Kidnapped in Alaska by Beth Carpenter is this week’s Reader Friday. Here’s the first line: “Keira, you can’t catch a fish if you don’t put your line in the water.”
But first the photo and verse. I captured the photo in Ocala, Florida, while taking two beautiful border collies for a run. The one on the left, Maddie, is ADHD, like me. Evie is calm and collected. 🙂 Anyway, when I saw the clouds, I snapped the photo, wondering what Barbara Diggs would see in them… And the verse just seemed to fit.
Now for Kidnapped in Alaska by Beth Carpenter. Here’s the cover and back copy:
My Take:
I loved this story. It had me at Alaska! I bought it back in February when it first came out, but somehow it got lost in my Kindle. I’m so glad it popped up again!
Once I started reading it, I couldn’t put the book. Oh, my goodness, Zeke Soto was one swoon-worthy hero. And I loved the never-say-quit attitude of Alexis. Keira, Alexis’ niece, was amazing as well. At the beginning, she was the typical ‘tweener–attached to her phone, but I loved the way her attitude changed over the course of the book. And the mystery and suspense–the twists and turns will keep readers flipping pages to see who the real bad guy is!
Beth Carpemter did a great job creating a beautiful Alaskan setting, complete with white-water rafting. I felt I was on the river with Alexis, Zeke, and Keira. Her characters were tough and ready to take on trouble–both Alexis and Zeke had a never-quit attitude. Watching their romance develop was so much fun. This is a great book for readers of romantic suspense!
You can purchase it here.
Okay Readers, what book are you into this week? Leave the first line or leave a comment, and I’ll enter you in a drawing for one of Steve H
ooley’s fine pens! (value $60) Steve’s Hand-crafted pens are made from antique and historic wood dating back to the 1700s. Check out my friend’s pens at his website. (Because of shipping costs, the winner must have a US address.) You can see his other pens here.
OH! I ALMOST FORGOT: SEPTEMBER’S WINNER IS NATAYLA!
I want to let you know about a sale that will be running for Justice Delivered as part of a Kobo Canadian Thanksgiving Sale. It starts 10/9/25 and runs for 6 days until 10/15/25. I figure if it’s on Kobo, it’ll be on all the major outlets! Back in early 2016, I knew almost nothing about human trafficking. Then an Advocate for Freedom volunteer came to our church and showed a PowerPoint presentation about it. I was stunned, and I knew I had to write a story about it to inform readers of what I’d learned.
Justice Delivered was that story. Be sure to catch the sale because it won’t last long!
Today’s song comes from my TV-watching days in the late ’50s. The next few weeks may focus on some of those songs. Goodness, how this song brings back memories.

I can certainly imagine an eagle coming to soar through that sky. I think I see a dog in one of those clouds.
I love books set in Alaska. Sounds like a good read. Thanks for the Johnny Cash blast from the past. I love his singing. That one is from my middle school days, and I remember some parents were not happy with the rebel part…Might give their kids ideas 🙂
I’m currently reading Kate Angelo’s “Girl Lost”. The first line is “Luna Rosati could disappear into any crowd, any city, any life. Except this one. This Life.” Plenty of action in this book.
Author
Tim, I must get Girl Lost! I’ve been so busy, I haven’t had time to order it. lol
Going to be starting Riches Beyond Measure by Mary Connealy very soon.

I’ve been meaning to get one of Mary’s books…so many books and so little time!
I love the photo, the song, and this week I’m into non-fiction – Sensational: The Hidden History of America’s “Girl Stunt Reporters” by Kim Todd. “In late November, 1888, a young woman threaded her way through the grit-filled streets of Chicago’s downtown, skirting horse-drawn cabs and wagons teetering under sacks of grain.”
Author
Your book sounds almost like fiction, Delores! Intriuging.
I’m reading the Souls of Lost Lake by Jamie Jo Wright.

Glad you enjoy the photos, verse and music, Lisa Dawn!
Maddie and Evie are adorable! Kidnapped in Alaska sounds exciting. I love it when an author is able to transport the reader to the setting. I am reading Blue Sunflower. It’s a collection of Christian poetry. The first line: I want to be the whisper in the dawn
Author
I love that first line, Priscilla! And Beth Carpenter certainly transported me to Alaska!

Ha! As soon as I saw the photo, my brain was on the hunt. Oh my goodness so many things to see and imagine: 3 hearts, 3 chickens, a tea pot, a butterfly, a genie lamp, a star, a tea kettle, a potato, and a pair of big lips. Then I scrolled down and saw your comment wondering what I’d see. Now the question is, can you find them, too? 🙂
That verse—a true lifeline for me!!!
Your review really had me wanting a trip to Alaska to solve a mystery and go white water rafting again! Great review of Kidnapped in Alaska, Pat.
“What would a French glamour girl wear to stash weapons in the dead of winter besides a haute couture gown?” This is the first line from The French Kitchen by Kristy Cambron.

I must get started on that book, Mary G!
That first line reminded me of when my grandad took my then 3 yr old brother fishing. Grandad threw his rod back to cast and the hook got caught in the tree. My brother replied, “you can’t catch no fishes in them trees!”
And the scripture is my own son’s favorite verse.
Author
I’ve done what your granddad did many times, Gail! lol
It sounds like a really interesting book. Thank you for sharing.
Author
You’re welcome, Diana!
I’m not currently reading anything but hope to get back into it soon.
Author
I’m lost when I don’t have a book to read, Kelly! Hopefully, you get back soon!
Beautiful picture and great verse. That has been one of my favorite verses for many years. Nothing against Johnny Cash because I’ve always liked his music. However, I would suggest this song because it is based on the Bible verse you shared: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCNoFkzhT9o&list=RDaCNoFkzhT9o&start_radio=1.
Kidnapped in Alaska sounds interesting. I agree with Tim: I love books set in Alaska.
I am reading the second book in Mary Connealy’s Golden State Treasure series. This one is titled Legends of Gold. I’m uncertain how many of her books bring in characters from previous series, but one of the daughters from The Lumber Barron’s Daughters series is featured in this series as the ranch owned in part by her and her husband is the focal point of the stories. So, the opening lines:
August 1874
Northern California’s Central Valley
“I was really surprised the sheriff didn’t find an excuse to hang that blackhearted varmint,” Josh Hart said as he rode beside Tilda Muirhead on their way home to the Two Harts Ranch near the mining town of Dorada Rio, California. (My, how California has changed since those days.)
Author
I love the song you shared, Edward. Thanks for sharing it! And amen about how California has changed. Sadly.
Zeke Soto is a wonderful name for a character. Love Inspired books are the best. I’m reading Nicholas Sparks’ The Longest Ride. “I sometimes think to myself that I’m the last of my kind.”
Author
I thought it was a great name, too, Deborah! I haven’t read a Nicolas Sparks book in a long time–mostly because someone I come to care about always dies. lol He’s a great writer!
Loved the pictures. Like Barbara, I too will do that with clouds. I now want to go to Alaska. When are we going????
Ok, onto the First 3 lines, because the first line was only a few words.
“No lights shone from the house. Not even the porch light. Homeland Security Agent Claire Green turned her back to the cold wind and leaned on the doorbell again.”
Death Under The Ice by Debororah Sprinkle. I am loving this book
Author
I’m ready for Alaska! As soon as I have the money, anyway. lol I love Deborah Sprinkle’s book!
Thank you Pat!
