Today’s book comes from Love Inspired Suspense from one of my favorite authors – fellow Mississippian Virginia Vaughn. Here’s the back cover copy:
She’ll risk everything to uncover her past
The first thrilling Covert Operatives tale
An infant is believed to have been murdered thirty years ago—but investigative journalist Dana Lang is convinced she’s that baby. Now someone’s willing to kill to stop her investigation. And only secretive deputy Quinn Dawson, whose grandfather may have faked Dana’s death to protect her, can keep her safe. But a killer’s dead set on burying the past—and them—for good.
My take:
This story drew me in with the first sentence: Someone was watching her…And then the attacks began.
Dana Lang is in West Bend, Missouri because she found papers after her mother unexpectedly passed away that revealed Dana had been adopted. She also found a newspaper article about a woman and baby in West Bend who had been murdered, and the baby in the picture looks like Dana’s baby pictures. She has come to the small town to discover the truth, but someone doesn’t want that truth to come out.
This was a good mystery, with many twists and turns. The hero, Quinn Dawson is hiding his own secrets from Dana, so he’s a little reluctant to get involved in her case…except she is so vulnerable and someone is trying to kill her. If you’re looking for an afternoon read and a mystery to puzzle out, Cold Case Cover-up is perfect!

I think you’ll really enjoy it, Sue! Thanks for dropping by.
It doesn’t really matter, but I do really like a good read set in a small town.
Author
So agree, Lisa! Thanks for stopping by!
I like small town settings. They are cozy and quaint and people know eachother.
Author
I like them for the same reasons, Paula. Thanks for stopping by!
I don’t care if it is small or large. I’ve read other books by Virginia Vaughn and enjoyed them.
Author
She’s a good writer, for sure, Christine. Thanks for stopping by.
I like small town settings because you can picture the town from the description, and you can get to know the individuals who live there. A small town makes for a cozier setting and more personal feel to the book.
Author
Cozier. That’s the word I was looking for in another comment, Suzzane! A lot of the time, a reader feels part of the small town. Thanks for stopping by,
It doesn’t matter to me as long as it’s well written. I guess it also depends on the author. Some authors capture the warmth of a small town very well.
Author
You’re right, Perianne. I love the way Melissa Tagg captures her small town in her romances. Thanks for stopping by.
This sounds like an interesting read. I enjoy either setting. I like variety so I’m more interested in the characters, the action, and the storyline than in a particular setting.
Author
I agree, Edward. It’s always the characters for me. Thanks for stopping by.
I prefer small town but, I have read many great books with big cities. This book sounds great and creepy… being watched!
Author
Yes, it was very interesting and creepy, Jessica. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
Now that’s an intriguing premise, and I also love the opening sentence!
Author
It was really interesting, Delores! I think you’ll like it. Thanks for stopping by.
If the book is Well written, the setting doesn’t matter very much to me. But being from a small town myself, I think I’m a little partial to small town settings.
Author
You know, Linda, I’m finding that readers seem to gravitate to small towns. Maybe it’s the sense of familiarity and safety that’s there. Thanks for stopping by.
I like small town settings for cozy mysteries and for certain other books but it really doesn’t matter. I think that it depends on the story line.
Author
I hope to get to work on my cozy mystery soon, Gloria! Do you think a modern-day paddlewheeler on the Mississippi would qualify for a small town? Thanks for stopping by!
You could make it work, I bet!
Author
Thanks, Gloria!
Another vote here for small town settings……and I love Virginia’s books.
Author
So agree, Jackie, so agree! Thanks for dropping in.

Lucy, it’s a great book. I think you’d really enjoy it. Thanks for stopping by!
I like both but I think I prefer small town settings. Everyone knows everyone in a small town.
Author
How well I know that everyone knows everyone else, Stella! LOL. Thanks for stopping by!
I love books set in a small town. I’d love to live in one myself. It doesn’t mean I won’t read a book in the city, but I get more excited to see it set in a small town or up in the mountains.
Author
I think a lot of readers are like you, Melissa! Thanks for stopping by!
I don’t think I’d better start this book before bedtime! 🙂 Sounds like an intriguing book!
Author
MS Barb, it is a very intriguing book! It kept me up past my bedtime! Thanks for stopping by!
Sounds like a great story!! Big city or small, it doesn’t really matter to me; they both have their own appeal.
Author
I agree, Diane. To me, it’s all about the characters and the story! Thanks for stopping by!
Big town or small, I like them all, especially if they pull you in at the beginning. This one sounds interesting. I’m looking forward to reading it.
Author
Yes, Jeanna, the opening paragraphs are what draw me in, too. Thanks for stopping by!
I may prefer small town stories but I enjoy both! I enjoy Virginia’s books

I enjoy the community feel of small town settings.
Author
It is a community, isn’t it, Caryl. And I think that’s what makes it special. Thanks for stopping by!
I,definitely like small towns now that I’m older. We have lived in many large cities but I’m glad we don’t any more.
Author
I grew up in Memphis, Faith, and I’m glad to not be living an hour and a half away! I can find most things I want in my small town and if I can’t, the larger city is nearby. Thanks for stopping by.
I’m going to sound a bit redundant, but I love Love Inspired! They are always my go-to book when I can’t choose what I want to read. 🙂 I don’t have this one and it sounds like I need it! LIS always gets my heart racing!
Author
