Really Dumb Criminals — This Week’s Mystery Question

Patricia Bradley Mystery Question 58 Comments

Really Dumb Criminals is this week’s Mystery Question. I am still shaking my head over some of them. But first the photo and Scripture verse.

I had my phone with me earlier this week and captured this photo of a swallowtail butterfly lighting on my lantana. That’s one thing I really like about my phone–I usually have it with me and it has a pretty good camera. And this has long been a favorite Scripture verse for me.

Now for last week’s Mystery Question–Criminals Caught By Stupidity. These are true stories…except for one that I made up. Can you guess which one?
  1. A detective interviewed witnesses to a murder and noticed one witness had an interesting tattoo on his arm. It was a checklist of names and dates. The detective recognized two of the names as murder victims. Further checking matched all of the names and dates to unsolved crimes in the area.
  2. A thief stole more than 100 smartphones at a music festival. iPhone revelers detained him after tracking their phone using an app that comes with the phone.
  3. In 2011, police in California recovered a stolen laptop after being handed clues to its whereabouts. Every time the thief opened the computer, a stealth software program took his photo. The program also took a screenshot showing the man logging into his own e-mail account. Investigators used the information to lure him into an arrest.
  4. An armed man on the run from police live-tweeted the chase. He also posted a photo of a gun, police records show, and the location of a home where he had chosen to hide. Crooks seem to have no idea police check suspects social media.

And the answer is…the very popular #1. Congrats on all who guessed correctly.

Now for this week’s Mystery Question–Really Dumb Criminals. These are true stories…except for one that I made up. Can you guess which one?
  1. Police arrested an armed robber after he boasted on Facebook about his plans to raid a supermarket in a post that included a selfie, a picture of a knife, and the words: “Doing. Tesco. Over.” (Tesco was the name of the store)
  2. After robbing a bank in Arkansas, the suspect fled the state, and the police there had written the crime off as unsolvable until an FBI agent called them. Seems the bank robber supplied his fingerprints when he applied for a job with the LA police department in California.
  3. Two men stopped off at an Internet café and sat down to use the computers. After surfing the web, the two pulled guns and robbed the place, and then sped off on a motorcycle. Would’ve been the perfect crime except one of them failed to log out of his FB account that listed his name and address.
  4. An alleged bank robber was arrested after she posted a video on YouTube claiming to have stolen more than $6,000 at gunpoint. In the video, the nineteen-year-old fanned herself with part of the loot. Did she not know police routinely scan social media for crooks dumb enough to brag about their illegal activities?
Okay, Super Sleuths, which one did I make up this time? Leave your answer in the comments and I’ll enter you in an August drawing for a book from my library!

This was hard! I’m picking #1, because I don’t know what Doing. Tesco. Over means and neither did Siri…. Beautiful photo and verse.
P.s. the blog never showed up in my email. I googled your website to get it.

Pat, did anyone else get on today? Do you have any idea why the link didn’t come to the email. Again, this is through the website.

I think it’s because I had it set to publish at 2200 and then went in and changed it. I just redid it and hope the link will go out! Thanks for asking!!

I saved your picture and verse. It will be shared on Instagram sometime soon. I try to share a verse from scripture every day.
I can’t quite decide between #3 and 4, although I must admit they all seem rather unbelievable!. I’ll choose #4 and see.

Gasp, your butterfly picture is beautiful, and the Bible verse is perfect. I think you made up number 4 because I don’t think 19-year-olds go into banks. They bank online. They’d feel awkward robbing a place they don’t “get.”

My email came through at 3:44. I am guessing #2 this week. Not sure why except to say it seems odd for a robber to want to become employed by a police department.

Great shot of the butterfly among the flowers. I seldom see them sit still long enough to get a picture. I love that verse.

I’m choosing #2. I can see the others happening, but it’s unbelievable that someone would be stupid enough to think a police department would not be checking them out very carefully, especially in a major city like LA. Maybe not in Mayberry, but definitely in LA. Of course, regardless which are true and which is false, they all would come highly recommended for dumb criminal.

Hi Edward! My lantana is a big attraction for butterflies and they like to light on the flowers and tend to stay a while. I think you’re the first to choose #2…we’ll see next week if that the right answer. 😉

That pic looks like a professional shot! Beautiful! As usual, the scripture speaks to our hearts.
I never realized how dumb criminals can be.
#3. I’ve never seen a persons address on their FB account

Beautiful photo and good fit for the verse. Lantana are such good butterfly attractors.

I’m with Edward on this one. I can’t imagine a bank robber later applying for a job with a police department even if it’s in another state. But then again, if they were smart, they wouldn’t get caught. So, #2 for me this week.

Pat, I finished “Deception” last night. Wow, I think it’s your best yet! Thanks for an exciting read.

I’m rather torn between #2 and #4, but I think I’m going with #4 this week. Great shot of the butterfly.!

I really hope #1 is the made up one because who would be dumb enough to announce on Facebook you’re robbing a supermarket along with posting a picture of himself & the weapon of choice? But then again, criminals are pretty dumb aren’t they? LOL! 😀

Beautiful picture of the swallowtail butterfly and that scripture is one of my favorite! I often have to remind myself to keep my mind (and thoughts) on God when I tend to worry too much about something. God’s peace always surrounds me when I think on Him instead of my problems 🙂 What a lovely promise!

Thanks, Trixi! It’s so easy to get our focus off of God and onto our problems. When I do keep my focus where it belongs, the problems are so much easier to deal with. And we’ll see next week if it’s #1.
