What I’m reading Friday ~ Rescued Hearts by Hope Toler Dougherty is a story that captured my heart from the beginning. When the heroine, Mary Wade Kimball, tries to rescue a trapped kitten she is taken hostage for her efforts. (You know what they say about no good deed going unpunished.) And when the hero shows up, she thinks he’s in cahoots with her kidnappers.

Here’s the back cover copy:

Rescued Hearts, a book by Hope Toler Dougherty

Children’s clothing designer Mary Wade Kimball’s soft spot for animals leads to a hostage situation when she spots a briar- entangled kitten in front of an abandoned house. Beaten, bound, and gagged by the two thugs inside, Mary Wade loses hope for escape when a third villain returns with supplies.

Discovering the kidnapped woman ratchets the complications for undercover agent Brett Davis. Weighing the difference of ruining his three months’ investigation against the woman’s safety, Brett forsakes his mission and helps her escape, the bent-on-revenge brutes following behind.

When Mary Wade’s safety is threatened once more, Brett rescues her again. This time, her personal safety isn’t the only thing in jeopardy. Her heart is endangered as well.

You can purchase Hope Toler Dougherty’s Rescued Hearts at Amazon for the next few days for $2.99!

My Take:

I really enjoyed this story. Mary Wade is a gutsy heroine who wants to earn her parents’ approval, but instead of going into the ministry like they wanted and expected, she’s opened her own children’s clothing shop. She is struggling to make ends meet when she’s kidnapped doing a good deed.

Brett is absolutely swoon-worthy! An honorable man who loves his grandmother. The reader will love Gigi, his matchmaking, gun-toting grandmother, too, and when the kidnappers come after Mary Wade again, Brett hides her at his grandmother’s cabin.

Both Mary Wade and Brett are determined not to fall in love, but of course they do. This puts more pressure on Brett to keep her safe when the kidnappers trail them to the cabin. Parts of the story are light-hearted fun, but there are serious threads running through the story. I like the way Hope Toler Dougherty wove humor, love, and suspense together.

Sounds like an exciting story. I don’t want to offend anyone, but I don’t think I would have gotten in trouble for rescuing a kitten. I don’t hate animals, but I avoid touching them as much as possible because of allergy issues. If the bad guys came after me, it would have been for some other reason. But so you will know, I enjoy reading stories about animals.

Edward, I’m more of a dog person myself, but the rescuing-a-tangled-kitten story is a childhood memory of mine. My aunt rescued one that was dangling from a second story barn door with twine around its neck. I took that idea and fit it into Rescued Hearts. Thanks for reading the post!

Hope, I’m sure both the story in your book and the situation from your childhood would tug at my heart. I just automatically shy away from animals, except for stories in books. I have always loved reading about them, or watching shows on TV like Lassie and RinTin Tin. That’s close enough for me. I’ll have to be on the lookout for your book.

Hope Toler Doughtery is a friend, and I have read all of her books, and unbiasedly liked them all. But Rescued Hearts I liked a little more. I love suspense. Patricia that was a great review. I’ve read your Standoff Natchez Trace Park Rangers Book. I enjoyed it, ready for the next.

Thank you, Kelly! When I contacted Hope to let her know I’d reviewed Rescued Hearts, she reminded me we’d met at the Writer’s Police Academy in 2014! We had such fun at that conference!
