Reader Friday – Callum’s Compass

Patricia Bradley Reader Friday 33 Comments

I hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th of July! Mine was quiet…worked on getting my bedroom furniture painted…bathroom remodel should be finished in another week with photos to follow…and now for this week’s book:

Callum’s Compass is Sara L. Foust’s debut novel, and I can’t wait to read the follow-up, Camp Hope! Callum’s Compass is a great, page-turning romantic suspense novel. Here’s the back cover copy:

Kat Williams’s brother died in a gruesome accident in the mountains of East Tennessee. She blames herself.

Ryan Jenkins’s fiancée was murdered. He couldn’t protect her.
With the death of her brother, Kat believes she is unworthy of love from anyone—even God. When a good friend elicits a promise that she will stop living in the past, then leaves her clues to a real-life treasure hunt, Kat embarks on an adventure chock-full of danger. To find the treasure, Kat will have to survive wild animals—and even wilder men. Can she rely on Ryan, the handsome wildlife officer assigned to protect her … without falling in love?

Ryan swore off love when his fiancée was murdered, but feelings long buried rise to the surface around Kat. He volunteers to help with her treasure hunt, vowing to keep her safe. Together they venture deep into caves and tunnels … and even deeper into the depths of their unplumbed hearts.

My Take:

Callum’s Compass by Sara L. Faust is well-plotted and a page-turner. I quickly came to care about Kat Williams and Ryan Jenkins as they struggled with survivor’s guilt. Both felt responsible for their loved one’s death.

I really enjoyed the treasure hunt aspect of the story and was rooting for Kat when her family dismissed her interest in finding the treasure. Faust did a good job with the twist and turns of the story, keeping me up much too late! She did a great job of tying up all the loose ends. Callum’s Compass is more suspense than romance, but that’s the way I like my romantic suspense. You can purchase Callum’s Compass at Amazon.

Leave a comment and I’ll enter you in a drawing for a book from my library! Tell me if you prefer more romance or suspense in a romantic suspense.

The winner of June’s drawing is…gasp! Edward Arrington. Edward, Random.org must like you again. lol

I prefer more suspense. I dislike books that are romantic fluff with very little plot.

I’m not really picky but probably more suspense. I like to excercise my brain! Sorry I missed out on the book club and Callum.’s Compass. I’d like to read it eventually. I like treasure hunts, too. We used to make up scavenger hunts when we were at my grandparents for vacation.

Yes, I also prefer more suspense than romance in a romantic suspense. I also recently read Callum’s Compass and enjoyed it a lot.

Maybe this sounds like a cop-out, but I like a good balance of both romance & suspense in my stories. I know certain tense situations in a suspense book take precedence over the romance and that’s okay too, but I certainly want to see some romance even if it’s the undeniable attraction you can feel through the pages! If that makes sense 🙂

I’m a hopeless romantic so I don’t think I’d care for straight suspense. I feel the romance can temper the danger and conflict and help lighten the mood a bit.

Congrats Edward on your book win! Happy reading to you. Thanks Patricia for another book recommendation, I’ve never heard of this book so I must check it out now. And yay on your bathrooms almost being finished, I bet they are gonna be beautiful!
