photoLast week, Suzy hijacked my blog, but this week, I willingly yield to Michelle Lim, but first I want to announce the winner of Carole Brown’s book, Bat Crazy. It’s Delores Topliff! Now on to Michelle…

If you’ve ever thought about writing a book, November is the time to do it. It’s National Novel Writing Month, and there are so many places to get encouragement! But you can’t just wake up one day and decide to write a novel. There are a few things you need to do, and my friend and fellow romantic suspense writer, Michelle Lim is going to tell you what you need to do.

I met Michelle through a My Book Therapy retreat and she’s helped me so much along my writing career. So, without further ado, Here’s Michele!

Romantic Suspense is my favorite genre to read. Don’t get me wrong, I love lots of different genres, but romantic suspense and I have a long-standing relationship.

Great romantic suspense writers know how to get the mood on the page. They send us to the top of the basement stairs where the heroine stares down into the dark.

One of the biggest challenges for the NaNoWriMo writer is to have quality writing of any kind in their rough draft. Wait a minute.

We’re not really supposed to, right?

Nope. Not so much. But if you can add a splash of mood to your writing without slowing down it would make editing that much easier. It isn’t impossible. Here’s how.

How To Get In The Mood For NaNoWriMo:

*Gather mood sparking music. Think of all the different moods you are likely to encounter in your coming manuscript. Select instrumental music that will put you in the mood to listen to before you write a scene or while you write, depending on your writing preference.

*Gather mood sparking photos. Find pictures in your life that inspired the emotions you are trying to write in a variety of scenes. Be careful not to pick photos that are too powerful for you to continue to write productively after viewing.

*Gather mood sparking resources. Find resources like scenes of some of your favorite movies and books. When you need a new spark of inspiration, watch or read one scene that puts you in the right mood for the place in the story your hero/heroine will be in that day.

My favorite genre? So hard to choose. I love historicals, contemporary romances, thrillers, and stories that weave the past with the present. Great ideas, Michele. I’m doing “NaNoWriMo Lite” and shooting for 25,000 words this year.

I love romantic suspense and have developed a fondness for light-hearted, light-on-the-romance mysteries. I figured I should read what’s out there since that’s what my next series is. 😉
