What I’m Reading Friday ~ Critical Decision

Patricia Bradley What I'm Reading Friday 35 Comments

What would you do if someone kidnapped your husband and demanded that you murder your patient to get him back? That’s Dr. Kathy Hoover’s dilemma in Dr. Richard Mabry’s latest medical thriller. But first the back cover copy:

IT BEGAN WITH AN INNOCENT-APPEARING PACKAGE ON HER FRONT PORCH

The box contained a cell phone, which rang as soon as she opened the package. A voice that called Dr. Kathy Hoover by name said that her husband had been kidnapped. To get him back she would have to poison one of her patients.

At first, she didn’t believe that her husband had been taken from the conference he was attending, but soon she discovered that the kidnappers really had Darren. If she wanted to see him again, she had to give medication that would murder Kelton Rush, former Vice-President. What was she to do? How would she handle this critical decision?

Dr. Mabry was kind enough to send me an advance copy that I read as fast as I could turn the pages. This twisting story had me on the first page when Dr. Kathy Hoover was threatened with the death of her husband if she didn’t commit a murder. An unimaginable choice.

Mabry’s characters are well defined and the reader quickly comes to care about the couple. I especially loved the relationship between Kathy and her husband Darren. They were a solid couple and both were very resourceful against a formidable foe. It was hard to tell the good guys from the bad sometimes. This is a story I believe readers of suspense will not be able to put down.

You can pre-order Critical Decision at Amazon for $2.99. The price will go up after release!

Leave a comment telling me how you would handle the request Kathy received and I’ll enter you in a drawing for an Advanced Readers Copy of Critical Decision.

Hmm, what a horrible question!! I think probably get in touch with an ex-cop friend who hopefully would have contacts?! Going straight to the police would probably get your husband killed, but hopefully they wouldn’t know this person well enough to know his history… What should you do??

That’s quite the dilemma. I like Monique’s answer of working with the patient to fake his death. I enjoy Mabry’s Books. Can’t wait to read this one!

Questions like these are some of the most difficult, because they involve a moral choice that seems impossible to get right. First, as Christians we call upon God to guide us. Then, we may be led to one or more alternatives that will have the best possible outcome, and rely on God to do what is His will.

Many times we are faced with questions that seem to have only one answer. When we look closer, we may find that it is a false choice. There may be several choices that could break the dilemma.

I’ve not read anything by this author yet, so thank you, Pat, for cluing me in to Dr. Mabry.

Tim, you would really enjoy Richard Mabry’s books! He always has a moral dilemma in them. In Guarded Prognosis, the hero’s dad has pancreatic cancer and asks him to help him commit suicide if the pain gets too much. Talk about a moral dilemma! I love reading his books and eagerly await each release.

I agree pray first and see where God leads you. Tough situation definitely to be in. Sounds like a great book. I just recently heard about this author. I haven’t yet read any of his books.

Dr. Marby, will this be available for the B&N Nook as well. I see that several of your books are in that format, but I couldn’t find this one. Thanks.

I would be deep in prayer over this dilemma. I do know that I couldn’t murder someone, no matter how much I love someone else. I would have to try to work this out somehow, and definitely get law enforcement involved. That is quite the situation, definitely not one I would want to be facing. Sounds like a great book by Dr. Mabry!

That is quite a question. In my head, the right answer would be to let my sweet husband go, since it would ensure him going to Heaven; however, I am not sure that my heart would be able to make that choice. I can say that I am thankful that I won’t have to make that choice; however, it piques my interest to read the book. Dr. Mabry is a new author to me; I’m looking forward to the read!

I ran some of the ideas through my head that others have mentioned but the bottom line is that it would be a situation to pray about and see where that leads. Sounds like a great book. I still need to read Dr. Mabry’s books.

Pat, I read the ARC and enjoyed it as I have all of Richard Mabry’s other books. When I started reading this one, I wondered how Kathy or anyone else with strong moral convictions deal with such an awful dilemma. Other than praying and trusting God, I don’t know what other specific things I would do.

Wow, this book sounds very intriguing and like a very good page turner! All I can say that I’m glad I’m not in a situation like that, and pray that I never am. I think I would call the FBI and go from there.
