What I’m Reading Friday ~ Mackinac Island

Patricia Bradley What I'm Reading Friday 22 Comments

Oh, my goodness! I loved this story set on Mackinac Island in Michigan. I’ve never been there but this book made me want to visit the island in the summer. Cara Putman did such a good job putting me there that I almost feel like I’ve already visited it.

Putman also created two flawed characters who appealed to me. But first, here’s the back cover copy:

Join attorney Alanna Stone as she returns home despite her determination to never set foot on Mackinac Island again. Once again in close proximity to Jonathan Covington, her first love, she vows to protect her privacy and her heart from the man who still makes her pulse race. But when her worst fears are realized and history repeats itself—landing her in the midst of a murder investigation—Jonathan may be her only hope. Will they be able to lay aside the past and let God heal their hearts, or will reconciliation come too late?

My Take:

Alanna Stone has issues with a death from years ago that everyone on Mackinac Island believed was her brother’s fault. Both she and her brother fled the island, but now, eleven years later she is forced to return to help her parents. And when she fled, she left behind her one true love, and guess who’s the first person she sees when she steps on the island? You guessed it. Jonathan Covington, her long-ago boyfriend.

She fights the attraction she feels for him because she wants to leave the island as soon as she can hire someone to run her parents’ shop. And falling in love with him again would complicate her life. He fights the attraction because he fears she’ll leave him again. It’s a great story with an intriguing murder mystery.

You can purchase Mackinac Island by Cara Putman on Amazon, B&N

In the book, Allana ran from her problem. Do you think running from a problem makes it worse or are there times running is a good idea? Why to either question? If anyone wants to borrow Mackinac Island for 2 weeks on their Kindle (device or app), let me know. First come…

Sounds like an awesome read! Definitely on my TBR! Hmm, I think if your problem is a guy threatening you with violence, rape, etc, running is probably your best option. However, if the problem is a fire in the oven, maybe running is not smart?! (Throw baking powder over the fire, it puts it out. After we set the inside of the oven on fire the second time and called the fire brigade again, Mum asked what the powder they were using was, and it’s just a massive canister of baking powder!). But in general, problems don’t seem to go away unless you face them, I think. At least, most of them don’t.

Pat, you have a wonderful way of expanding my list of good authors. Being a former Michigander, I can certainly recommend a visit to Mackinac Island (just make sure your pronounce it right). I have just queued this book to #3 on my TBR list. Thank you!

Being from Michigan, we joke about “Mack-in-ack” but you are right. the true pronunciation is like the mainland city is spelled “Mackinaw”. It has been a long time since I’ve been on the Island, but it is beautiful.

I might want to take you up on your offer, but not now because I have a proofread job waiting plus four or five more books I need to read and review right away. Concerning run or don’t run, I remember hearing “It’s better to make a good run than a bad stand.” If you can resolve a matter satisfactorily by staying, don’t run. Otherwise, get out of Dodge.

Happy Friday, Pat! I’m excited to read Cara’s new series. Thank you for sharing.

If the problem is with someone abusive, it’s good to run away. Other problems need to be dealt with through other methods such as prayer.

This sounds like a good book. I think it is best to face our problems/situations rather than pretend they don’t exist. Then we can focus on a solution-whatever that may be. Otherwise, we (I) am consumed by it.

I have visited Mackinac Island for my son’s sixth grade trip. A long time ago, he is 47. I was privileged to be a chaperone. It was very memorable. I would love to go back. I have been wanting to read this for a while.
I think there are times to run and some times to take a stand. Pick your battles.
