Quick And Dead ~ Reader Friday

Patricia Bradley Mystery Question 36 Comments

Quick and Dead; Jeremiah 29:11

Quick And Dead by Lisa Phillips is this week’s Reader Friday. Here’s the first line: Kenna pulled into a space outside the Hatchet County Courthouse. She shoved the gear leaver of her camper van into Park and glanced at her dog. “Stay here.”

But first the photo and verse. I love this photo, but tonight I can’t remember where I took it other than I took it early one morning. And Jeremiah 29:11 has long been a favorite verse of mine. It is so comforting to know that God has a plan for my life that will give me a hope and a future.

Now onto Lisa Phillips’ Quick and Dead.
Quick and DeadThe FBI might’ve buried the truth, but she’ll find it.

Private Investigator Kenna Banbury walks into a courtroom—and finds herself in the middle of a case. She’s looking for a missing young woman no one seems to know and hunting an elite organization that held an entire town in its grip. Something quite different is happening in Hatchet, New Mexico, and Kenna doesn’t have much time to untangle how it all fits together.

Before a deadly killer strikes again.

When someone close to her is threatened, Kenna signs on for a protection detail that quickly turns into a deadly game. She vowed not to let anyone else die for this case. This shadowy organization has already taken too many lives, and she’ll face losing even more before this is over.

Unless Kenna can bring her brand of justice.

My Take:

I loved this suspenseful thriller! Kenna is a strong character and reminds me of a female Jack Reacher. 🙂 She has a strong sense of justice and doesn’t let threats stop her from seeing that justice is done. This is a page-turner with one twist after another.

This is book 3 in the Brand of Justice series, but I haven’t read the first two, and I didn’t have any trouble with knowing what was going on. That said, I’ll be getting the other two books in the series soon!

I love that she is determined to protect innocent people, no matter the cost. Phillips had me turning the pages past midnight to finish! There is a hint of a romance that I expect will develop more in the next book.

This is a story suspense readers will love! It’s available on Amazon and KU

Pat, that photo looks downright scary; like a bolt from heaven. Yet the verse is the opposite; so comforting. There are the scares of life, and the peace and care of God. God wins!

I’m currently finishing up “Edge of Steele” by Susan Sleeman. It begins with “Ryleigh’s future was going up in smoke. Literally. Right before her eyes. She cupped a mask over her mouth and plunged into the smoke and blowing sparks.”

I stayed up until the wee hours this morning finishing up a Lisa Phillips book. I was reading Expired Hope; the first line is, “Peter, you are not at war.” It was a fantastic book!
I’m looking forward to your new release!

Whoa! That’s a powerful photo. When I read that Scripture, also a favorite of mine, the two I’s really popped out to me. “I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD!” Now just rest and delight in me. That’s personal! The King of the universe has got me covered! As Tim mentioned, very comforting.

Quick and Dead sounds like a great read. I like what you wrote about Kenna being a strong character willing to protect the innocent at any cost. Love those kind of characters.

Getting ready to start Stratagem by Robin Carol. The first line of the prologue is, “According to your estimation, she has eight minutes to figure out she can’t open the door unless her employee uses the key he got in the last room.”

    Blessings, Pat!

Great photo and a favorite verse. I am reading Blueberry Blunder by Amanda Flower next. The first line: My heart was racing faster than the little pig that zoomed around the factory as if his curled tail were on fire.

Quick and Dead sounds suspenseful, Patricia! Here’s the first line of the book I’m reading: “Aban paused when he saw the dried blood, even though he knew time was running out.” -Dana McNeely, RAIN (Biblical fiction)

That is some picture. It made me feel like I could step into the center of the blazing light and follow that beam right up to Heaven. Great verse!

I am still reading the book I started last week. I have so much else to do that there has been little time for reading. In the next day or two, I hope to start reading H.L. Wegley’s second book in his Against the Darkness series. The first line: Meiling slid toward Ryan’s side of the bed and poked his shoulder where the Nipah-infected dart had hit him two months ago.

Another great photo, you’re great at capturing the right “Kodak” moment! You probably haven’t heard that saying in awhile. . Jeremiah 29:11 is an absolute favorite verse of mine! Knowing that God had plans for my life , to prosper and no harm, and Hope! That brings such peace.
I’ll be adding this book also to my TBR list. I’ve read Lisa Harris but not Phillips, my list keeps growing!
I’m still on the 4th and final in the Terri Blackstock “Restoration “ series. This one is a nail biter and I’m told I’ll need Kleenex for the end. Thanks for all the great ideas! I love suspense reading.

I’m actually reading two books at the same time, which I never do…lol! But one is an ebook & one is a paperback, they are set in different times & genres so it’s easy to keep the stories straight. So I’ll give first lines to both

First one is from the fourth book in the Pink Pistol Sisterhood series centered around a pink mother-of-pearl inland small caliper pistol. It’s passed down from one woman to another who wishes to find their true love. This one is entitled “Bullet Proof Bride” by Kit Morgan.

    Washington state
    August 1900
“Goldie Colon stared at the apple orchards as the train took on water. They’d been here a while. Her destination was Nowhere, a nothing town in Washington that was as far from her old life as she could get.”

This one from “The Noble Smuggler” by Sian Ann Bessey. I am really living her books, having just recently discovered her writing. Historical fiction is my favorite genre, and she really knows how to write them!

    Lower Tilburg
    Kent 1782
“The slight rustle of a straw mattress filled the quiet bedchamber.
” Lizzie?” At the sound of her mothers weak voice, seventeen-year-old Elizabeth rose from the rocking chair and crossed the small room in three steps. Leaning over the bed, she reached out to grasp the suffering womans’ work-worn hand.”
