The Mistakes Crooks Make

Patricia Bradley Mystery Question 33 Comments

This photo was taken by my friend, Cheryl Meints who has a website filled with her photos of flowers, birds and beautiful landscapes. She has so much patience when it comes to capturing just the right photo. To me, this one looks like a painting.

I thought this verse was a good one to address our worry. Over the years, I’ve learned this about worry:

  • Problems will always be with us.
  • Change what you can.
  • If you can’t change the problem, maybe you need to change yourself.
  • Do what you can to fix a problem, then leave it in God’s hands.

These four things are easier said than done, but I’ve learned if I don’t follow them, worry will master me. It will run my life. And I don’t like that. Years ago before cell phones, if we were late arriving home, my mother-in-law would convince herself we’d had a wreck. When we arrived, safe and sound, she’d done all that worry for nothing. I’ve heard that 90% of the things we worry about never happen, so we do all that worrying for nothing.

Enough preaching. Now onto last week’s Mystery Question. Three answers really happened and I made up one. Can you guess which one?
  1. Criminals should be careful of their phone conversations. An off-duty policeman was having dinner at a restaurant and overheard the man behind him talking on his cell phone about a burglary he wanted the other person to help with later that night. The policeman followed him and nabbed both men just after they broke into the business.
  2. Sometimes the police get really lucky…a policeman responding to a burglary report at a house sat down on the couch to take a statement, not realizing a burglar was hiding underneath it. The homeowner looked down and saw the burglar lying flat on his stomach half under and behind the couch.
  3. Two men got into a serious argument. It escalated and became so heated that one of them eventually called the police. When the two had been calmed down, their identification was taken and… bingo! Both of them turned out to be on the police wanted list, a small but important fact they had forgotten during the dispute.
  4.  A criminal called police to clarify what exactly he had stolen during a break-in. The burglar was upset because police had released the incorrect information on what was taken in a recent burglary, which was reported by the media. It was too easy for the police, who were left with a recorded confession to follow up.

And the answer is…#1. Congrats to all who guessed correctly…and that burglar in #2 must have been a small guy!

Now for this week’s Mystery Question. As usual four answers, three of which are true. Can you guess which one I made up?
  1. A woman tried to rob a grocery store with a can of “gas” spray as her weapon of choice. Luckily, the shop assistant realized it was just deodorant.
  2. A man thought he could wear a school uniform — a navy blue miniskirt, white blouse, and shoulder-length brown wig to commit his crimes. He was spotted purse-snatching from a number of women. Unfortunately for the 24-year-old, schoolgirls don’t sport a five o’clock shadow and was arrested at a subway train station.
  3. A man was arrested on drug charges even though police weren’t looking for drugs when they knocked on his door. The police had received a tip that two fugitives were hiding at that address, and since the man knew nothing about that, he gave them permission to search the house. But he added the restriction “everywhere but the garage.” The police naturally decided that this comment was worth a search warrant, and later found the remains of a suspected meth lab.
  4. A woman broke into a house and stole among other things, an unusual brooch. Unfortunately, she put it and a few more items up for sale on eBay and the owner recognized the broach and called police.

Okay, Super Sleuths, which one did I make up? Leave your answer in the comments and I’ll enter you in June’s drawing for a book from my libraryFour statements, three true and one made-up. Can you guess beat me at my game? You might win a book if you try. ptbradley.com/blog Click To Tweet

I’m going w/ #2, although they’re all so nuts it’s hard to believe any are true. However, in our day, probably a number of candidates qualify as #2 also. Cheryl’s photo is fabulous!

Hi, Delores! Yes, Cheryl’s photos are beautiful. I love the calendar she gives me every year with a collection of them. And we’ll see next week if it’s #2. Great to ‘see’ you here.

  2. Tim Johnson

That photo is really fantastic, and the Scripture matches beautifully. Thanks for sharing that, and I’m now checking out Cheryl’s web site!

I’m guessing #1 this time. Who would be afraid of a spray of gas anyway?

Tim, you will be blown away by her photographs. She could easily shoot for National Geographic. Her husband too. And we’ll see next week if it’s #1. Glad to ‘see’ you here today!

    Love the photo.
I’ll say #4. Brooch is spelled wrong. I bet you did that to throw us off!

Not exactly, Paula, but I do type out all the possible answers, so it’s not hard to make a typo! lol Thanks for pointing that out…I’ll fix it now. And we’ll see if the typo helped next week. 🙂

  4. Trixi

I asked “Mr. Random” number chooser and he said #3! I used this because I can see that all of these could be true…as crazy as that is 🙂 Criminals will do anything or say anything to get away with murder (figuratively speaking, of course!).

Great picture and verse! Thanks for sharing those and your “sermon.” Very true.

I choose #2 again. For one thing, I will eventually get it right if I keep guessing the same number. LOL! However, for folks to figure him out because of the five-o’clock shadow, he must have had some beautiful legs. Otherwise, it seems he would have been immediately spotted by his hairy legs. What guy would take the time to shave his legs but ignore the shadow on his face?
