Dumbest Robbers Ever — Mystery Question

.Psalm 42:7

Dumbest Robbers Ever is this week’s Mystery question. Do you ever wonder what a criminal thinks about after they do something as dumb as some of these? But first the photo and verse.

When my friend, Cheryl Meints, showed me this photo she’d taken, I immediately thought of the verse in Psalm 42, which has long been a favorite psalm.

Deep calls to deep. I used to wonder what that meant and found this in the Matthew Henry Commentary: Whatever waves and billows of affliction go over us at any time we must call them God’s waves and his billows, that we may humble ourselves under his mighty hand, and may encourage ourselves to hope that though we be threatened we shall not be ruined; for the waves and billows are under a divine check. The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of these many waters… After the storm there will come a calm, and the prospect of this supported him (the psalmist) when deep called unto deep.”

I hope you’ve enjoyed my little dig into Psalm 42:7.

And now for last week’s Mystery question–Tools of the Trade. Three of the technologies are real, and one is a figment of my imagination. Can you guess the one I made up?
  1. Smartwater–This technology allows owners to spray a unique chemical on their possessions to allow for quick identification in case of theft.
  2. Camera Fingerprinter–This technology allows a camera to take pictures at a crime scene and identify fingerprints to send directly to the lab for analysis.
  3. Vomit Inducing Flashlight — The US Department of Homeland Security developed a flashlight guaranteed to bring a fleeing criminal down on his knees. What else would he do when he is gripped by a sudden bout of horrid puking?
  4. Body Odor Bio-metric Identifier– This technology stores the specific body odor of registered criminals that can be used later for canines to identify the culprit by the body odor at a new crime scene.

And the answer is…#2. As far as I know, no camera has been created that can identify fingerprints. 🙂 Congrats on all who guessed correctly.

Now for this week’s Mystery Question–Dumbest Crimes Ever. Three actually happened and one is a figment of my imagination. Can you tell the one I made up?
  1. One criminal didn’t place very high importance on details before he decided to rob a gun store. Not when he went armed with only a baseball bat. Unfortunately for him, the manager pulled one of his guns on the would-be robber and kept him captive until authorities arrived.
  2. The bank robbery was pretty standard until the tellers asked the robber a question. His answer gave away that he was deaf. Realizing this, they sounded the alarm, and the police arrived just as he walked out the door.
  3. The second Sunday in March, a man broke into a church with the intention of robbing the ushers once they collected the money, but before they took it down to the altar. He knew the collection was taken at the end of service. Unfortunately, he’d forgotten that Daylight Savings Time had started. The church was empty except for a retired marine who was collecting bulletins left behind. The marine quickly disarmed the robber and called authorities.
  4. The robber wanted to make sure the bank had the money ready, so he phoned the bank and let them know he was coming to rob it. He intended for them to have the money ready so he could simply pick it up and be on his way. Instead, the bank employees called the police. Authorities were on hand to arrest him when he arrived with his accomplice.
Okay, Super Sleuths, which one did I make up? Leave your answers in the comments and I’ll enter you in a February drawing for a book from my library.

I’ll guess the church and Daylight Savings. Usually churches are open and don’t need to be broken into. Especially during a service.

It might surprise you to know that there are churches that keep the doors locked and keep ushers stationed at the entrances to identify people. It’s a security measure put into place to try to prevent something happening like the mass murder at the church in Charleston, SC a few years ago.

Realizing that three of these are true entitles each to win the fruitcake award! I’m going with #3 because how could the Marine know the would-be robber’s intention? (But maybe…)

Oh, these are good! I burst out laughing on several of them. It’s hard to believe people really did these things. It was difficult to decide between #1 and #4. Ok, I’ll go with #4, but I can see it happening.

The photo is absolutely marvelous as well as the Scripture with it! I love that you gave us the dig into Psalm 42:7. Powerful commentary. I know of a few people with whom I can share this immediately. Please do this anytime you feel led. What a blessing. Thank you, Pat!

Pat, thank you for making me laugh so much this morning! I’m glad there are dumb criminals to give us so much comic relief in these times. I know that seems like an odd statement to make, and perhaps it is. Maybe it’s the sad state of our educational system, or maybe these folks played hooky far too often. Anyway, I think you made up #3. Did the guy ask the marine if he was too late to steal the collection?

That is a beautiful photo. Thanks for the commentary on the Psalm.

He may have, Tim…glad I made you laugh this week…in fact, that’s what I’ll be going for in the coming weeks…unfortunately there’s an abundance of dumb criminals out there. So glad you enjoyed the meme and my commentary.

First, last weeks….if that means 1, 3 & 4 are real…ewwww. I’m surprised we don’t hear about that or again, I don’t pay attention which is fine. I’m ok with that.

Today’s, I think #2. I just can’t imagine anyone being brave enough to ask a question. Bad guys don’t normally like to be questioned. Lol. They all are nutty but #4 made me laugh so loud! What was he thinking trying to be efficient!?

I had to think a little bit on two of these….#4 sounds so dumb that it has to be real, so I’m going to guess #3.

Thank you for writing such entertaining posts! My teenage boys are now hooked on your blog as well! We read them together and all make our guesses and reasons for them. The majority of us are going with #2. We think the bank’s alarm would be silent and that the robber would be able to read lips…

Beautiful photo and verse Pat! I’m not positive but I believe the name of the Chris Tomlin song Beverly referred to is Waterfall. #4

Wow! That looks like some powerful waves. I was never a surfer, but that looks like it would make for some great surfing. The verse is an excellent choice!

So, to use an old expression, the bank robber in #2 really was deaf and dumb. That isn’t my choice. I’m going with #1. It seems there is an old expression that would describe that situation, but I can’t pull it from the recesses of my memory. I can’t quite wrap my mind around going to rob a gun store with only a baseball bat. Maybe the would-be robber didn’t want to risk getting into a shootout.

As always I love your logic, Edward. We’ll see next week. I’ve never been a surfer either, and I don’t know how Cheryl got such a good photo! But when she showed it to me, we both thought of this verse. Thanks as always for stopping by.

I have a hard time believing there are so many dumb criminals in the world!! I am going to go with #3. How would he know the exact time and why would he do it during service? Seems like it would be easier to rob them after the service. But they are all really dumb!

Hi Ellen! I used to have a hard time believing there were that many dumb criminals until I started writing about them. My posts are just the tip of the iceberg and it’s hard to come up with a fictional one! lol We’ll see next week if it’s #3.

I am surprised at last weeks answer! I’ve never heard of Smartwater, and thought sure my answer was correct. That’s what I get for thinking, lol! 😀

I’ll guess #3 this week because I’ve forgotten about Daylight saving time before…though, I’ve never been late to church because of it 🙂 I have to laugh at the robber trying to rob the manager of a gun shop & that a robber would call ahead to make sure the money was ready for him to come and steal from the bank. Wow…some dumb criminals out there….lol!

Thanks for the insight to the Psalm. I always like learning more about the deeper meaning of a particular scripture (no pun intended). For me, it brings a more meaningful insight to light. Love it!

I don’t know of any church in my area that is unlocked while not in use, in fact my husband & I have commented that churches used to be open for people to come in to pray. My guess is #1. Thanks, Barb

Hi Barb! Our church is the same way. It hasn’t been that many years ago that I remember stopping by and praying in the sanctuary during the middle of the week. We’ll see next week if it’s #1.
