Reader Friday ~ Unintended Target

Patricia Bradley Reader Friday 30 Comments

I’ve been in a couple of anthologies with D. L. Wood, who is the author of Unintended Target, and I had bought her book. But I hadn’t gotten around to reading it. Well, that was a mistake. D. L. is a great writer and this book held my attention and left me wanting more…enough so, I’ve bought the second book in the series, Unintended Witness.

Here’s the backcover copy:

WINNER OF THE 2016 ILLUMINATION BOOK AWARDS GOLD MEDAL FOR CHRISTIAN EBOOK FICTION
Travel photojournalist Chloe McConnaughey thought she understood her brother Tate—a brilliant programmer willing to compromise anything to get ahead. She just didn’t know that included her.
When Tate dies unexpectedly, Chloe copes by taking an assignment in the Caribbean where she meets Jack, a charming Manhattan escapee who almost has her believing life could turn around. But the illusion is shattered when a series of bizarre incidents leaves them framed for murder and running from killers convinced that Chloe is the key to questions Tate left behind. Suddenly Jack’s timely entrance into her life seems more than coincidental, but with nowhere else to turn, Chloe must trust this man who is not only charming, but also dangerous, and much better at evading capture than he should be. Strained to the breaking point by a life consistently marked by tragedy, Chloe fights a sense of hopelessness, confronting the age-old question: if it’s not all random—if God does exist—why would He allow bad things to happen to good people?
Hunted from the tiny island of St. Gideon all the way to Miami, Chloe and Jack desperately search for the evidence that will prove their innocence and eliminate them as targets of the shadowy conspiracy that will stop at nothing to make its problems go away.

Here’s my take:

I had a hard time putting this book down. There are enough twists and turns to keep you glued to the page. Wood does a great job of blending suspense, romance, and God throughout the story. It’s a book romantic suspense readers will enjoy. Readers who like a lot of action will be happy as well. Wood is never preachy and her relationship with Jack kept me wondering what was going to happen when she discovered his faults…and like all good writers, Wood wove his faults in nicely. 🙂

I really think readers of romantic suspense will enjoy this series!

Leave a comment telling me if you ever buy a book and then something happens and it’s a while before you read it.

I have a very long backlog of ebooks to read on my Kindle app. I recently read this book and enjoyed it and ordered her next book in the series –which, unfortunately will remain unread until I get some of my other books read. I’m currently reading CrissCross by C.C. Warrens which is really great suspense with a touch of humor and lots of action.

I have this book, too! And it has been on my kindle for a while. I’m just waiting for a break in my busy schedule to fit it in.
I like to buy books especially on kindle. That way I can have two going at once. One on my kindle and one paperback.
I like to read a series all at once, so those first two may sit there on my shelf until I get the third one.

I’m not sure I’ve ever bought a book and delayed reading it. A friend shared about a thousand books with me on my Kindle and I have not yet read all of those, but that’s different. I haven’t read D.L. that I’m aware of, but your review has piqued my interest so I’ll do my best to correct that situation.

I think I still have a few books that I bought before 1990 that I have never read. They sounded good when I ordered them from a book club or picked them up in a store, but I didn’t have time right then to start reading. When I picked one up later, it had lost its appeal. I had a few that I bought in the 70s that I finally read in the late 90s.

Oh, my, Edward. I don’t have any waiting from that long ago. Mine probably date back a couple of years. At first I downloaded books without reading the “look inside” feature. I don’t do that any longer. I read that section before I commit to buying–even if it’s free.

Pat, I didn’t even mention the e-books. I bought my wife a Kindle three or four years ago and started downloading any free books I thought either one of us would like. These were mostly Christian fiction with a few non-fiction. She got so many books on her Kindle that it started telling her she had no space remaining whenever she tried to open a book.

That is the story of my life. I see a book that sounds good and if it is a good price, I buy it but it is a while before I read it. Thus, I have a huge TBR pile on my Kindle, Nook and a large amount of paperbacks. I have bought a book or maybe 2 by this author that I haven’t read.

Um…I buy books as I see them and as they look good…however, if a new one sounds better than an older one I have, the older one just waits. And then there are used book sales where I snatch up a bunch of books, knowing I won’t read most of them any time soon. I will say, I do still have some that I haven’t read that I’ve had since I was in high school (which is very close to 20 years!)

I’m always reading so I can’t imagine that happening to me.
    Mr. Wood’s book sounds intriguing.
Is it suitable for the church library?

Oh I do this all the time Patricia (ebooks especially)! Or I buy it and then decide it’s not what I’m in the mood to read at that time. I think it’s a readers dilemma for sure, lol!

Never heard of D.L Wood, but I love romantic suspesne so I bet I’d enjoy it. Might even discover a new writer to follow 🙂 Thanks for the heads up on this!
