Dangerous Storm by Roxanne Rustand is this week’s Reader Friday. Here’s the first line: If she’d known about Jason’s pets, Claire might have thought twice about leaving New York without a big stack of books on pet care.
But first, the meme and verse. I thought I would share images from past December posts this month. This one was from December of last year and I love it!
Claire has inherited her sister’s small, rustic resort on Lake Superior. Given her business experience in New York, running it won’t be much of a challenge. Right?
The cabins and quirky guests she can manage. She hopes.
But now she has guardianship of her orphaned five-year-old nieces and their rebellious brother. With no experience as a mom, can she help them feel secure and happy once more?
These beloved children and their dog, cat, guinea pig and gerbils make life much more interesting. But when Logan, her late sister’s first husband, shows up at her door and pushes her to sell the property back to him, everything changes.
Someone is threatening her…
She might feel a simmering attraction to him, but is Logan behind it, trying to drive her away? Or is it someone else…someone who will stop at nothing to get what he wants?
And now, the danger is rising.
Lake Superior’s North Shore is stunningly beautiful. But it can erupt with incredible, deadly force when a N’Easter slams into its rocky cliffs. A massive storm is on its way.
And life just might depend on knowing who to trust.
My Take:
This was a story that grabbed me right away. Claire is trying so hard to win her sister’s children over, especially her rebellious thirteen-year-old nephew. He held the key to the five-year-old twins’ acceptance of her. Then there’s her next-door neighbor, her sister’s handsome ex-husband who was terrible to her sister. Or so her sister claimed. No way was she falling for his side of the story.
When someone harasses her, and accidents happen around the property after a real estate dealer tries to buy the rustic resort her sister left her, Logan is the one who comes to her rescue. When he reaches out to the nephew, Claire realizes her sister lied about Logan.
This is a great story with twists and turns the reader doesn’t see coming–at least this reader didn’t. The suspense will keep you turning the pages to a satisfying ending.

Dangerous Storm sounds interesting.

It is, Lori!
That is a great picture, Pat. When I was really young, and a curious kid, that verse puzzled me. Did the Magi see the star in the eastern sky? But, that didn’t make sense. When I finally asked one of my teachers about it, I learned it was a phrasing thing. The Magi were from the East and for them the star was in the western sky.
“Dangerous Storm” looks like a good read. After a little research, the North Shore of Lake Superior referenced would be in that lonely stretch of the far northeast coast of Minnesota. Brrr. I for sure would not want to live there!
“The Landoon mansion loomed over the grassy knoll, boasting its grandeur and alluding to hidden secrets.” is the first line of “Deadly Christmas Inheritance” which is the third book in the Texas Crime Scene Cleaners series by Jessica Patch. Let me tell you, it is a thriller!
Congratulations, Paula!

I’ve been on North Shore of Lake Superior, Tim and will return in the summer–last time I went it was mid-May and it sleeted on us. lol I must get Jessica’s Crime Scene Cleaners series!
Great photo and verse. Can’t you just imagine the anticipation the Magi had as they followed that star!
Dangerous Storm sounds like a real page-turner.
“Beneath the brim of her black felt hat, Annalee Gilbert stared at the newly engraved granite stone.” This the first line of When a Memory Whispers by Johnnie Alexander. I’ve been dying to start reading it for over a week, but I want a long bock of time, because I know I won’t want to pause for other activities! lol I love Johnnie’s books!
Author
Barbara, I love Johnnie’s books, especially this one! I read bits and pieces of it in your critique group way back in 2010!
This is on my tbr list. Excited to get to it.

I’m currently almost finished with One Last Promise by Susan May Warren. It’s book 3 of her Alaska Air One Rescue series. It starts off “It was time to tell London the truth.” The story twists and turns from there, and it’s a good one!

The picture and verse are beautiful. I’m glad you shared it again.
I will start reading Rain by Dana McNeely today. It’s a biblical historical novel. The first chapter opens with Deuteronomy 4:23-24 and several lines for the setting. Then the first line:
Aban paused when he saw the dried blood, even though he knew time was running out.
The book was released by Mountain Brook Ink in 2021. It was followed by Whirlwind in 2023. I was recently contacted about proofreading the third book in the series which will release next year. I received Rain and Whirlwind ebooks so I could get familiar with the characters.
