Amish Country Ransom by Mary Alford is this week’s Reader Friday. Here’s the first line: A shrilling phone filled his troubled dreams of Afghanistan…until Ethan Connors forced his eyes open.
But first the photo and verse. I came out of my Pilates class Tuesday at six and saw this…of course I whipped my phone out and snapped a shot of the jet and contrail. 🙂 We don’t often see a jet like this where I live. The nearest airport that would support a jet this size is about two hours away. I thought this verse was perfect for it.
Now for Amish Country Ransom by Mary Alford. Here’s the cover and back copy:
A winter storm turns a fight for justice into a struggle for survival…
After FBI agent Jade Powell’s sister is abducted, K-9 trainer Ethan Connors is determined to help the woman who once saved his life. But an enemy from Jade’s past will stop at nothing to keep his agenda hidden. With a storm brewing and a killer hunting them deep into Amish country, can Jade and Ethan survive the treacherous weather long enough to bring a criminal mastermind to justice?
From Love Inspired Suspense: Courage. Danger. Faith.
My take:
This book will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Jade Powell is former military as is Ethan Connors. When Jade asks for Ethan’s help to find her sister, he can’t turn her down–she saved his life, after all.
Ethan feels he failed his wife when he didn’t come home when his wife was first diagnosed with cancer. When he did finally make it, they only had a short time together before she died. Jade is carrying a heavy burden from being kidnapped by a vicious enemy and now he has her sister. The action is nonstop as Jade and Ethan try to rescue her sister. Each of them must face their failures and learn to lean on God.
This action-packed romantic suspense will keep you glued to the page until the very end. You can find buy links here.

Thanks, Diana! It is very interesting.
Amish Country Ransom sounds suspenseful for sure. Thanks for the link to your interview!

It’s very suspenseful! Not really an Amish story, but that’s how it’s marketed…
I will look for Amish Country Ransom. I love reading all the Love Inspired Romance books that I can get my hands on. Thank you.
Author
Kim, I love LIS!! It’s at Walmart, etc…
I love watching jets with contrails, Pat. Your photo is a classic. You chose a good verse to go with it.
“Amish Country Ransom” sounds like an exciting book. I’m looking forward to watching your interview.
“Christmas in the Crosshairs” (1st story by Kate Angelo) begins with “When someone stabbed Tomás Muñoz in the back, he turned around and stabbed them in the face. There was a price for betrayal, and tonight they would pay.” All three stories in this book are fast paced thrillers.
Earlier this week, I read Colleen Coble’s “Haven of Swans”, another great book from her Rock Harbor series. Rock Harbor is a fictional town in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on the west side of the Keweenaw Peninsula. What made this already great story even better for me was that a part of it takes place in my hometown in the Lower Peninsula, Bay City! I love stories that are set in places I have some familiarity with.
Author
Tim, I’ll have to get Christmas in the Crosshairs if I don’t already have it. I enjoy reading Colleen Coble’s Rock Harbor stories because she makes me feel like I’m in Rock Harbor! I hope you enjoy the interview. 😉
It was a fun interview, Pat…especially watching it live! 🙂
Getting ready to start The Secret to Happiness by Suzanne Woods Fisher. If it’s like her other books, there should be quite a bit of refreshing and delightful humor in them. The first lines take place at Penn State Ice Cream School. “ Two months ago, Callie Dixon had been the executive chef at one of the largest convention hotels in Boston, a hotel so highly esteemed that the Food Safety Conference chose to hold their annual meeting there. Today she was serving up bowls of ice cream to amateurs who had hopes to become the next Ben & Jerry.”
Author
Thank you so much for watching it live, Barbara! That was such a treat to see you there. And Suzanne Woods Fisher’s The Secret to Happiness sounds like a book I’d love! Will have to get it.
That book has a great opening line!
Author
I think so, too, Delores.
sounds interesting
Author
Thanks, BN. It is very interesting.
I’ve read many books by Mary Alfred and enjoyed everyone.

It is, Judy! I think you’d enjoy it!
Thank you so much, Pat, for sharing Amish Country Ransom with your readers!
Author
I really enjoyed it and think my readers will, too, Mary! Thanks for stopping by.
Ps 19:1 is a favorite verse of mine! Sounds like another interesting book.
Like you and Tim I really enjoy the Rock Harbor series by Colleen Coble.
Just finished Christy Barritt’s book He walks Among Us. ” First line “No one has ever really loved me!” This sounds like it is a romance, however it is an intense suspense. Very good read available on KU.
Author
Thanks, Miss Mary. I think I’ve used Psalm 19:1 several times with different photos. Christy’s book sounds very intriguing!
This is the first line of the book that I am reading, and it is very good:
Prologue
FIRE WAS CLEANSING. SACRIFICIAL, ALMOST.
Into the Fire by Irene Hannon
Gloria, thank you for mentioning Irene’s latest book. I had it on my radar, but I had not yet preordered it. I’ve done that now and I’m waiting for the release early October. Irene was the first Christian suspense author I read some 11 years ago. Love her books.
Author
Wow, Gloria, that first line grabs you!
I think that you will enjoy this one and the new series that it begins, Tim. I am glad to remind you about it.
“The Paradise, Missouri, patrol car rolled to a stop beneath an overhead light in the deserted parking lot” – taken from Serial Threat by Valerie Hansen. I am looking forward to reading Amish Country Ransom. It sounds exciting.
Author
Now that’s a scary line–you know something bad is going to happen, Linda!
I would love to be on that jet. I also enjoy being on those jets. The verse fits beautifully.
I am doing a first read of a new book to be released by Mountain Brook Ink in November. This is the fourth book in The Tethered World Chronicles by Heather L.L. FitzGerald and is available for pre-order on Amazon. The title is The Secret of Stardust and the first line is: The acrid odor of incense was a harbinger of death.
Author
That portends a tense read, Edward. And I love that photo. When I saw it, I knew I had to try and get a shot. Oh, and Monday’s blog will feature the half moon taken before dark…
I haven’t read a Mary Alford book in a long time, but I do love her writing! I didn’t even know there was such thing as Amish suspense until I read one of her books years ago.
I’m currently reading a new clean contemporary rom-com release by Courtney Walsh called “Can’t Help Falling”. It’s part of a series called Sweater Weather; though I would only read her book since she’s the only author I know & they aren’t Christian fiction (though they are clean stories). This one is about the heroine was in love with her best friends brother in high school & now he’s back in town after being gone for years. I’m not very far into it, but so far it’s so funny and I already love these characters. Anyway, here’s the first few lines:
“I have a secret. Not the kind of secret that could land me ten to fifteen years in prison, or one that Dr. Phil would announce if my parents revealed that they found me in an abandoned basket at the circus. Although THAT would be one heck of an episode. It would also explain my affinity for peanuts. It doesn’t matter what kind of secret it is….it’s a secret I don’t want getting out.”
Author
Trixi, I love Mary’s books, too. And Courtney Walsh’s book sounds great. I just picked up a clean romance from Melinda Curtis.
I should say in case you didn’t know, Courtney Walsh is a Christian fiction writer but this book is a sweet & clean read. I don’t often read those kind unless it’s by an author I already know and trust.
Author
I used to write the sweet romances for Heart Warming, Trixi. That how I met Melinda Curtis. 🙂
Pat I just watched your interview and thoroughly enjoyed it! You came across as very relaxed and personable – someone with whom I could enjoy sharing a cup of coffee or glass of tea. It was great to learn more about you. Thank you for sharing.
I liked your words “never give up” and I’m so glad you didn’t!
Author
Thank you so much for watching the video! You’ve made my day! I wasn’t nervous at all–just had a good time talking about writing. with Karla! Have a blessed Sunday!
Author
Thank you so much for watching, Miss Mary! I’d love to share a cup of coffee with you some day!
sounds like another award winning book for Mary!
Author
It is, Shelia!
I love your verse and photo, as always. Looks like a nice clear day, which we’ve been having a lot of those lately here in East TN!
I’ve never read any of Mary’s books but this sounds like another to add to my list. I’m still working on The Secret to Happiness. I’m not getting to read for very long at a time due to cataract surgery last week and the other eye will be next week, so right now my eyes are fighting each other!
Author
Once the surgeries are over, you’ll be reading up a storm, Ms. Dottie! I’ve had both mine done and now I drive at night again. 🙂
That sounds very encouraging. My TBR list is getting quite long and I’m ready to get on with it!
Author
I’m so glad to be partially responsible for an overloaded TBR table!
Love the picture and the verse. So good together. Just listened to this podcast. Thank you for opening up about how you write and sharing the story when you were in 6th grade, the murder. Must of been tramatizing. I enjoyed hearing a sliver of your life. Thank you! DJ
Author
Thank you DJ! I will be telling much of that story next March when I keynote our MidSouth Christian Writers Conference. 🙂
