all of that and started wondering what it would cost to build a steeple on our current sanctuary with a cross at the top. Then I opened your email and saw this picture.

The book sounds interesting. I’m like Tim: too many books, not enough time.

I started reading Driving Force by Kate Angelo last night. The first line is: Today was going to be a breeze–a thirty degrees below zero in the frozen tundra of Siberia breeze.

That’s really interesting about your church steeple, Edward, since that happened to this particular steeple, and it’s only recently gone back up.
And your first line was intriguing. I’ve not read any of Kate Angelo’s books, so I’ll have to remedy that!

Pat, this is an Elite Guardians book presented by Lynette Eason. I’ve read Lynette’s other Elite Guardians books and enjoyed them. This one has a good start. I’ve only read 40-50 pages so far but like it.

The church is really pretty. The verse fits it well. Makes me think of the hymn Earth and All Stars. This sounds like a fun book. I really like the cover. I’m reading a great book right now. The first line should be very familiar to you. Today was not a good day to die. I started reading Deception last night. I’m really enjoying it so far.

I think my husband would enjoy this book! 🙂

I’m currently reading a Love Inspired Historical by Megan Besing (April 2022) entitled “The Rancher’s Want Ad Mix-up”. First line:
