The Other Sister ~ Reader Friday

The Other Sister by Jessica R. Patch is this week’s Reader Friday. This week I’m doing something a little different in that I’m giving you the last three sentences of the first chapter: “I fear this will be my last entry. But I fear every entry might be my last. She’s tried to kill me before.”

And now I’ll leave you hanging to talk about the photo and verse. I’d hoped to get a shot of the full moon showing in the afternoon sky, but with the time change, I’m afraid I missed it. It was so pale and pretty against the brilliant blue sky a couple of days ago, but it wasn’t full. I’d hoped to get a shot before the clouds rolled back in, but it wasn’t to be so here it is at about three-quarters full. And this is a verse I ran across this week and it spoke to my heart.

And now for The Other Sister by Jessica R. Patch. Here’s the cover and back copy:’

The Other Sister by Jessica R. PatchShe thought she was the only one lying about her identity. Until she stepped into her sister’s life.

Charlotte Kane has always dreamed of a different life, one where she isn’t living paycheck to paycheck. An existence worlds away from the chaos of her own. Then her estranged mother dies, and Charlotte makes a stunning discovery—she has an identical twin who was given up for adoption.

Acelynn Benedict is polished, successful and seems to have everything Charlotte yearns for—a wealthy, doting family in Savannah, a handsome boyfriend, a great career. She’s just as surprised as Charlotte to learn she has a sister. But when tragedy hits and Charlotte is forced to assume Acelynn’s identity in a desperate moment, she uncovers something altogether darker…

No one in her sister’s life is quite who they seem to be. And every discovery leads Charlotte deeper into a web of deadly secrets. Charlotte may have wanted Acelynn’s life, yet now that she’s living it, she wants out. But if she reveals the truth about herself, it will mean returning to her old life—and she’s already a dead woman there.

My Take:

Oh, my goodness. The Other Sister caught my attention from the first page and kept me flipping pages until The End I didn’t see the twist at the end coming even though Jessica Patch left plenty of clues.

I really liked Charlotte Kane. She was trying to make it in a hard world, one where she had gotten no breaks until she discovered she had a twin sister. From the outside looking in, Acelynn Benedict had a perfect life. Then the unthinkable happened–Charlotte witnessed a loan shark murder Acelynn in a case of mistaken identity. Charlotte had no choice but to take her sister’s identity or the loan shark would come after her. Then she fears everyone will think she killed her sister to take her place. Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive–how well that saying fits Charlotte’s new life.

After she assumes Acelynn’s identity, one of her sister’s friends is murdered, and Acelynn (Charlotte) is a suspect. Plus, she’s falling for the detective investigating the murder.

This is a fast-paced, riveting story, one that you will not want to put down.

So, what are you reading this week? Leave a comment, and I’ll enter you in a March drawing for a beautiful pen handcrafted by Dr. Steve Hooley, a $60 value. You can see more of his work at his website. I’ll be giving away one of his pens each month on my Reader Friday Blog.

I’ll be at our MidSouth Christian Writers Conference today, so I may be a little slow answering comments, but I’ll try to do that before I go to bed. 🙂

Here’s a video from one of my favorite performers back in the day. He was a good actor, too.

Jonny Cash’s voice is so gorgeous that I tear up when I hear it. Love the moon photo and verse. Jessica Patch writes such gripping fiction, great review, Pat! I am reading a Biblical fiction novel about Joseph. It’s called Not by Sight by Elizabeth Jacobson, really good!

Pat, I just love moon shots. Looking at the moon always brings me calm, just like the verse you chose.

I have “The Other Sister” on preorder. Jessica never disappoints.

Aw, Johnny Cash is one of my favorites, too.

I see Colleen Coble gave you a shout out today in her newsletter. It turns out, I’m reading her latest book, “Ambush”, right now. The first line is: “What had possessed her to agree to this crazy idea?” What indeed. Paradise Alden is starting a new job as the vet of a wild animal preserve. She has a fear of big cats. Her boyfriend from her teen years runs the preserve with his mother. The preserve is near the town where her parents were brutally murdered when she was a kid. What could possibly go wrong? Colleen just continues to write amazing Christian suspense novels, and this new one is proof of that.

Well, I love those chilling three lines. Now I have to read that book.
I love Johnny Cash singing that song, too. Quite a moment in history. I’ve done volunteer prison Bible teaching in a women’s penitentiary. I can imagine what that time and song meant to his audience.

I will be looking forward to reading The Other Sister. Having lost my twin not long ago might make the twin thing hard but I will see once I start reading it. Right now reading Elijah a Man of Heroism and Humility by Charles Swindoll. Love the picture and verse.

I am still reading Sunrise Reef by Irene Hannon as we are spending Spring Break on a lake with kids and grands and getting in very little reading. We are trying to catch fish! Like Tim, I also saw you mentioned in Colleen’s newsletter. That’ fun. Enjoy your conference.

Jessica Patch is a great storyteller. I enjoy her books and I’ve been hearing about this one for a while now.
I’m reading How to Age Disgracefully by Clare Poole. A quirky group of septuagenarians getting into all kinds of shenanigans.

I was a big Johnny Cash fan as well. I still have two or three of his 33 1/3 LP albums.

The picture of the moon is definitely a good one even if it wasn’t exactly what you wanted. I thought you might have a picture of the lunar eclipse. I didn’t go outside to try to see it. It was cloudy before dark, so I didn’t figure there was any point. That’s a meaningful Scripture verse.

I am getting ready to read Finding Amanda by Robin Patchen.
    Fifteen Years Ago
Dr. Gabriel Sheppard eyed the girl in the doorway. She’d be perfect.
