Reader Friday – Her Place In Time

Patricia Bradley Reader Friday 42 Comments

This week I cleaned out my pottery room and chunked over 500 pounds of “stuff” and my back and legs are telling me about it! Why? do you ask? Well, I’m getting ready to remodel both of my bathrooms and hopefully get more room, and I needed a place to put more ‘stuff’. lol.

It’ll take about a month and since most of that time the house won’t have running water, that means I’ll be looking for a place to stay…hint, hint. 🙂 Actually, I’m staying with a friend and will probably drive them crazy.

Before I started all this work, I read Her Place in Time by Stephenia McGee and loved it! Isn’t that cover gorgeous! An interesting story behind the cover–during a book signing at Ironwood (not sure if that’s the name of the mansion) for another of her books, and the owner had a yellow dress that dated back to the Civil War. The owner acutally let Stephenia pin the dress on her and then took her picture. And that’s what the cover artist worked with. The yellow dress figures in the story, too!

Here’s the back cover copy:

Can love offer a new future…in the past?

A mysterious gown, unexpected courage, and a love that transcends time.

Nursing student Lena Lowery faces a grim diagnosis and a dangerous surgery. On the cusp of the life-changing procedure, Lena stays at the Rosswood Plantation Bed and Breakfast for one last weekend with her mother. There in an antique armoire, Lena discovers a Civil War-era gown that holds an unimaginable cure…a trip back in time to when the house served as a hospital.

Confederate Sergeant Caleb Dockery lost his brother, his eye, and nearly his life. Stuck in a makeshift infirmary, he’s counting the days until he can return to duty…and seek revenge. When a stranger appears, he suspects she’s a spy. If he can’t return to duty and find the revenge he craves for his brother’s death, he can serve his country by stopping this traitor. But her nursing skills are saving lives, and her courage and independence stirs his heart. When Lena’s safety is threatened, Caleb must strain the loyalties that bind him or risk losing her forever.

Caught between a future that holds no promises and a past that could offer new life, Lena must face an extraordinary decision. Should she return to her own time where her days are numbered? Or can she and Caleb find a love that stretches across time?

I loved this time travel novella by Stephenia McGee. The characters quickly drew me in, and I really liked Lena. Especially when she traveled back in time to 1864. McGee did a great job with the different time periods. And the way Lena handled being thrust into a place without air conditioning and indoor plumbing was hilarious at times.

I loved the way Lena jumped in and helped with her nursing skills to tend to the soldiers at the house. And Caleb, the wounded Confederate sergeant, is my idea of a true hero. As well as being swoon-worthy handsome.

As always Stephenia McGee has crafted an enjoyable read, one I won’t soon forget.

Leave a comment and I’ll enter you in a drawing for one of the books in my library. Her Place in Time is a time slip so tell me how you feel about time slip novels. (I have ulterior motives since I really want to write one. lol)

Now for the winner of Tuesday’s blog: Suzanne (suzyg514)!

Thank you all for stopping by!

I love time slip novels but I must confess I’ve only read a few and they were really well done. I need to read this book! If you write a time slip novel with suspense, I’d be the first in line to get the book!

I usually don’t like time slip novels, and then I went and wrote one earlier this year, go figure! (It’s trunked for now. I’ll pull it out in August to start revising with a fresh eye.) Thanks for reviewing this book. We have a house across the street from us that was built in 1838, and we live in Virginia, so now I really want to read it.

I am not, as a general rule, a fan of time slip novels. That being said, however, if it were a Christian suspense time slip written by an author I already really enjoy, I would most likely give it a try!

I’ve watched several interesting movies with this theme but I don’t remember reading any books in this genre. If well written, I’m not opposed to the idea.

You snagged my attention at “remodel” and complaining body parts 🙂 After a 30-year wait (no exaggeration) we’re finally updating our kitchen this August… oh, so many boxes to pack! Good luck with those bathrooms. I enjoy a well-done time-slip and am doing the research now for one I’m presently writing.

Oh, Elaine…you will be in my prayers! I did a major remodel of my kitchen/livingroom/den 5 years ago…it took me that long to get up the courage to do my bathrooms! lol. Seriously. No. It won’t be that bad. And you will so enjoy your new kitchen! Thanks for stopping by.

I like time slip novels if they are well done and not too far fetched. Good luck with your remodel!

Yes, Delores. At least 500 lbs–probably more like 700 since where I took it to dump charges $5 for 400 pounds and I paid $8.78. lol. I had a lot of ‘stuff’. Thanks for stopping by.

I’m not sure that I’ve ever read a time slip novel, but I do love dual time line novels. The historical element is always so fascinating.

It has many years since I have read a time slip and not many at that. I have read a few dual time novels in the last years by Rachel Hauck and Jaime Jo Wright and have enjoyed them.

Good luck on your remodeling! Thanks for telling us about this book…will check into it although time slip is not my favorite!

Hey, Pat. I’ve been in meetings today and just getting around to your post. I’m not sure how I feel about time slip novels – maybe a bit ambivalent. I can only say they aren’t my favorite but I might read one if the back cover copy sounds interesting enough.

I’ve heard that Rachel Hauck writes some time slips (time travel?) novels, though I’ve not read anything by her yet. I really can’t think of a time slip I have read, so I guess I can’t say whether I like them or not. This one sounds really good though, I’ll have to see if my library can get a copy of this one.

How fun that you will be getting two brand new remodeled bathrooms and stay with a friend to boot! I’ve watched shows where the people who bought a house lived in it while the remodel was going on….I think that’s craziness! All the noise and mess would get to me in less than a day 🙂

Thanks for the Reader Friday posts, they are always fun for me to read. You’ve helped me find some new books to add to my ever-growing list.

Rachel’s books are AWESOME! I’ll have to review one soon, Trixi. And when I remodeled half of my house–kitchen, den and living and dining room, I stayed in my house all but 4 days. And yes, it was noisy. lol. I’m so glad my reviews help you find new books and authors!
