Suppose I Hadn’t Listened ~ Reader Friday

Patricia Bradley Reader Friday 26 Comments

Suppose I Hadn’t Listened by Barbara D’Antoni Diggs is this week’s Reader Friday. Here are the first few lines: Israel 1973. For a week I braved the rush hour traffic between Baltimore, Maryland, and Washington D.C.. On the seventh night, I was asked a question. It never occurred to me my whole life would change if I answered, “Yes.”

But first the photo and verse. I chose this photo to go with Barbara’s cover–I took the sunrise from the window of a plane as I flew…I’ll be honest, I can’t remember where I was flying to. 😉 But a sunrise always reminds me of Psalm 100.

Now for Suppose I Hadn’t Listened by Barbara D’Antoni Diggs. Here’s the cover and back copy:

Suppose I hadn't listened.

Writing in her folksy style, Barbara D’Antoni Diggs shares 40 heart-warming, true stories from some of her most memorable mission experiences.

In Suppose I Hadn’t Listened you’ll read about her adventures living in a grass hut, the 2,000 chickens that came to church, and a picnic on the frozen Gulf of Finland.

You can anticipate both moments of laughter and tears, with unexpected surprises, as you read about Rasita, Oxana, Zhanna, a man named “Squirrel,” and other unique people she met along the way.

  • What outfit did the village chief wear to church that caused the Americans to gasp in disbelief, but won the ultimate honor and respect of his people?
  • When crossing the border into a communist-run territory, could they have disappeared forever?
  • Why, when on a tour to Moscow, did their not-stop train make an unscheduled stop the middle of the night? Outside the window were four feet of snow and an eight-foot-high barbed-wire fence. Were they being taken to a concentration camp, instead?

Barbara hopes you’ll enjoy reading about her favorite adventures and mishaps in Israel, Africa, Russia, Moldova and Hungary-and how God showed up and miracles happened.

For some lighthearted humor, be sure to read Stories Just for Fun near the end of the book.

My Take:

Reading Barbara D”Antoni Diggs’s stories was like being with her on her missionary trips. I felt like I knew the people she met along the way, and it’s like they became my friends, too. That’s what you get when you read Suppose I Hadn’t Listened.   Follow her as she travels to Moldova, the unrecognized state of Transnistria, Russia, and Israel. You’ll learn things about the people and places as they live each day. You’ll also learn about her heart for sharing Jesus in these countries. It’s a book whose characters will linger with you long after you read “The End.”

You can purchase Suppose I Hadn’t Listened on Amazon and I believe Barbara D’Antoni Diggs has a few copies that she’s offering at a special price for readers of this blog for $20 (includes shipping and handling). You can contact her at englishathome01 at gmail dot com and mention the blog post.

Cool photo, and I love the verse.
Whoa. “Suppose I Hadn’t Listened” looks like a must read to me. I can hardly wait to start it. Thank you!

“Someone had to stop her. She was going to ruin everything if left to do what she had planned.” This is the first line in the prologue to “Serial Burn” by Lynette Eason; Lake City Heroes #3. This book focuses on Deputy State Fire Marshal Jesslyn McCormick, and her friends from prior books in this great series.

Suppose I Hadn’t Listened is a book that is impacting me in several ways! These true life encounters with the miraculous works of God challenge me to become more bold in sharing my faith. These sketches not only inspire, but they are written in a direct, honest, and engaging style that holds my attention completely. I will never forget the people I met in this book— they are from every walk of life ( my favorites are Racita, Boris, Nadia, Boofer the monkey, Squirrel, and many others). This book made me laugh and cry, but most importantly, it shares Jesus. My advice is to share it with someone who needs to know His saving grace.

Beautiful sunrise and Scripture. It’s almost like you were eye level with the sun. That had to be amazing.

Thanks so much for featuring my book, Pat. I’m glad you enjoyed “meeting and knowing” my friends and felt like they had become your friends, too. There one plea was not to be forgotten when I returned home.

The book sounds interesting but the $25 paperback is a little steep for me right now. I’m reading Storm Warning by Elizabeth Goddard in ebook.

Congratulations Barbara! Your book sounds like a fascinating read! Thanks for the review Pat.
I am reading The Sparrow by Susan May Warren. MOSCOW, 1970 “Anyone looking at her might see a woman lost in the jazz, swaying to the sassy tones imported from America and emulated, often poorly, in a dingy underground nightclub on the south side of Moscow.”

    Happy weekend everyone!

What an interesting picture! The verse is so well suited with this picture.

The book sounds like a great one.

I finished a book two days ago and haven’t found the time to start my next one. It will be Susan Sleeman’s upcoming book. I’m looking forward to reading it.
