Perilous Tides is this week’s Reader Friday. Here’s the first line: “You won’t see danger coming until it’s too late.”
But first the photo and verse. I took the photo at Roan Mountain, Tennessee, this week when I went on a spur-of-the-moment trip to Northeast Tennessee. It was such a wonderful time. The Appalachian Mountains are some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. If I’d been so inclined, I could’ve walked up the mountain and set foot on the Appalachian Trail, but it was a pretty good distance from where I was, and going uphill wasn’t what concerned me–it was coming down hill! One day I may venture up the mountain to the Trail! I thought the verse was perfect for the photo.
I wish I’d gotten a photo of the Blood Moon…maybe next year. Dottie McVay sent me one she’d taken, and here it is: Isn’t it gorgeous!
And I really liked that verse when I came across it this week. It gave me such peace.
Now for the cover and back copy:

High-Stakes Romantic Suspense from USA Today bestselling author Elizabeth Goddard
Three years after her mother’s suspicious death, forensic artist Jo Cattrel is in hiding, working at a storm-watching lodge along the Washington coast. When her father sends her a disturbing and cryptic message, Jo leaves the safety of the lodge to find him. But during the ferry crossing, Jo witnesses a murder–and becomes a target.
More surprising to Jo than being in danger is the identity of the person who steps in to protect her–none other than her ex, former Green Beret Cole Mercer. Now a private investigator, Cole has been looking into her mother’s death. If he can just uncover the truth, maybe Jo can end her self-imposed captivity and the two of them can pick up the pieces and build a future together.
As Cole and Jo search for answers, the past rushes in like a dangerous tide before the truth can be revealed.
My take:
I listened to Perilous Tides, Elizabeth Goddard, on my trip to the Appalachian Mountains and it really shortened the trip. The story starts off with a bang! like all of Goddard’s books and quickly draws you into the suspense. Perilous Tides kept me on the edge of my car seat all the way to East Tennessee. Wow! What a story with twists and turns every time I thought I had the killer identified.
Goddard created great characters that first showed up in the first book, Storm Warning. I had hoped Goddard would write Jo Cantrell and Cole Mercer’s story next, and she did not disappoint me. I love second-chance romances!
This is a story that lovers of romantic suspense will love!
You can find out more about Perilous Tides at Goddard’s website.
Okay, Readers what book are you into this week? Leave the first line or leave a comment, and I’ll enter you in a drawing for one of Steve Hooley’s fine pens! (value $60) Steve’s Hand-crafted pens are made from antique and historic wood dating back to the 1700s, connecting our past and our future. Check out my friend’s pens at his website. (Due to shipping costs, winner must have a US address.)
Saturday night, I went to the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, and listened to Bluegrass music and watched as kids of all ages danced to the lively tunes. While they didn’t play Uncle Penn, the feeling was the same. Here is a favorite by Ricky Scaggs and Bill Monroe. I hope you enjoy:

That sounds like an interesting book, Barbara!
I am reading Braving the Valley by Rebecca Hartt.
Author
I haven’t read Rebecca Hartt’s book, Sharon. It sounds interesting.
Beautiful moon picture, Pat. Perilous Tides sounds exciting. I am reading King of the Lake by Kira McCullough. It’s a short story collection with Christian characters and a literary bent. I’m loving it! The first line: You enter the Lake by the rocks, or not at all.
Author
Hi, Priscilla! Dottie McVay took the beautiful moonshot. I’ll have to check out the book by Kira McCullough!
I just finished Written in Secret and am starting a biography of Golda Meir.
Your verse didn’t show up here, at least not on my screen and I tried twice.
Thanks for the songs, too. Have a great week!
Author
I really enjoyed Written in Secret, Delores!
Great photo, Dottie!!
Perilous Tides was a great read. Elizabeth knows how to weave a good mystery and throw a good curve at the end.
I’m currently reading “The Women of Oak Ridge” by Michelle Schocklee. The opening line is “The secret changes everything.” This novel is about the work done in the later years of WWII at the secret city of Oak Ridge, TN. A large amount of that work was done by women, and this historic novel follows the life of Maebelle Willett, who worked on the “Reservation” for the Manhattan Project, and her niece, Laurel who visits her aunt in 1979 to gather information on how the Project affected the people who worked there during the war for her PhD thesis. It’s an interesting story just for that reason. And then the story takes a big twist with the disappearance of one of the characters. The chapters alternate between Maebelle during the War and Laurel and Mae in 1979. Beautiful writing!
Tim, The Women of Oak Ridge sounds like an interesting novel. Hmmmm and about an hour or so away from me. I may have to check this out. Thanks for sharing the info.
It is very well written, and about a subject and time that is distant yet relevant. I’m learning some amazing things. I did not know that Oak Ridge as a community did not exist before it was explicitly built for the Manhattan Project. Everything was so secret and compartmentalized that most of the workers, including some of the engineers did not know what the project’s purpose, to say nothing about the inherent dangers involved. I remember reading elsewhere that now famous physicist Richard Feynman was sent there from Los Alamos to ensure that the “product” containers were never conveyed or stored too close to each other. There were many unknowns.

I did know that Oak Ridge was built specifically for the workers on the project, Tim. 🙂
Author
I haven’t been to Oak Ridge, but should make it there before too long, Tim. And I agree with your assessment of Elizabeth Goddard’s writing!
Love those clouds! Did you see the Star Trek space ship, the U.S.S. Enterprise in the upper left hand corner along with that floating tooth directly underneath? lol
Psalm 32:7 is one of my favs. Years ago, there was a beautiful Scripture song of that verse. I believe it was related to The Hiding Place.
Oh Perilous Tides is another good one! I read it about two weeks ago. I’ll bet listening to it was delightful!
“Even though Claire and I spent months researching, planning, and organizing every detail of our trip to Italy, from the moment we arrived in Venice, I wondered if we’d made a big mistake.” This is the first line by Gelato at the Villa, by Robin Jones Gunn.
Author
I’ll have to back and look at the clouds again, Barbara. 😉 Robin Jones Gunn’s books sound intriguing!
Pat, I didn’t notice the Enterprise and the teeth the first time around! 😉 but did see them this morning.
Author
Well, I’ll just have to go see. 🙂
Book looks like an incredible read would love to read in print format so I can review it.
I’m reading Colorado K-9 by Kathleen Donnelly and the first line is: The Porch was secure. Or so she told herself. Clouds drifted over the full moon, like curtainswith a face peeking through.
Author
I love Kathleen Donnelly’s books, Crystal!
The Northeast is the prettiest part of our beloved Tennessee. What an inspiring verse and picture! Thank you for all you share,

still trying to read through “The Heart’s Bidding” by Kelly Irvin! (so many interruptions w/ grandchildren & life!)
Author
How well I know about interruptions, Barbie D! And Kelly’s books are always so good!

This is a book on my TBR list. I always enjoy Elizabeth’s books.
Luna Rosati could disappear into any crowd, any city, any life. Except this one.
Girl Lost by Kate Angelo
Author
I have to get to Kate Angelo’s book soon. It sounds so intriguing, Gloria!
I’ve read and reviewed Perilous Tides and it is well worth the time.
I just started Holly and Nick Hate Christmas by Betsy St Amant.
“Christmas was so overrated. Nonetheless, I found myself standing in line for a coveted red cup of coffee, determined to drown my sorrows in white mocha syrup and ignore the fact that I probably shouldn’t be paying six dollars for a drink when I’d just lost my job.”
Author
What an intriguing first line, Gail. I need to get that one!
Hi Linda, actually I just finished reading a book and so my next one which I will start either tonight or tomorrow is Perilous Tides, it sounds like a great read , the book cover is beautiful and looks intriguing!! Have a great weekend.
Author
It’s a great book, Alicia!
Both photos are beautful! Only God!
I am waiting for my library to obtain Perilous Tides and am looking forward to reading it. I do enjoy Elizabeth’s books.
I just finished Where Secrets Lie by Colleen Coble and Rick Acker. Great read!
Wishing each of you a blessed weekend!
Author
Where Secrets Lie is on my audible account waiting for me to get to it, Mary G! I’m glad you enjoyed our photos, too.
“Foster Quinn stood at the edge of the fifty-meter pool with his toes wrapped around the bullnose tile coping.” – from Silent Horizons by Chad Robichaux with Jack Stewart. I was browsing our local Christian bookstore and spotted this book. Military fiction is one of my favorite genres, especially Christian military fiction, so of course I had to read the blurb. Because print is getting harder for me to read, most of my books are e-books, but I bought this one regardless that it was a printed book. I struggled reading it, but I just finished and can’t wait for the next one in the series.
Author
Linda, I’ll have to check that one out!
I enjoy Elizabeth Goddard’s books but haven’t read this one yet. I’m currently reading A Sea View Christmas by Julie Klassen. I’d normally wait till closer to Christmas to read it but my daughter wants to borrow it when I’m finished.
Author
Totally understand, Pam! I can read a Christmas story anytime, though. 😉
Beautiful picture of Roan Mountain. My family and I went to Elizabethton, TN, to visit some friends from college days. Someone else can probably tell me the date because we heard the news about the death of Elvis about an hour from our home as we were heading to TN. My college friend took me hiking up Roan Mountain. I have no idea how close we were to the Appalachian Trail on our hike. I just remember him telling me about the brown mountain lights that could be seen at night.
I’m planning to read Perilous Tides, but right now, Storm Warning is next on my list. Currently, I am reading Two Seconds Too Late by Dani Pettrey. I think someone else has already shared the first line previously, but I’ll do it again.
THWACK. The bullet collided with the car at Riley’s back a moment before a retort echoed in the stale air of the junkyard.
Author
I loved Two Seconds Too Late by Dani Pettrey, Edward! and I think you’ll enjoy Storm Warning and Perilous Tides.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Enjoy your weekend!
Author
You, too, Caryl!
Beautiful photos. I’m currently reading It’s All Relative by Rachel Magee.

I haven’t read anything by Rachel Magee…I’ll have to check her out, Megan!
I read Goddard’s Stormy Haven book and the storm watching lodge makes for an intriguing setting! I was blessed to win a Hooley Legacy Pen! What an interesting and unique use of historic wood.
Author
I love Steve Hooley’s pens, Sally Jo. Hope you enjoy yours. 🙂
