Reader Friday – Life on the Porcelain Edge

Patricia Bradley Reader Friday 29 Comments

This past week I read Life on the Porcelain Edge by C. E. Hilbert and loved it! Here’s the back cover copy:

Tessa Tarrington’s life is swirling out of control. No job. No apartment. Sick Dad…And she’s back in high school! Teaching at her Gibson’s Run alma mater would be tolerable, except she’s sharing purgatory with her mortal enemy, Ryland Jessup. But eight years post-high-school, and after tragedies she can barely understand, Ryland no longer fits her mental image of the over-sized bully he once was. In fact, much to her disgust, he’s finding his way into her heart. After the sudden death of his wife,

Ryland hung up his professional shoulder pads and picked up a whistle. Now he’s focused on coaching the high school football team and raising his daughter. The sudden return of his childhood crush, Tessa Tarrington, has reawakened long-ago feelings. But if God’s giving him a second chance to impress Tessa, the Man Upstairs has a funny way of showing it. Just when Tessa starts to lighten up, Ryland’s best friend returns. Will the always-irresistible Joey Taylor stifle any hope Ryland has to ignite the dream of a relationship with Tessa?

I loved the cover on this humorous book as well as I love this story about Tessa Tarrington’s life spiraling out of control. It had everything I like–humor, romance, a life lesson and wonderful characters. C.E. Hilbert has a gift for writing romcom. Tessa was a well-drawn character and a match for Ryland who has been in love with her since childhood. I enjoyed watching her journey as she returned home where she’d been known at T.T. after an unfortunate accident…It was easy to root for Ryland even though I really liked Joey and hope he gets his own book. 🙂

You can buy C. E.’s book on Amazon.

I like a cover that lets me know the kind of book on the inside. What about you? Does a cover make you pick up a book and read the first page? Leave your comment to be entered in a drawing for two books from my library!

AND NOW FOR THE WINNERS!

The winner of Sarah Young’s devotional is MS. Barb. The winners of a book from my library are Diane Nickerson and Linda Horin! I’ll be contacting you for mailing information. 🙂

Yes, covers do make me pick up a book and thumb through the first few pages. This book sounds great! Thanks for the introduction to a new-to-me author.

A cover draws my attention or turns me off to a book, but what really influences me to buy or check out a book is the synopsis on the back cover.

Hi Suzanne! I look at the cover mostly to tell the genre…and to make sure there isn’t a half-naked men and or woman on it. lol And the back cover copy will either make me look at the first page or put the book back on the shelf. But it’s the first page that sells me.

Yes, the cover can definitely cause me to further investigate the book. This one sounds like a fun book.

Oh yes, the cover does convince me to look the book over. I just finished Susan Meissner’s As Bright As Heaven…beautiful cover; great book! I love the cover on your upcoming book, too!

Yes, I usually pick a book by its cover. It’s silly I know but the cover draws me to a book. It makes me want to read the book!

Covers can either draw me in or push me away, particularly if I am unfamiliar with the author. When I know the author, the cover has slightly less impact on whether or not I will read the book. I will read every book I can get my hands on from some authors because I like what I have read previously.

I usually pick up a book based on the cover. I then skim the beginning of the book blurb on the back. (Usually it gives too much info for me, and I quickly lose interest.) I look the cover of “Life on the Porcelain Edge.” I have never heard of this author and the description sounds interesting, so I look forward to reading this book.

I am a self-proclaimed cover snob…lol! I have an affinity for a beautiful or eye-catching one. I will often choose books to read based on that and if the back cover blurb appeals to me. The other deciding factor, is a known author. Though I’m not opposed at all to trying new writers 🙂
Oftentimes anymore, it’s review books I pick up first!

I have a friend who has reworked her cover three times and finally has come up with something she likes. Covers are hard. And I’m so glad you try new authors, Trixi! Thanks for dropping by!

  9. Diane Nickerson

I am so excited to have won a book…thank you! I have been out of town and am rather behind on my emails so I apologize for the late reply. I look forward to hearing from you.
If I do not know the author, the cover does often help me in deciding whether or not to pick up a book. While the cover of this book obviously appeals to many, it is not one I would pick up without reading a review. I have learned to read reviews and even a blurb from the book even if I do not care for the cover. This one sounds like it is a fun read!
