Truth in the Name by F. D. Adkins is this week’s Reader Friday. Here’s the opening sentence: “Dark shadows conceal every thought as exhaustion consumes me.”
This was a scary book to me because, unfortunately, I can see it happening. But first the photo and verse. A friend emailed this sunrise photo a few days ago she’d captured as she departed New Zealand. I don’t know which I’m more envious of — the photo or that she got to go to New Zealand!
Now onto Truth in the Name by F. D. Adkins. Here’s the cover and back copy:
If someone erased your memory, would you still know God?
President Denali’s war on crime has yielded unprecedented results, but its consequences are far from anticipated. As he wages war against every remaining criminal, he forms his own personal army—at a cost.
Ellie Hatcher finds herself chosen for a pivotal role in this clandestine sect shrouded in mystery. This forces her to leave behind everyone she knows and loves in less than 24 hours. Haunted by guilt and plagued by doubts, she must navigate a treacherous path where loyalty and self-discovery intertwine.
But something sinister is at play. As people around Ellie begin losing their memories and surrendering their ability to dissent, she embarks on a race against time to uncover the truth and save the world…and a man she finds herself unexpectedly falling for.
Diving deeper into the dark undercurrents of President Denali’s regime, Ellie discovers a shocking revelation—the president’s thirst for power knows no bounds. And in a world where memory is both a weapon and a weakness, she must question her role in the president’s grand scheme.
Ellie may have been chosen as a pawn by the president, but her presence in the training facility just might be a special assignment from God.
Truth in the Name is an enthralling blend of mystery, romance, and thrilling exploration. Through Ellie’s journey, readers are compelled to question the nature of memory, the consequences of power, and the enduring strength of faith. Fans of dystopian fiction and Christian thrillers are sure to be captivated by this thought-provoking tale that challenges the limits of human perception and the very essence of what it means to know God.
My Take:
This unique and intriguing political thriller set a few decades in the future grabbed my attention from the first chapter. Adkins wove a story laced with intrigue, love, a dash of humor and a monkey I adored. Faith abounds in the book. I found the characters well-defined and the plot gripping. With the strides made in technology, the possibility of reprogramming minds is believable.
I loved the clear vision the story gave of God without being preachy. Truth in the Name is a twisty novel that will keep your attention. This is the first book in the series and I have Book 2 on my Kindle( Truth in the Word). Book 3, Never Forget the Truth just released. You can find the series in KU or purchase on Amazon.
Okay Readers, what are you reading this week. Leave your answer and first line in the comments (or comment on Truth in the Name)

P.S. I’ll be on the road most of the day, so I may not answer comments until tonight! I’m keynoting a writing retreat in Jackson, MS…

I’ve read Truth in the Name. Fun book! Good review, Patricia. Oh yes, that monkey!
Author
I loved the monkey, Priscilla!
I echo DJ’s comment on the verse and photo. That is one of those “wish I was there” photos.
Pat, that book sounds really good. I have a friend who likes that kind of suspense, too, so I will point her to your review.
I’m nearly finished with reading “Ford”; The Montana Marshalls, book 3 in the series by Susan May Warren begins with, “If Ford didn’t get his head in the game, they were doomed. People were going to die. Probably him.”
And, I’m happy and thankful to report that the cataract surgery on my other eye last Wednesday was also an amazing success. Thank you all for your prayers.
Author
Tim, I’m so happy the cataract surgery is behind you and successful. I’m really thankful for my surgery many years ago since I no longer have to wear glasses! And thanks for pointing my review to your friend!
Tim, so glad the cataract surgeries went well. Are you enjoying reading the fine print now?
Actually, my single focus IOLs only correct from about 18 inches out. So, I see distant objects well, and have no problem reading my computer screen. Anything closer is out of focus. I did buy a pair of readers, but they’re a pain to carry around. The plan is to wait 6 weeks, then get prescription glasses to correct for close work, and astigmatism. Those will be progressives like my old glasses were. My ophthalmologist and I agreed this was the best solution for me. Glasses also have the benefit of UV filtering, and I’ll also get transition lenses to darken in the sunlight as I had before. I can read most written material and my phone if I hold them about 18 inches away.

Having an astigmatism makes it hard to avoid the reading glasses, Tim. But being able to see clearly again is awesome!
Oh, that photo! Words escape me. My first thought was how much it would be like a Balm in Gilead to some. It’s beautiful.
That first sentence, “If someone erased your memory, would you still know God?” Whoa! My immediate thought was intense grief, but then I remember His promise to never to leave me forsake me. No one will ever be able to steal what the Son of God has done for me. My mind may be gone, but His spirit in me is going to stand firm. But like you wrote, this is a scary book. However, I am intrigued and would like to read Truth in the Name.
I chose a line from the back blurb of The Dark Guest, by Sarah Hamaker. “Hearing his stories of the dangerous life behind the Iron Curtain in East Berlin makes her own life seem more tolerable.” You reviewed this book way back and also endorsed it. I’m only on chapter 6, but I am hooked!
Praying for your travels and keynote speech. Have fun!

Thanks for the prayers, Barbara! I am safely in Jackson and about to head over to the Bill Waller Craft Center. I loved Sarah’s book! I think you’d like all three of the Truth books!
I appreciated the book and author but didn’t like the monkey. I’m realizing more lately than I’m too serious and need to mend my ways. I’m glad you featured this book.

I am reading Love on a Whim by Suzanne Woods Fisher next. The chapter intro and first line:

Beautiful picture! Wow! I share your feelings about your friend getting to go to New Zealand. Was the friend on a cruise? The verse fits the scene.
I had not heard of F.D. Adkins until I read this post. The book sounds like a challenging read. With the shape our nation is in, stories like this become more believable all the time. Thanks for sharing about this book.
I am reading Robin Patchen’s next book, Finding You. Since it hasn’t released yet, I’ll share the first line of the blurb:
When antiquities professor Bryan Wright is tasked with discovering why a band of terrorists might target a museum in Munich, he teams up with the museum’s attractive exhibit designer to study their ancient artifacts.
Author
Thanks, Edward. My friend was on a cruise, and I don’t understand why she didn’t pack me in her suitcase!
This book sounds a little scary.
