On The Edge of Trust ~ Reader Friday

Patricia Bradley Reader Friday 41 Comments

On The Edge of Trust, my latest release, is this week’s Reader Friday. Here’s the first line:  “A ding from her phone jerked Jenny Tremont from a sound sleep on her den sofa.”

But first, thank you all for reading my blog and my books! Without you, I would have no reason write!

Now for the verse and photo. I took the photo last weekend when I drove up to Shady Valley, Tennessee. It was a beautiful drive, one I hope to repeat next spring when everything turns green! The verse in Numbers has long been a favorite, and it seemed to fit the picture.

This week, I’m approaching Reader Friday a bit differently by discussing some challenges I faced while writing On The Edge of Trust. The hero in the story is Scott Sinclair, and I’d long wanted to redeem him. When we last saw Scott, he was a recovering alcoholic and a new Christian.

Did you ever wonder why authors put their characters through so much? Think about it–who wants to read about a character who has it all and is living worry-free? So of course, I had to put Scott’s job as an FBI undercover cop in jeopardy. And I had to pair him with Tori Mitchell, who vowed never to date a recovering alcoholic after she blamed her alcoholic father for her mother’s death. Can you see the conflict that might cause?

The greatest challenge writing On the Edge of Trust arose when I lost two beloved friends, the first just 20,000 words into the story. Meanwhile, deadlines didn’t pause for my grief to settle, but because I’d lost six weeks during the friend’s illness, I did get an extension. Still, it was difficult to get back into the story, but I got it sent in on the day it was due. Of course, it had more holes than Swiss cheese!

But that’s where outstanding editors come in, and I have the best. We whipped the manuscript into shape, and I’m very pleased with the finished book!

I hope if you read On the Edge of Trust, you will enjoy it. Pretty sure you can get it from your library or check out my Books tab for links. And until Monday night, Baker Bookhouse still has it for 40% off and free shipping!

Okay Readers, what book are you into this week? Leave the first line or just say hi in the comments, and I’ll enter you in a drawing for one of Steve Hooley’s fine pens! (value $60) Steve’s Hand-crafted pens are made from antique and historic wood dating back to the 1700s. Check out my friend’s pens at his website. (Due to shipping costs, winner must have a US address.) You can see his other pens here.

Their pursuit of justice brings them together until they become the targets…

Scott Sinclair is a decorated FBI agent until a gunshot wound threatens the future of his career. When crime podcaster Tori Mitchell’s nephew is accused of murder, nothing can stop her from clearing his name. Tori and Scott’s pursuits bring them together, but once they become targets, they must now outsmart a killer.

Now for this week’s song. This may be my favorite. 😉

I will have to say On the Edge of Trust was fantastic. I read it twice and loved it both times. Book six! Book six!! 🙂

Yep, you definitely should see our mountains in the spring. It’s truly a beautiful area. I’ll admit, I did have to look closely at the pic to make sure there were no bears hiding. The pic of the bear that came to the writier’s retreat a few months was. . . unbelievable and yet, there he was! Whoa!

“I’m sure you’ll agree, my dear, if you take a moment to ponder the matter, that it might be for the best if we put all plans for our upcoming wedding on
hold. . .perhaps I definitely.” This is the first line of a Lesson in Propriety by Jen Turano. Oh boy, fun reading ahead with her sense of humor!

I love that photo and verse. At first I thought I saw a house in the trees. Nope, just the pattern of the leaves. See Barbara, you got me started looking for things in the clouds. Now, I seeing things in the trees. What will be next? 🙂

I just learned that some friends who live here most of the year, have bought a fixer-upper in Tennessee which they will be checking out soon.

I’m currently reading “Wasted” by Jerusha Agen. The first two lines are “‘What do you want?’ Victoria Weston’s smile slipped away at Jamica Trent’s unfriendly greeting.” What do you do when you are accused of murder and the investigating detective ignores evidence because he’s convinced you did it? Great book!

Ha hah, Tim way to go. May you see lots of things in clouds, trees, land and sea!
Glad you’re reading Wasted. I’m waiting on my copy!

Looking forward to On the Edge of Trust.

Beautiful photo and wonderful verse! I, too, love the song He Touched Me by the GVB!

That’s a special song for my wife and me. I don’t remember when we first heard it (I’m sure it wasn’t 1963). I don’t think we had heard of the Gaithers until 1972 right after we went through a very difficult experience. I went in to speak with one of my college professors about missing his class. When I shared what was going on, he handed me a cassette tape with several Gaither songs on it including He Touched Me. When I was in class or at work, my wife listened to that cassette over and over. The song has meant a lot through the years. Thanks for sharing it.

On the Edge of Trust is a great story. I got caught up in it and had trouble putting it down.

I still haven’t gotten to the book I intended to start last weekend. After that one, I plan to read The Doctor’s Lady by Jody Hedlund. The opening lines –
    February 1836, Angelica, New York
    Indians!”
The sharp call from the back of the sanctuary jolted Priscilla White.

This comes from Missing At Christmas by Deena Alexander: Lexi squinted into the rearview mirror–again. If she wasn’t mistaken, the same car still hung back, its high beams reflecting from her mirror bright enough to leave black spots dancing in front of her eyes.
