The First line Friday of the book I’m reading is from DiAnn Mills’ Airborne! An awesome book nominated as a finalist in the ACFW Carol Awards this year! Congratulations, DiAnn!
First, though I want to mention the scripture verse. This verse has sustained me so many times over the years. Right now it’s getting me through the final few pages of the book I’m working on, Deception, and the final, final edits of Crosshairs! Both are due next week! EEEk!!!
By the way, Crosshairs is due to release on November 2!
Now for the first line Friday book: Airborne: Vacations offered a distraction for those who longed to relax and rejuvenate, but FBI Special Agent Heather Lawrence wrestled with the decision to take an overseas trip alone.
Backcover copy:
Heather Lawrence’s long-awaited vacation to Salzburg wasn’t supposed to go like this. Mere hours into the transatlantic flight, the Houston FBI agent is awakened. Passengers are exhibiting horrific symptoms of an unknown infection. As the virus quickly spreads and dozens of passengers fall ill. Heather fears she’s witnessing an epidemic similar to ones her estranged husband studies for a living—but this airborne contagion may have been deliberately released.
While Heather remains quarantined with other survivors, she works with her FBI colleagues to identify the person behind this attack. The prime suspect? Dr. Chad Lawrence, an expert in his field . . . and Heather’s husband. The Lawrences’ marriage has been on the rocks since Chad announced his career took precedence over his wife and future family and moved out. As more victims fall prey days after the initial outbreak, time’s running out to hunt down the killer, one who may be closer to the victims than anyone ever expected.
Okay, Readers, what’s the first line of the book you’re reading? Leave it in the comments and I’ll enter you in a drawing for a book from my library!

Good first line, makes me want to know why Heather is alone this time. Good luck getting your word done on Deception and Crosshairs!

Thanks, Priscilla, and I just realized I didn’t ask everyone to leave the first line of the book they’re reading!
I loved that book! For me: ‘”I know what you did.”‘ Three Missing Days by Colleen Coble
Author
I love that first line, Monique!
Fun first lines. Never played this before. Mine is “everyone down! Any quick moves and we’ll shoot. Understand?” Key Witness by Christi Barrett. Love the verse you posted. Didn’t know Obsession was on sale as well. Grabbing it now. Standoff was great.
Author
I love Christi’s books, Toni! And that’s a great first line.
I love the verse you quoted this week. It is great to know that God is our rock, and that we can lean on Him. My first line is, “Nate Price sat down to breakfast a happy man. What was there not to like about life?” This comes from Magnolia Moonlight by Mary Ellis
Author
Linda, what a perfect setup–you just know the author is about to make his life miserable. lol
It was a great book, really enjoyed it.

It is a great book, Delores.
Loved the verse and photo, Pat. Good inspiration for getting your book work finished!
I read DiAnn’s “Airborne”, and it was a fantastic read! Her timing was perfect considering the pandemic we were experiencing.
“The wrought iron gate swung inward under a steel-gray sky.” is the first line from Carol Post’s “Bodyguard for Christmas” novel, part of her Murphy, NC series. Rather innocuous until you read more of the chapter. I recently discovered Ms Post’s books from her contribution to a continuity series, and have been reading them through starting from the first one. I highly recommend her Christian suspense.
Author
Hi Tim! I hopped over to Amazon and picked up Carol’s latest LIS–Trailing a Killer. I’ll check out Bodyguard for Christmas next. 🙂
Pat, can I cheat? While I really enjoyed Carol Post’s “Bodyguard for Christmas”, the first line was not a real grabber, but it was the book I was reading at the time. In fact, I finished it a short time later. The next book I chose was Ramona Richards’ “Face of Deceit”. Here is the beginning of this book: “‘Not Again!’ Karen O’Neill stared at the pottery shards clustered at the base of the open door, a twinge of fear tightening her chest.”
The book is about a person who makes pottery for a living, and the book is about someone who doesn’t like what she makes. Now, I seem to recall there is someone here who has been know to throw some mud on a wheel from time to time, so this should be an appealing book for her. Besides, it has a cute cat as well. How could it miss? 🙂
Author
Indeed you can, Tim, but I wouldn’t call it cheating. lol. Ramona’s book is one I’ve read and loved. And yes, I’ve been known to throw mud on a wheel and see what happens. I actually hope to glaze and fire pieces I made over two years ago once I get these two books in!
Thanks for sharing. This week I’m reading a middle grade series in order to chat with a young reader who loves them. Book 3, Artemis Fowl: The Eternity Code: “For the past two years my business enterprises have thrived without parental interference.” (Here, Artemis is 13 years old.)
This made me laugh out loud. I’ll have to look those books up. I have a couple kids around that age.
Author
Rick, that sounds like a great book for kids…and adults. I’ll have to check them out.
A loud thud from the apartment above made Kane McDowell flinch and sit straight up in the recliner. From In the Fire by Margaret Daley
Love the picture and verse!
Author
Thanks, Edward. And that sounds like an intriguing book! I noticed Margaret Daley has several books on sale for 99¢!
What a lovely, peaceful photo. One of my favorite verses too.
My 12 year old has been reading this one so it was close at hand:
“For 25 years or more, I’ve been traveling this land of ours and a few foreign countries trying to teach and preach by word of mouth and example, that a Christian businessman owes as much to God as a preacher does. The rest of the time I build machinery, almost any kind of machinery as long as it is big, and powerful, and can move around to do things no other machine could do before.” (R.G. LeTourneau: Mover of Men and Mountains)

That sounds like a great story, Elizabeth! I’m so impressed with your 12-year-old!

Patrick walked next to the railroad tracks as he searched for an open boxcar. From Night Fall by Nancy Mehl. Beautiful picture and a good verse to hold on to. Airborne sounds really good. Really enjoyed Standoff and Obsession. Looking forward to Crosshairs!

I saw you gave it a great review on Goodreads. I’m really enjoying it so far. It’s very hard to put down!
Loved the verse and photo as always. Thank you for sharing. “While some adjusted to air raid sirens and others to the lost light of blackouts, Diana Somerville never recovered from the absence of church bells.” The London Restoration by Rachel McMillian

Love that line, Caryl! Books sounds intriguing!
This week I am featuring Chasing Shadows by Lynn Austin, a stupendous book!
The Netherlands. may 1945 prologue
Every sound in the coal-black night seemed magnified as Lena lay awake in bed, waiting. She heard the quiet rustlings of the shadow people as they crept through the darkness in her farmhouse.
Airborne was very interesting. Eerily gets you thinking about what could happen today.
Author
Very good, Paula! This sounds like a book I’d really like. And Airborne definitely gets you thinking after what we’ve been through.
“Laney Hamilton couldn’t shake the feeling she was being followed.” ~first line from Buried Evidence from Kellie Vanhorn (Love Inspired Suspense).
I believe this is her second LIS book, so she’s a fairly new author. But, this book is fantastic so far! Laney is a forensic anthropologist (studies bones) and is helping solve a ten year old cold case that could turn out to be her long-missing best friend. Plus, she’s working with the police sergeant who happens to be the said best friends brother. Talk about an already ramped up tense setting! I’m about halfway through and I can’t wait for the final explosive page; it’s already proven to be one that keeps me glued to it!
Ooops, I didn’t add that the police sergeant is also her ex-boyfriend.
Trixi, that sounds like my kind of book! Thank you for tipping us off to this author. Definitely on my TBR now.
Tim, I’m so glad! I just got done reading it last night, and boy is it ever a doozy of a read….in a good way, of course! The ending took me by surprise, for sure. I hope you get a chance to read it soon 🙂
If you want to check out her first Love Inspired Suspense book….it’s called “Fatal Flashback”. I read that one as well & I think it’s just as good! The heroine is an FBI agent who was left for dead & has amnesia because of it. That really ramped up the suspenseful feel!
Author
I love that first line, Trixi! I’ll have to find that book!
I am juggling five different books right now! The first line of A Cowboy of Her Own by Patty Smith Hall :
Carter Wilbanks grabbed his younger sister and tossed her over his shoulder like a sack of cornmeal.

That’s a great opening line, Sally Jo! Thanks for leaving it.
