Labyrinth of Lies by Irene Hannon is this week’s Reader Friday post. Oh, my goodness! This book kept me up reading until 1:30 earlier this week…not once, but twice. More on that later.
But first the photo and scripture. I couldn’t resist one more fall photo of the beautiful trees around here. This one was taken at Corinth’s oldest cemetery–City Cemetery. Sometimes we have actors portraying the early settlers in Corinth, originally known as The Crossroads because of all the railroads passing through. We are about to open a train museum and when we do, I’ll do a post about it. I thought my paraphrase of Isaiah 40:8 fit very well.
Now for Labyrinth of Lies by Irene Hannon. Here’s the opening line: They wanted her to take on another undercover gig? No way. Not happening.
But of course, the heroine, Cate Reilly, did. Hannon certainly knows how to create tension and not just suspense. She skillfully weaves romance into the story that leaves you wanting Cate and Zeke Sloan to get together. Although this is the second book in the series, it is a stand-alone and you don’t have to read the first one to know what’s going on.
Cate has sworn off undercover work after one case (she wanted to see what the allure was that caused the man (Zeke) she loved to leave her for an opportunity to go undercover in the DEA.) But, she was the only St. Louis County deputy who could pull off the undercover job of becoming a student at a posh boarding school to find out what happened to one of the students. Little did she know this case would throw her and Zeke together.
Zeke is at the boarding school posing as a Spanish teacher so he can take down the cartel that was using the school as a drop-off point for drugs. This story has many twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. You can find buy links here.
I think romantic suspense readers will enjoy Labyrinth of Lies! Leave a comment, and I’ll enter you in a December drawing for a book from my library!
I’ll also enter you in a drawing for a 2022 calendar that I made from the memes appearing at the head of my blogs. That winner will be announced on December 17…my last blog for 2021. With everyone so busy with Christmas, I plan to take off until after the first of the year.
November’s winner of a book from my library is…MS Barb (Dawson)!

Beautiful photo to match the verse.
I read “Labyrinth of Lies” a short time ago. It was yet another great book from Ms Hannon. It was one of her early books that got me started on romantic/Christian suspense. Count on her for a great read. The only part I thought was a stretch was that Cate was 33 years old, and was undercover as a 17 year old teen. Could that work in real life? Even Cate expresses doubts she could do it.
“Robyn Lowry couldn’t sleep, frowning when she heard a scraping noise against the side of the safe house.” is the first line from “Hiding His Holiday Witness” by Laura Scott. Laura is another great author.

Tim, I can see how some might think it a stretch, but…when I was in my 30s, I could easily pass for a senior in high school when I wore my hair in a ponytail and didn’t wear makeup. lol. The book you’re reading sounds great!
It sounds like it is full of lots of twists and turns–great!

It is very good, Delores!
Any of Irene Hannon’s books that I have read were very hard to put down!

Thanks, Terri. I love taking photos…
Love your pic/scripture! And I DO love Irene’s books….this one is definitely on my wish list.
Author
Thanks, Jackie. I hate that it’s getting past the time when anyone wants to see fall photos. lol. The trees are so colorful and right now everything is just sort of…winter. lol
I love a good suspense novel, even though my body does not love me staying up late to finish them! Labyrinth of Lies, sounds like another late nighter!

Same here, Bethany, but night is the only time I have to read and sometimes I have to read ‘just one more chapter’ and then I end up not going to sleep until 1!
The verse fits the picture perfectly. Clever photo with the wall in the background and the leaves with their split colors.
Labyrinth of Lies sounds like quite the adventure! I have it, but no time to read it yet..

You might not want to start it on a night where you have to get up early the next day, Barbara. lol I love our old City Cemetery. And hate that we didn’t get to have the “Tour” with the residents this year.
Thanks for the tip on not starting the book with an early morning ahead. Sorry, you didn’t get your cemetery tour this year, Pat. When I was a young teen, I used to walk over to the local cemetery all the time. I would take a sandwich and eat with the “residents.” I think I loved that it was so quiet in there. I could walk all around roads, talk to myself and sing to my heart’s desire. I hope I wasn’t being disrespectful.
Author
I don’t think you were being disrespectful. My sister and I took a picnic lunch to my nephew’s graveside earlier this fall and “had lunch with him.” It was a sweet time as we remembered different things about him.
Aww, thanks for sharing that. What a precious time for you and your sister.

It’s a great read, Natalya! Have a great weekend!
I enjoyed Labyrinth of Lies. Her suspense stories are great. I read Amy Lillard’s new cozy, A Murder Like No Author, last week. Her setting is a town of Sugar Springs (fictitious?) near Corinth and she mentioned the reenactments there in Corinth. I thought about you.
Author
I know Amy, Gloria, although I haven’t seen her in several years. She moved away…and as far as I know, there is no place named Sugar Springs around here. I’m going now to get her book!
I have this one sitting in my TBR pile. I really love her books, they’re always so good.
Beautiful photo! Thanks for an opportunity to win one of Irene Hannon’s books! 🙂

Very nice picture! I like it! I agree that the paraphrased verse goes well with it.
I started reading a book earlier today and quickly realized I had already read it. I guess that’s what happens when you read as much as I do and have so many other things going on in your life. The funny part is that I recently checked out the third book in the series at the library and then decided I should read books one and two first. I put the first book down and started reading the second book, which I had not read previously. The book is A Man with a Past by Mary Connealy. The first line: When a man grows up in wild country, huntin’ food, eyes wide open for trouble, he knows when he’s being watched.
Author
Mary is such a good writer and that opening line is a grabber, Edward! I will have to check it out!
Looks and sounds great. Especially love the verse. Blessings

Thank you for sharing all your photos! They are always beautiful and you have the gift of pairing them with the perfect Scriptures. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Irene Hannon’s books.
Author
Thank you, Mary. I truly love finding the right scripture for the photo.
Love all your photos—you definitely have a gift in addition to writing.
As for Labyrinth of Lies by Irene Hannon, what a shock it must be for Cate to go undercover and find Zeke there, also undercover. This sounds like a great roller-coaster-ride of a read.
Author
Thanks, Roxanne! It was a roller-coaster of a read!
