Reader Friday – Things I Never Told You

Patricia Bradley Reader Friday 50 Comments

Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day, and I think we all celebrate the day even if we’re not Irish.

I left Suzy home with a sitter and will be celebrating at the Mid-South Christian Writers Conference this weekend, so I may be a little slow in responding to comments until Sunday. 🙂

Earlier this week I read Things I Never Told You by Beth Vogt and am so excited to tell you about this book. It’s considered women’s fiction and will release May 8, 2018. Here’s the back cover copy:

It’s been ten years since Payton Thatcher’s twin sister died in an accident, leaving the entire family to cope in whatever ways they could. No longer half of a pair, Payton reinvents herself as a partner in a successful party-planning business and is doing just fine—as long as she manages to hold her memories and her family at arm’s length.

But with her middle sister Jillian’s engagement, Payton’s party-planning skills are called into action. Which means working alongside her opinionated oldest sister, Johanna, who always seems ready for a fight. They can only hope that a wedding might be just the occasion to heal the resentment and jealousy that divides them . . . until a frightening diagnosis threatens Jillian’s plans and her future. As old wounds are reopened and the family faces the possibility of another tragedy, the Thatchers must decide if they will pull together or be driven further apart.

My review:

Beth Vogt’s books have long been some of my favorites with their heart-touching stories, and Things I Never Told You is no exception. She captured the fractured dynamics of three sisters unable to move forward after the death of their sister, Pepper. I hurt for Payton, the twin left behind dealing with survivor’s guilt, but also for Jillian and Johanna. I especially identified with Johanna and her need to control everything. 🙂 This is a story that will stay with you long after you finish it. You won’t be able to put it down once you start it.

You can pre-order at Amazon, B&N, and CBD.

Be sure to leave a comment and I’ll enter you in a drawing for a book from my library!  Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day. How do you celebrate the day? Do you cook a special meal? Or wear something green? Or…?

You did a great job reviewing Vogt’s best, most memorable book yet. I was privileged to read it, too, and know that these characters and hard-won insights will stay with readers a long time. This book belongs at the top of every reader’s list.

This sounds like a great book!
As far as celebrating St Patrick’s Day…it varies from year to year, sometimes we’ve had a special meal, sometimes I wear green…if I’m home all day I may or may not do anything special this year…

Pat: Thank you so much for sharing about Things I Never Told You. I’m counting down the days until it releases (52!) while I write book 2 in the series. I love delving into complicated relationships — and don’t all relationships have some complication or another?

I’m pretty much that way, too, Diane. But my daughter, Elisa, on the other hand, LOVES St Patrick’s Day. She used to ride in a parade every March 17! Thanks for stopping by.

I used to fix corned beef and cabbage but it’s too salty for our diet now. I guess I’ll just wear green! Have fun at your conference.

Yeah, Paula, I haven’t eaten corned beef in ages because of the salt. And I had a blast. Brandilyn is such a wonderful keynote speaker and teacher. And I came home with 5 of her books that I plan to give away once I r3ad them!

I sometimes wear green but this year we are cooking a special dessert. I believe it’s called Grasshopper Pie (it’s a minty chocolate dessert). I’ve never read that book before but it’s on my TBR.

Your review made me want to read Beth Vogt’s book. Have fun at your conference. I usually wear green. I used to make Irish Potatoes when my kids were little, but don’t do that any more. Maybe I will with a few of the grandchildren. I am part Irish on my mother’s side.

We don’t do anything special for the day other than try to remember to wear something green, if we remember what day it is. That harks back to childhood when other kids would pinch you if you didn’t have on something green. I never have known where that little practice originated.

I try to wear a little bit of green but that’s about the extent of celebrating the day. Tomorrow we have a wedding to attend so I have been trying to think of a way to incorporate green. It is not a color that I wear much. Have a fun weekend. I will have to check out the book…sounds good.

I have never “celebrated” – just tried to avoid being pinched. This year, though, I might have to do something more than wear green. Still working on that. Thanks for your review. Beth’s book sounds like a great one!

It sounds like a really good book. As far as St.Pats. Day goes I don’t celebrate any more. I used to be a Kindergarten teacher so I had a lot of fun celebrating in my class room. Used to cut out little green feet and tape them to the floor of my classroom before the kids came in. Always painted their noses green and of course made a lot St. Pats. Day art projects. It was a lot of fun!

There is some Irish on my paternal Grandmother’s side of the family… 🙂 I will wear green so I can avoid being pinched! I have an Aquacize class on Saturday mornings & after that I plan on enjoying a good book! 🙂

Wow–you caught my attention on Beth’s novel with “fractured dynamics.” Sounds like a great read. I love the cover!

Just made eggs and toasted Irish Soda Bread for breakfast. Leftover corn beef (from husband’s playing out at an Irish celebration gig last evening) for lunch. It’s way too cold here to attend the parade… hugging my wood stove instead.

You have made this book by Beth Vogt sound very interesting, at least a box one box of tissues. I have a set of identical twin boys, now men. And I can’t imagine how one would feel knowing the other is gone.
I hope you have a blast at the conference

Nothing special here for St. Patties day either! I do wished I knew how to cook corn beef though because I love it so much! 🙂

Beth’s book is already enjoyed by me, thanks for your prespective Patricia! I enjoy seeing what others say about the same books. Each one gets something different (or the same) out of them. I love how God works that out, don’t you?

Edward made me curious so I googled an answer. It has to do with being proud of being of being Irish by wearing green in honor of St. Patrick. If you were too afraid to wear green due to being persecuted, you got pinched !
