Can You Insure It? is this week’s Mystery Question. A little deviation from the really dumb criminals…but first the photo and verse.

I had my word count for the day, and it was perfect weather for a picnic — not too hot and beautiful skies. We went to South Holston Dam and Lake and were going to the picnic tables on the other side of the dam. Unfortunately, the road across the dam was closed, so we came back to the Weir Dam picnic area, which is in the same area.

Then we drove around to South Holston Lake, where I took the photo at the top of the page. Last fall I took a photo from the other side of the lake that you can check out.

I thought the verse fit perfectly.

Now for last week’s Mystery Question: Below you will find four headlines in the news. Three actually happened. I made up one. Can you guess which one?
  1. Man confesses to crime the day after he thought the statute of limitations had passed. Unfortunately, he was off a day and was charged with the crime.
  2. Fugitive makes a deal with PD to surrender if his wanted poster got 15K likes.
  3. Man detailing how he built bombs at his trial advised by the judge to exercise his Fifth Amendment rights.
  4. Man escapes murder charge due to victim dying from a fatal disease at the exact time the killer was completing his task.

And the answer is… actually #1…However, it seems I misled everyone…I found #4 on a website of crazy crimes, but when I looked for the link again, I discovered this:

This exact scenario is a famous legal hypothetical used in criminal law classes, not a real court case. Because a murder charge requires the perpetrator to be the actual cause of death, the killer cannot be convicted of murder if the victim naturally died of a fatal illness the exact same second the fatal strike occurred.
The scenario is resolved in the legal system as follows:
  • No Murder Conviction: You cannot murder a person who is already dead. If the victim succumbed to a disease at the exact millisecond the killer completed their task, the killer would escape the murder charge because their actions did not legally cause the death.

So congrats to all who guessed #1 and #4!

Now for this week’s Mystery Question
  1. A jewelry store offered to refund their Christmas sales if the city got more than three inches of snow on Christmas day. Good thing because they got eight inches.
  2. After someone attempted to steal Liberace’s candelabra, he insured it for one million dollars.
  3. Speaking of celebrities, J. Lo insured her rear for $27 million dollars.
  4. A burglar who was trapped in his victim’s garage for a week after the garage opener malfunctioned. He sued the homeowners for mental anguish and collected a million dollars.

    It looks like a lovely place for a picnic, Pat. You picked the perfect verse to go along with the picture.

    I’m picking number 3, and if I’m wrong, our society has gone loopy!

    Picnic near a lake in the mountains. Yup, count me in. Thank you for sharing the photo and story. Good verse to match it. The other photo you linked is really nice, too.

    Insurable???
    #1. Betting on snowfall amount? Seems risky.
    #2. That was his trademark of sorts.
    #3. Well… no comment.
    #4. Not a very good burglar if he can break in but not out.
    I suppose almost anything could be insured, but #4 doesn’t seem to involve insurance beyond normal homeowner’s liability insurance. I think you made this one up.
