Susan Sleeman’s Cold Truth–What I’m Reading

Susan Sleeman's Cold Truth; Isaiah 43:1b

Susan Sleeman’s Cold Truth is this week’s What I’m reading book. Here’s the first line: “Want to play a game?” the scrambled voice rasped through Kiera’s phone.

But first the photo and verse. The photo is from my trip to Israel and the verse is one of my go-to verses when I’m troubled. If God has called me by name, and I am His, I can get through anything.

Now for Susan Sleeman’s Cold Truth.

I wasn’t certain I’d have time to read a book this week, but Tuesday night I just had to read a bit and chose Cold Truth planning to read just a page or two…at midnight I forced myself to put the book down and get some much-needed rest! Here’s the cover and back copy:

Cold Truth, A Cold Harbor NovelWant to play a game…
When research chemist Kiera Underwood receives a cryptic phone call about her twin brother, she tries to contact him to no avail. Her twin sense tingles, warning her that something is wrong. When he doesn’t return her call, and the manager at Oceanic Labs claims he didn’t come into work that day, she heads to Cold Harbor. But when she arrives in town to find the door to her bother’s house ajar, she races to the lab to question his fellow employees.

Solve the puzzle and save your brother…
Kiera’s not prepared when someone makes an attempt on her life and Blackwell Tactical operative and former Army Ranger, Cooper Ashcroft delivers her second shock of the day. Someone killed the lab supervisor and stole a deadly biotoxin. The main suspect? Her brother. Oceanic Labs hires Blackwell Tactical to bring him in. If that wasn’t shocking enough, Cooper suspects her of colluding with him. She had nothing to do with the theft or murder, and despite the evidence staring her in the face, she knows that her brother is innocent of all charges. She sets out to prove it, and she’s soon the victim of a near abduction thwarted by Coop. He’s faced with the reality that she’s telling the truth and someone has likely abducted her brother—perhaps killed him—and now Kiera’s very life is in danger, too.

My take on Susan Sleeman’s Cold Truth:

I loved this story. I liked Kiera’s determination to find her brother and prove he wasn’t guilty of murder and stealing the toxin. The villain was very clever, and it was hard to figure out how the theft went down–there was only one way to get into the lab and that was with her brother’s fingerprint. The villain figured out a way around the fingerprint, but you’ll have to read the story to see what it is.

Cooper was a great hero. Handsome, determined–almost as determined as Kiera, who was not immune to his charming ways. This is the second book in the Cold Harbor series and I have three of the others, but not the next one, so I’ll have to remedy that.

I only read at night, and I finished the book the second night at one a.m., not the wisest decision I’ve made when I needed the sleep. I think romantic suspense readers will enjoy Cold Truth!

It is a comforting verse! Great review, I’m already rooting for Kiera and Cooper. I’m reading and ARC of The Insurgent by Teri Polen. It’s book 2 of a YA science fiction series, definitely not my typical reading genre, but it’s good to stretch my reading skills from time to time.

Priscilla, I enjoy a lot of YA books. 🙂 The first few verses of Isaiah 43 have been some of my favorites especially when life gets overwhelming. But if God calls us by name, He can’t be too far away. that gives me comfort.

Neat photo, and I love that verse, too. God knows my name, and He knew it before He created the universe, as another passage states. Powerful comfort.

Pat, thanks for the refresh on “Cold Truth”. I love Susan’s books, and that she keeps the characters around from past series. It makes them seem more real when they “live” on.

“When Jackson, Wyoming, police officer Morganne Kimball’s cell phone rang at four in the morning, she knew it was bad news.” is the first line of “Fugitive Hunt” by Laura Scott. It’s #6 in her Justice Seekers series. Laura is another of my favorite authors.

Definitely a great go to verse. I have a copy of it by my bed to read to read each morning and night. Great photo. Do you remember the location for it?

Susan’s books always have me guessing and doing all nighters. My TBR pile is so big, but I can’t resist adding another book to it. Thanks for the great review that came from burning the midnight oil to try to finish it this week.

“The stack of cash on his desk was so close to genuine currency as squeeze cheese was to Brie.” Malicious Intent by Lynn Blackburn is the book I’m trying to find time to read next.

Love Lynn’s books, Barbara! And yes, I was burning the midnight oil this week and last night was no exception. I wrote this post after ten…misspelled Israel, which a good friend pointed out early this morning so I could fix it. 😉 Thank you, DT

Isaiah has some great verses for comfort. 41:10 is my go-to. I enjoy Susan’s books and the Cold Truth series is on my TBR mountain. I am reading The View from Coral Cove by Amy Clipston.
Maya giggled as she raced down the beach to the ocean waves, breathing in the salty air and enjoying the feel of hot sand between her toes.

I’m reading James Patterson – Jailhouse Lawyer. First line – I wasn’t present at the courthouse in Erva, Alabama. on that morning in June, when events unfolded that would suck me into the undertow of Douglas County.

I like the picture. The verse has such a powerful message. Even when others want to give me nicknames (or maybe worse), God knows my real name. He calls me by my name even when others won’t. I love that.

I think I have read all of Susan’s Cold Harbor books and all she has written since then. She has written some real good stories. I am currently reading Relative Justice by Robert Whitlow. I enjoy the settings of his books, with most of them set somewhere near the ocean. This one is set in Wilmington, NC. This one begins: Emerson Chapplle, PHD, removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes. He’d been grading papers for the chemistry class he was teaching… Emerson didn’t like teaching. Research was his passion.

Oh, goodness, Edward, it’s been ages since I read one of Robert Whitlow’s books and I love them! I will get one in the next couple of weeks and read it, maybe this one. 🙂 I’m glad you enjoyed the photo and verse! With this deadline about to kill me, I’m going back to some of the memes I’ve created in the past to save time. 🙂

Beautiful picture and great verse. It really is very comforting. I’m going to have to check this book out. It sounds really good. I’m reading Colors of Truth by Tamera Alexander. Catriona held tight to her younger sister’s arm, knowing better than to loosen her grip when surrounded by such tempting delights.

Beautiful photo. It sounds like a really interesting book. Thank you for sharing. This comes from Detection Detail by Terri Reed. Officer Nelson Rivers puzzled over the mysterious car fire he and his accelerant detection dog, a yellow Lab named Diesel, had recently worked. An unconscious, unidentified victim. A possible missing baby. Who set the fire and why?

Today I’m starting Grace Hitchcock’s book “Her Darling Mr. Day”, the second in the American Royalty series. I’m SO excited because I LOVED the first book “My Dear Miss Dupre”!! I was on pins and needles wanting to find out who Willow finally married 🙂 SO, SO good.

Anyway, Susan Sleeman is one of my “go-to” suspense writers. I have lots of book series to catch up on and this is one of them. Thankfully they are available through Kindle Unlimited or my digital library to borrow. One of these days I may actually be able to make the time to read them…lol! So many books, so little time!
