Dumb Criminals, Take Two

Patricia Bradley Mystery Question 40 Comments

Another photo taken on an evening walk. I understand that next week, our state will be getting dust from the Sahara Desert, and that will make for beautiful sunrises and sunsets! I can’t wait. Next week I start on Obsession, the third Natchez Trace Park Ranger book!

Okay, it looks like I scheduled the post for the wrong day. lol. We’ll go with it though!

Now onto last week’s Mystery Question. Three are true and I made one up. Let’s see how you do this week guessing which one I made up.
  1. Two men were found with marijuana in their car in a state where it was not legal. While they were being questioned and the police had possession of their phones, one of the men received a text asking the man to water his weed, please…yep, the police went to his address and found a small plantation.
  2. When a man broke into his neighbor’s apartment by using a bank card, he woke up the owner. In the thief’s haste to get away, the card snapped in half, leaving behind his name and account details. The police found the other half of the card on his kitchen table when they went to the address they obtained from the credit card company.
  3. One thief got more than he bargained for when he reached into the window of a parked car and snatched a tote. The bag belonged to a professional snake catcher who had just captured a venomous snake.
  4. A cocky burglar posted photos on Facebook of places he burglarized. He was smart enough to create a fake account that couldn’t be traced back to him. Unfortunately, he wasn’t smart enough to notice a mirror at one home. A mirror that under intense scrutiny captured him taking the photo that allowed police to identify him.

And the answer is…#4! No one guessed that one. 😀 I really have a hard time believing a man carried a snake around in a bag in his vehicle! But it did happen in Australia…here’s the link.

Now onto this week’s Mystery Question. Three answers really happened and I made up one. Can you guess which one?
  1. Criminals should be careful of their phone conversations. An off-duty policeman was having dinner at a restaurant and overheard the man behind him talking on his cell phone about a burglary he wanted the other person to help with later that night. The policeman followed him and nabbed both men just after they broke into the business.
  2. Sometimes the police get really lucky…a policeman responding to a burglary report at a house sat down on the couch to take a statement, not realizing a burglar was hiding underneath it. The homeowner looked down and saw the burglar lying flat on his stomach half under and behind the couch.
  3. Two men got into a serious argument. It escalated and became so heated that one of them eventually called the police. When the two had been calmed down, their identification was taken and… bingo! Both of them turned out to be on the police wanted list, a small but important fact they had forgotten during the dispute.
  4.  A criminal called police to clarify what exactly he had stolen during a break-in. The burglar was upset because police had released the incorrect information on what was taken in a recent burglary, which was reported by the media. It was too easy for the police, who were left with a recorded confession to follow up.

Okay, Super Sleuths, which one did I make up? Leave your answers in the comments and I’ll enter you in June’s drawing for a book from my library!

There seems to be a pattern this time: either the police get called by the criminal or overhear the criminal talking, except for #2. I don’t know about the couches in the homes of most people, but a burglar would have to be smaller than a New York minute to get under my couch. Furthermore, why would a police officer be sitting down to take a report before clearing the house. And if the burglar was that obvious, why hadn’t the homeowner seen him sooner? I think this is the one.

First, congratulations for stumping us all! I think that’s a first since I started following your blogs.

I’m going with #4 this time. I know crooks are not usually the brightest bulbs, but calling to correct a police report? Ego must be bigger than his IQ. 🙂

While we get some pretty nice sunsets and sunrises here in Tucson, we supply our own dust. Lately those displays have come largely from smoke from the Bighorn Fire on the mountain range just north of town. Please pray for the affected residents, and especially for the firefighters who have been dealing with this hard to fight fire in triple digit temperatures. Containment dropped from 40% on Friday to 16% this morning.

Yes, Tim…we all need to keep those involved in the Bighorn Fire. We had firefighters from my area to go there and help. And thanks for the congratulations on stumping you! 🙂

You’re getting pretty good at these if you tricked everyone last week.:-)

This week I’m picking number 4 because SURELY a criminal isn’t THAT dumb! And if he is that dumb, he made me chuckle, so I’m still picking number 4.

I did notice you posted early…I thought maybe I had the day wrong, so I looked at my calendar just to make sure, lol!
I am going to guess #4 this week because it made me laugh the most! You might have tricked us with #4 two weeks in a row…or not 🙂

These are fun as always! Love your sunset picture, Patricia. They are beautiful here on the Oregon coast too.

Interesting… Number 4 seems to be really popular, but I can totally see that one happening. Burglar is stupid but proud of his accomplishment, stealing specific items, and gets annoyed when the police get the items wrong. Is OCD and has to call and correct them. Yup, totally logical. Number 3 is a different story. In all the books I’ve read, criminals do not just forget they are criminals and call the cops. Not even if they are being killed. So unless they were under the influence of some drugs or something that totally screwed with them, it just doesn’t seem plausible. And the snake from last week – I should have realized it would be Australian! Anything can happen over in Aussie – they have some pretty interesting characters!

I thought if I put it happened in Australia, Monique, you figure out it was true. 🙂 And we’ll see if your logic proves correct in this week’s Mystery Question. Thanks so much for stopping by!

Yes, you should write a book using the ones you’ve made up. Do you really mean MS is getting dust from the Sahara Desert? (Wow!) You’ve hit the jackpot this week w/ great stumper stories. I wonder what last week’s thief did w/ the snake in a bag (guess I’d better check the link.) I want this week’s all to be true but I’ll go with #3 this time. (I love picturing #1 & #2 especially.)
