A Mountain Too Steep ~ Reader Friday

A Mountain Too Steep, Psalm 65:8

A Mountain Too Steep by Robin Patchen is this week’s Reader Friday book. Here’s the first line: “Camilla Wright was acquainted with late-night phone calls.

But first, a word about why this post is late…at 6:59 I emailed my edits due at 7 a.m. this morning (after a two-day extension by my wonderful editor)! Talk about cutting it close! But they are stick-a-fork-in-me done! For now. They will come back again next week for more edits on what I just edited and then again before the book goes to printing. Publishing is not a quick process.

Now for the photo and verse. I took the photo almost thirty years ago at the Point on Arkabutla Lake near Memphis and a small print of it and a sister photo hang in my hallway. And I love that verse, especially since I’m shouting for joy today.

Now for A Mountain Too Steep by Robin Patchen. First I want to let you know you can read the backstory about this book at the Suspense Sisters…click here. Now for the cover and back copy:

A car accident that might not be an accident at all. A murderer bent on revenge. And a woman desperate to keep her family together.

She’s already lost her soul mate. She’ll do anything to protect her children. For the sake of her kids, Camilla Wright managed to survive after her husband’s murder.

Awakened in the night with the news that her teenage son and nephew have been in a horrific car accident, she rushes to the hospital in a haze of shock and panic. The boys were supposed to be skiing in the mountains east of Salt Lake City. What were they doing so far west? More alarming, the wreck might not have been an accident at all.

While Jeremy fights for his life, Camilla is running out of time to discover who lured her son and her nephew into the desert. With each new clue, the terrifying truth becomes clearer. Her husband’s killers are closing in…

My take:

This gripping tale held me spellbound until I finished it. Robin Patchen does a great job of making the reader keep flipping the pages! Camilla’s fight against the man who killed her husband shows her courage and determination. In fact, all of the characters in A Mountain Too Steep make this a must-read book.

The intricate plotline weaves a story that shows how God takes us over the mountains in our lives. Readers will see courage overcome fear and doubt. Camila exemplifies a great example of believing God will work everything out for the good, even if it doesn’t look the way we want.

This is a book I highly recommend.

And as a bonus if you don’t get my newsletter (you can sign up for it at the top right corner of the page here), here’s the back cover copy of Fatal Witness that I’ve been editing this week!

As a child, artist and potter Dani Bennett witnessed the brutal murder of her parents. With no memory of the incident or her true identity, she was forced to take on a new name and a new life, hidden away in Montana for the past 25 years.

Mae Richmond has spent the same stretch of time searching for her granddaughter, who went missing the night her daughter and son-in-law were murdered. Convinced the woman she saw in a pottery magazine feature is the woman she’s been searching for, she enlists the help of K-9 officer Mark Lassiter of Pearl Springs, Tennessee, who tracks Dani down.

Skeptical but curious, Dani sets out on a journey to uncover the secrets of her past and reclaim her true identity. But someone close to her is determined to keep the truth of what happened all those years ago hidden.

I have not read Jessica’s book but know the back story! It is incredible! And before that her daughter had an issue and was recovering!
I don’t think I would like to “ write what you know” in that case!!!
    Gorgeous picture and verse!
Your new book sounds awesome! Can’t wait, but I guess I’ll have to!
I know you must feel good about finishing your book!

Paula, I think this is the best book Robin Patchen has written and I’ve loved all her books! And I’m glad you liked the back cover blurb for Fatal Witness. And yes, I am very happy to send in these edits.

So many wows to write today!!! Congratulations on getting the edits in with time to spare. 😉 A minute is a minute, right? 🙂 Clap! Clap!

This photo! Wow! Is not strong enough. Absolutely gorgeous, Pat! The Scripture…perfect. And I so agree with your words about shouting for joy today with the edits finished. Pretty much what my brain said as well! Yay!

Yes, Robin Patchen does keep you turning pages. I can’t wait to read A Mountain Too Steep! Great review. I need more bookshelves. 🙁

Love all your books, Robin! You knocked it out of the park with this one, though–not that the other books haven’t been great, but I think what you went through with your son’s accident shows through–a writer wastes nothing. 🙂

I haven’t read A Mountain too Steep, but it sounds exciting. Congrats on getting your edits turned in with a whole minute to spare.:-) I’m reading Space Station Investigation by Nikki Haverstock. It’s a cozy set in space. How cool is that? The opening: “I reached down to rub my ankle. The deep ache was worse than it’d been in months, but that made sense, given the day.”

I love the picture and verse. A Mountain too Steep was one of the books I did a first read of a while back and didn’t feel I should share the first line. Great story. The back story of the real accident involving Robin’s son and nephew was equally gripping. Thank God, they didn’t have evil people after them.

I’m reading Break PD Day by Colleen Coble. The first line: Stupid kayak. Doesn’t that reach out and grab you? Just two words.

Okay, here’s the next line: Ella Anderson lay spread-eagled on her back on a tiny spit of land in Lake Superior.

Pat, I have it on good authority that Break OF Day is even better than Break PD Day. I’m not sure how I typed PD this morning instead of the word of.

Pat, I echo everything Barbara said about the photo and verse!

I finished Robin’s book last week, and it was indeed fantastic! Readers will NOT be disappointed.

I’m almost finished with Kelly Irvin’s “No Child of Mine”. Another great book.

My next read is “Threat Detection” by Sharon Dunn. It begins with “Volcanologist Aubrey Smith was grateful for the cool of the evening as she slipped out of her backpack, a nice break from the August heat. She gazed up at the focus of her research. Even though Mount St. Helens was beautiful at dusk, she had to work quickly to gather her samples and make the hefty hike back to the lab where she worked.”

In summer of 1980 I bought a new car. I was planning a drive from San Diego to Moscow, ID to visit a good friend and his family. Then Mount St. Helens blew up. He advised me to postpone my trip because the ash fallout would not be good for my new car. I made the trip a few years later. Beautiful country there.

I have Kelly Irvin’s book on my to-get list, Tim, and I agree about Robin’s book! I remember when Mount St. Hellens blew…I think it even affected our weather here.

I didn’t realize Sharon’s book was out…will have to get that one, too…so many books and so little time!

I finished A Mountain too Steep in the wee hours Thursday morning. I just couldn’t put it down! I have enjoyed all of Robin Patchen’s books, but this one was the best yet. I’m really looking forward to her Wright Brothers of Maine series about Daniel’s brothers.
Thanks for sharing your photo and verse; both are lovely!

I know exactly what you mean about the wee hours of the morning, L. 🙂 I wondered when I saw that Daniel had all those brothers in special ops if that’s what was next! Can’t believe I’ve missed that. lol but I’ve had my nose buried in edits and writing the 3rd book. lol

I was given the honor of reading an ARC of A Mountain to Steep. And I loved it, action from the the very beginning. And as always deep spiritual experiences throughout the story. One of my favorite characters is the young man who was once a child/soldier. God had people in place to protect Camilla and her family all along the way.

Another beautiful photo Pat and you do so well matching the appropriate verses with your photos!
Congrats on completing your edits! A Mountain Too Steep sounds like a great read and I’ll add it to my TBR books.

Love the picture and scripture. Every time I pick up my Bible I always find a gold nugget that jumps out at me. Colossians 1:19 NLT. “For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ.”
