True Crime Stories–Mystery Question

True Crime Stories; Is 55:8-9

True Crime stories are my Mystery Question this week. And I can tell you now, it’s really hard to make up a story that equals some of the ones I read.

But first the photo and verse. The best part of flying is taking photos out the window. I took this one when I flew to West Palm Beach in late March. Seeing God’s creation makes me wonder how anyone could deny Him!

Now for last week’s More Dumb Blotter Reports:  Three true reports from my local paper. One false. Can you guess which one?
  1. 11:32 a.m.: A pickup, possibly being driven by a dog with its head sticking out the driver’s side window, was weaving all over the road.
  2. 1:05 a.m.: A man called the police because his TV wasn’t working. When an officer arrived, he found the TV unplugged.
  3. Another goat story: 5:28: An officer got three goats back inside their fence and used crime scene tape to help secure the gap in the gate where they escaped.
  4. Southland crime: Man accused of mooning doorbell camera in Palos Heights.

And the answer is…#2.

Oh, and I have to come clean about the first goat answer I gave. It really happened…not the way I put it in the post, but sort of. We had a young couple renting a house we owned and she’d just had a baby. She thought the baby needed goat’s milk, so they bought a nanny goat. And tied it to the back porch.

It was making quite a mess there and my husband told the mother she just had to move the goat, that it couldn’t stay tied at the back door–too many flies, etc and she promised she would. When we drove by later that day, she’d moved the goat all right…You guessed it–to the front porch.

Now for this week’s Mystery Question: Here are four true crimes, well really three true crimes. I made up the fourth one. It’s up to you to figure out which three are true and which one isn’t.
  1. A former prison inmate thought what worked for Amazon would work for him. He collaborated with an accomplice on the inside to take orders and collect the money. Then he set up shop in the woods outside the prison and delivered the cigarettes, cellphones, and drugs by drone late at night, dropping the packages inside the prison. What sealed his fate was keeping the boxes the cell phones came in–ready evidence when the FBI searched his home.
  2. Between 2016 and 2019, a man convinced people he met in bars, restaurants, and adult entertainment establishments to invest in a motorized surfboard. He collected more than $350,000. What was the problem? The patent, purchase orders, and buyer contracts were falsified, and he never manufactured the boards. Instead, he spent the money on lavish living.
  3. A romance writer was charged with the murder of her husband of 27 years after paying $16,000 to keep more than a million dollars in life insurance policies active. Policies that she sold to herself. A search of her phone turned up a bookmarked site on their shared iTunes account entitled“10 Way to Cover Up a Murder.”
  4. A robber convinced his friend to drive the getaway car in a bank robbery by telling him the bank had hired him to test their security system. He told the friend he was getting $2,000 for the job and he’d split it with him. When they were caught a mile from the bank, the robber convinced police the friend was the mastermind of the operation.

Okay, Super Sleuths, which one did I make up? Leave your answer in the comments and I’ll enter you in a June drawing for a $10 gift card.

May’s winner is Caryl Kane.

This week's Mystery Question involves true crimes. Three really happened, but I made up one of them. Can you guess which one? Leave a comment and I'll enter you in a June drawing for a $10 gift card. Share on X

#3 caught my eye, and I’m too tired to think about it 😛 I have to be up again in 5 1/2 hours… *yawn*

Pat, I love that photo and Scripture to go with it. Beautiful!

I have to go with #1 this week. It seems pretty hard to believe the prison guards would not be aware of a drone dropping contraband inside the prison walls. And, how would the prisoner be free to walk over and pick the stuff up?

Hi, Tim. Good logic…but you know how that works with criminals, right? lol. But you may be right. We’ll see next week. I thought of those scripture verses when I took the photo a couple of months ago. Those verses and a few more. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

Oh my goodness I have no idea what to pick this week! So that’s where Mr. Random number comes in, and he says #4 🙂

I think the best part of flying over clouds like this is how they look like a mountain range. I love the verse you picked for your picture , it’s one of my favorite ones.

As much as I loved flying and looking down on the earth to search out landmarks, I always loved flying up above the clouds. I often recalled the Southern Gospel song, Stepping on the Clouds. The Scripture you used is definitely appropriate.

I’ve got to go with #3. From my time as an insurance agent over fifty years ago, I seem to recall that I could not sell myself an insurance policy. I had to get another agent to write policies on myself and on my wife. So how would a romance writer sell herself an insurance policy on her husband?

Good question, Edward…but remember we’re dealing with crooks…although you could be right. We’ll see next Tuesday. Good to ‘see’ you here! And I love seeing the clouds when I fly. Sometimes they look like cotton candy.

I hope #4, but they’re all “way out there!” It’s too bad criminals don’t use their brains for good

Firstly, I had a feeling the goat stories just had to be true. 😀 My mother-in-law keeps them, and goat people have a particular attitude and perspective about their animals that both amuses and intrigues me. For a while we rented out a small pasture to a man with a herd of goats, and trying to keep them in the pasture and out of my garden was a daily chore. While an officer and crime scene tape were never used, the man tried a variety of other items before we had to tell him it wasn’t working and he’d have to find somewhere else.

One of my favorite parts of flying was taking photos like that. Absolutely gorgeous.

    I’m guessing #1 this week.

Elizabeth, you are so right about goat people having a particular attitude and perspective. 🙂 And I’m glad you like my photo. We’ll see next week if it’s #1. Thanks for dropping by. I’ll be sending you an email about a book from my library.

While I’m thrilled about the prospect of a book, I do just want to double check there isn’t actually an Elizabeth McDonald who also comments. McDonald isn’t my last name, but if you just made it up to fill in the McD that’s just fine. 😉
