Cold Pursuit by Nancy Mehl is this week’s Reader Friday. Here’s the first line: River Ryland was convinced that madness exists only a breath away from genius.
But first, the scripture and photo. I didn’t take the photo…It’d love to get a shot like that though. And the lighting and colors are so pretty. I think it’s one I bought from iStock a long time ago. That was before I started taking photos. I love that verse from Psalm 16!
Now for Nancy Mehl’s Cold Pursuit. Here’s the cover and back copy:
“This story is sure to leave you breathless from the thrill of the ride. Hold on tight, it’s about to get exhilarating!”–Lynette Eason, bestselling and award-winning author of the Extreme Measures series
“Cold Pursuit sucked me in from the first riveting page and pulled me deeper into an intricate, danger-filled plot.”–Elizabeth Goddard, bestselling author of Cold Light of Day
Ex-FBI profiler River Ryland still suffers from PTSD after a case went horribly wrong. Needing a fresh start, she moves to St. Louis to be near her ailing mother. There she opens a private investigation firm with her friend and former FBI partner, Tony St. Clair. They’re soon approached by a grieving mother who wants them to find out what happened to her teenaged son, who disappeared four years ago. River knows there’s almost no hope the boy is still alive, but his mother needs closure. River and Tony need a case, no matter how cold it might be.
But as they follow the boy’s trail, which gets more complicated at every turn, they find themselves in the path of a murderer determined to punish anyone who gets in his way. As River and Tony race to stop him before he kills again, an even more dangerous threat emerges, stirring up the past that haunts River and plotting an end to her future.
My take:
Cold Pursuit grabbed me from the first page. I couldn’t put the book down until I finished the last page. Then I wanted more…which will come in about nine months. 🙂
Nancy Mehl is a master at creating characters you care about. And then you fear for them as the villain comes after them. This was a fascinating look into the mind of a sociopath with an odd trait–Synesthesia. I had heard of this neurological phenomenon years ago. People with Synesthesia may see or even “hear” color or “taste” sound. It’s a fascinating subject and made for a very interesting killer.
I enjoyed getting to know River and Tony and watching their interest in each other spark, then grow. There are two more books, so it should be fun to see where Mehl takes the story. There is a second story running in the background that will carry over into other books. So you know there is more trouble for River and Tony on the horizon.
Cold Pursuit is a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat story that suspense readers will love!
You can find buy links here. I’m giving away a print copy of Cold Pursuit. Just leave a comment. You can tell me if you’ve ever heard of Synesthesia, or leave the first sentence and name of the book you’re reading. Or both. 😉

Oh, what a great opening line, Gloria!
I have to say that so often I look at the pictures you share and think it is the best one you have shared. Then you come along with another great one. I like that this one has the bend in the road that leads toward the golden sun rays. Imagine what is just around the bend and then the next and the next. God only shows us what is around the next bend when we take that next step and keep following his Way. Great verse!
I was looking for Cold Pursuit at our library yesterday. I’m sure they will get it, but it’s not there yet. I think I have read stories in which someone may have had synesthesia, but I’ve never heard that particular word.
Connor Grantham moved silently through the woods. A cold mist hovered near the ground. Wearing olive-green pants and a light brown jacket, he’d slipped on a bright yellow vest to make sure no overeager deer hunters confused him for a white-tailed buck on the move at the height of the yearly rut.
