Paws For Alarm–What I’m Reading

Paws for Alarm Ps4:8

Paws for Alarm by Amy Hueston is what I’m reading this week. It’s book 2 in a cute series about a dog bakery, but more on that later.

First I want to talk about the photo and verse. The photo is of the April 26th full moon. I just happened to be out Monday night when it topped the trees across the street from me. It was SO big! It’d been a really difficult day since my daughter is back in the hospital. She’d had to do without food or water all day, and then the doctor comes in and says the procedure has to be put off until morning…

When I saw the moon, it was like God telling me everything would be all right. I was reminded of this psalm that David wrote when he was running for his life. Even though someone was trying to kill him, he could lay down and sleep, knowing he was in God’s hands. And that’s what I did Monday night. I slept well for the first time in a few days. And now my daughter is better and on her way to recovery!

Paws for ConcernNow for Paws for Alarm by Amy Hueston:

One murder is bad enough …

But two murders in a month on the same strip of Worth Avenue in Palm Beach is enough to whip Samantha Armstrong into a frenzy.

When Samantha relaxes into her new role as a dog mom, finds a circle of friends in her new hometown, and sees her new dog bakery Canine Confections barking up business, she’s thrilled. Things are going so well … until she hears a bloodcurdling scream from the pastry shop two doors down. There she finds a dead body on the floor.

Suddenly Samantha finds herself in a race against time. She must find not only the thief who is stealing from the upscale shops, but a murderer, too. Samantha’s Lab-Mix Sweet Pea wags her tail through all of the clues, suspects and shenanigans. Both Samantha and Sweet Pea are aided in their amateur investigation by the other shopkeepers on the elegant Worth Avenue, and Samantha finds the suspect list growing at every turn.

To make matters worse, Samantha’s old boyfriend arrives in town, and mysterious people start showing up at the Sophisticated Pet and New Age stores nearby. Samantha soon finds that things are not what they seem, and she must figure out what’s going on—or become the next dead body on a bakery floor.

Includes an original recipe from the world-famous Three Dog Bakery!

My Take on Paws for Alarm by Amy Hueston:

Cozy fans will love this 2nd book in Amy Hueston’s series about a dog bakery! Paws for Alarm is full of twists and turns and red herrings. Once again Samantha is up to her eyeballs in a murder investigation. At the same time, she’s trying to get her doggy bakery business off the ground before her great aunt loses her home.

Not only does Samantha have to find a thief and a murderer, but her ex-boyfriend who cheated on her with her best friend also shows up. He wants to get back together. So far, she’s not having it and I hope she stays true to that. Of course, I’m rooting for the other guy–Rick Newman, the owner of Sophisticated Pet. And I hope Detective Trumble and Aunt Mary get together, but it looks like I’ll have to wait for the next book on that.

Paws For Alarm is a very enjoyable read!

Diana, thank you! If you like mysteries, dogs and/or pastry, this might be a fun read for you. Paws for Concern is the first book in the series, but this one can stand alone…just in case you’re interested. 🙂

That’s a comforting Scripture verse. I’m so glad your daughter is getting better, Pat.

I’m batting 0 for 3 in the cozy mystery department. While I like humor with my suspense, the cozies I’ve tried to read are just too sugary for me. Maybe I’m turning into a grumpy old man 🙂

Tim, this one isn’t sugary at all…and I’m sure you’re not turning into a grumpy old man. lol I do like a little more bite in my cozies than in some. Blessings!

I did read a book titled “Paw Enforcement” by Diane Kelly some time ago. If that could be considered a cozy, it was OK, but I didn’t read any more in the series. I’ll reconsider “Paws for Alarm”. Sometimes I just need a nudge.

Tim, start out with Paws for Alarm. this book is a stand-alone, but I think you’ll enjoy it more if you read the first book. 🙂 And it’s on Nook!

      3. Amy Hueston

Patricia, not sugary except for all the dog treats at the Canine Confections dog bakery. Ba dump bump (that was a drum beat thing, in case it didn’t translate). Yeah, I think maybe it’s not that sugary but honestly, I don’t read a lot of cozies b/c I find a lot of them dull b/c of my taste for twisty thrillers, psychological stuff and horror. But if there’s humor I like them, and if there’s a mystery to unravel, I like them. Paws for Concern is Book 1 if you want to start with book 1 in the Canine Confections series, Tim but like Patricia said, Paws for Alarm, Book 2, can stand alone. Patricia, do you consider your books to be grittier than cozies since they are straight up mystery rather than cozy? I like your characters, settings, and having to figure out the mystery in your books.

Hi Amy. So good to ‘see’ you here. My stories are romantic suspense. And if it weren’t for the covers, I’d classify yours as mysteries. Those are really good covers, by the way! Looking forward to the next book!

    2. Amy Hueston

Tim, I feel ya! 😀 I actually love to read psychological thrillers and am writing one now. I also love the Stephen King classics like The Shining and horror movies like Psycho. So I’m on board with the sugary thing. Maybe take a try with Book One, Paws for Concern and if not, maybe you’ll like my future suspense books. Thanks for your comment. I do love hearing from readers. And Pat, I agree with Mr. Tim :), I’m so glad your daughter is on the mend.

Thanks for your reply, Amy. I was about to do just that last night before I drifted off. Unfortunately, your book is not available for the B&N Nook. There was another by the same title, but not yours. Since I hardly read book I can’t get on the Nook, I decided to pass. So… is there any chance there might be a Nook version in the future?

I enjoyed the world of the first book so look forward to reading this. Sorry your dtr. had to do w/o food and water all that day only to be postponed again. These are not fun experiences. Praying for good steady steps forward now and for your peace of mind as well.

Angela, so good of Patricia to write to us even during her daughter’s time in hospital, isn’t it? Books can be such a comfort. So can nice people. 🙂

Love that scripture! Great pic! Praying your daughter has quick recovery. Cozy mysteries are not my favorite read, but this one looks interesting.

Hi, Jackie. Per my comment to Tim above, I understand. 🙂 I try not make mine too sugary and sweet, which when it comes to the dog parts, is difficult for me to do b/c I’m one of those ridiculous people who talks to her dogs like they are precious rose petals (which they ARE…). 😀 Thanks for stopping by and commenting about my series.

I enjoy cozies mixed in with other books. I like a variety. So glad your daughter is on the mend. It is hard when our loved ones are hurting, whether physical or emotional, especially our children, even when they are adults.

My husband is more of a cozy mystery lover than me, so I’ll point him to these books! 🙂 But I do like stories with dogs (or any animal) in them.

Oh and I see I won a copy of Nancy’s book….whoohooo! Thank you so much Patricia, I really enjoy her books.

Thanks for reminding me that I need to get your book to you! Amy Hueston’s cozy mysteries are good, not too sweet and really good characters. 🙂 Good to ‘see’ you here.

  9. Edward Arrington

Does that old expression about the world going to the dogs apply here? LOL! I’m not sure about this one. Maybe it’s because I have gotten so far behind in my reading that I don’t even see a light at the end of the tunnel. You make it sound appealing but too many books and not enough hours is about to get to me.

I think I just need to spend some time focusing on that picture and verse. I really appreciate what you shared about seeing the moon at a time when you needed to be uplifted.

I know exactly what you mean about too many books and not enough time, Edward! Last night I read until midnight and was so mad at myself, but the book was really good. lol Especially since I get up by 6 each morning. I’ll be reviewing the book I read last night sometime in the near future.

Anytime I’m anxious or overwhelmed the night sky will calm me down. I think it’s partly because it reminds me of when I was a kid and my dad taught us about the constellations but mostly because it reminds me how big God is. Thanks for stopping by, Edward.

    2. Amy Hueston

Edward, spending time focusing on the picture and verse sounds like an EXCELLENT plan. I’m right there with ya. I wish you all the best and thank you for stopping by and commenting.
