Richard Mabry’s Medical Mystery–Reader Friday

Patricia Bradley Mystery Question 39 Comments

Richard Mabry’s Medical Mystery is this week’s Reader Friday. The first line: “The knuckle of the trigger finger was white with tension.”

But first, the photo and scripture. The photo is another of my friend, Cherly Meints and if you haven’t had a chance to look at her webpage you can check it out here. I never tire of looking at the world through the lens of her camera!

Now on to Richard Mabry’s Medical Mystery. Here’s the cover and back cover copy:

When her phone rang, Diane Macklin wondered what her sister wanted now. Then, she heard that their mother was in the Emergency Room with a heart problem.

The doctor tending to her mother was Dr. Joe Adams, who was far from Diane’s idea of the family doctor. He had been alone since his first wife had died, and was apparently heaven-sent as a mate for Diane, if she could only get past the trauma of her previous near-miss at the altar.

The heart problem was hard to solve initially, the subsequent difficulty turned out to be murder, and affected the lives of both Diane and Joe.

My take:

I love a story with a writer in it and this one captured my attention from the get-go. I enjoyed the budding romance between Dr. Joe Adams and Diane Maclin as they worked together to try and figure out who murdered Diane’s mother. There are enough twists and turns in this fast-paced mystery to satisfy keep a reader guessing to the end.
It was a fast read for me, and Dr. Mabry’s novella kept me turning pages until I finished!

You can find the novella on Amazon for $2.99!

Medical Mystery is a novella, one of my favorite lengths when reading on my Kindle or when I don’t have a lot of time to invest in a longer book. A good story, wrapped up in a little over a hundred pages. How about you?

Leave a comment and I’ll enter you in the January drawing for a book from my library. And I’ll announce the winner of Buried Cold Case Secrets at the same time.

Here’s Richard Mabry’s bio: Dr. Richard Mabry is a retired physician, now writing “medical mysteries with heart.” In addition to his medical books, he is the author of one non-fiction book, several novellas, and thirteen published novels. His novels have been finalists for the Carol Award, the Inspirational Reader’s Choice Award, the Reviewer’s Choice Award, the Selah Award, and others.
He and his wife live in North Texas. In addition to regular efforts (thus far unsuccessful) to improve his golf game, he spends much of his time trying to convince his family that sitting at his desk staring into space does indeed represent work.

I’ve got Mabry’s book too, Patricia, and just finished it this morning. Fun read.:-) I do like novellas. Eh, actually, I like everything from short stories to thick novels.

Your friend Cheryl’s picture is breathtaking, and the verse speaks to me as I am in the middle of a move from Virginia to North Texas. (The chaos of a move is eating into my reading and writing time, but things will settle down soon enough.)

That’s quite a move, Priscilla! And something that will definitely eat into your writing time…not only time-wise but it messes with a writer’s head to break a routine…or at least it does mine. I’m still struggling to get into this first book even though I KNOW it’s due May 2…thanks for stopping by.

I really like Cheryl’s photos, and thank you for guiding me to her web site. That verse is one to ponder.

I prefer novels to novellas, but it depends on the author. Novellas require the author to pack it all in to a small space, and not all are good at that. Then again, some authors have trouble packing it all into a novel! So, for me it’s really the expertise of the author that counts.

“By the time Dodge got to the hospital, he’d already broken his first promise.” is the first line of “Sunrise” from Susan May Warren’s Sky King Ranch series. I’m still reading it, and so far it’s more romantic drama than suspense, but we’ll see as I’m getting to the “good” part. The setting is Alaska, and I’m always impressed with the beauty of that state, when it doesn’t leave me shivering. Tucson will do that to you.

    Stunning photo, more like breathtaking!

I agree with Tim, that verse is one to ponder. I checked out several translations and commentaries, and from what I gather, it’s a great place to be. It’s to be content in whatever and wherever the circumstance one finds themself. A very encouraging Scripture, Pat, thanks!

I do like Richard Mabry’s books, although I haven’t read this one.

I prefer novels, but if it’s a good novella with substance, I’m all in.

Barbara, the Chronological Bible puts Psalm 16 right after David became King, and he was praising God for all He had done for him.

And like I’ve said before, I’ll read cereal boxes so I often read novellas for a quick read. 🙂

*Groan!* HAHA…Tim, you & my husband would get along famously because that is exactly what he would say

Gotta have a sense of humor in today’s world, for sure!

I have enjoyed Richard Mabry’s novellas, including this one. He always grabs and holds my interest. Occasionally, I am disappointed by a novella. Usually it’s because I don’t want it to end. I like your picture.

Great photo! I generally like novels over novellas but I have noticed that some novellas are longer than you would think of a novella. I still have to pick up a book by Richard Mabry. I keep hearing great things about his stories.

Thank you, Alicia! I think you’ll enjoy Doc Mabry’s books. And I’m glad you like the photo and Scripture. When I think of all David went through before he became king, and then he can write this praise psalm reminds me that God always keeps his promises.

I enjoy novellas to novels really, the length doesn’t really matter to me. What does, is content! A good story that pulls me in from the beginning & doesn’t let go until the end is what I enjoy.

Novellas are good for those times that I don’t have a lot of time to read…something I can devour in a day or a few hours. Nothing that feels rushed though, like the author was trying to cram too much detail into a short format. Those are unsatisfactory to me.

I have quite a few of Richard’s books on both my physical & ebook shelves that I haven’t gotten around to reading yet. I do so love a medical thriller! There just doesn’t seem to be enough in the Christian fiction world, or at least, any author I’ve not yet discovered anyway. 🙂
