26 Below – Reader Friday

26 Below' 2 Samuel 23:4

26 Below by Kimberly Woodhouse is this week’s Reader Friday. Here’s the first line: 50 Above Zero October 1–     2:00 p.m. Fairbanks. First official day on the job as Emergency Operations Center director, and Darcie Phillips found herself wanting to play hooky.

But first the photo and verse. I took the photo on the way to water aerobics once again–it truly pays to get up early! I love sunrise photos, and I thought this verse went well with the photo! Pretty soon, the sun will be much higher in the sky when I go to water aerobics so there won’t be the opportunity to get sunrise photos. Early morning is my favorite time of day. What’s yours?

Oh, and I got my edits in and they’re off to the copy editor now…shouldn’t hear back for a couple of months, giving me time to start the third book!

Now on to KimberleyWoodhouse’s novel, 26Below. Here’s the back cover copy:

“A thrill ride. . . as current as today’s front-page news!”
–Colleen Coble,
USA Today best-selling author

In her new role as Emergency Operations Center director for Fairbanks, Alaska, Darcie Phillips prevents disasters. But none of her training can prepare her for the terror that’s coming.

As a cybersecrity specialist, Jason Myers is determined to ferret out any threats to the town he now calls home–and that includes his reckless brother and his ecoterrorist friends.

When an old woman’s wild prediction–widespread destruction as soon as the Fairbanks temperature falls to 26 below–hits national headlines, neither Darcie nor Jason sees a real risk to anything but tourism.

Then the bodies start dropping.

Darcie is relying on her experience and intelligence to stop a killer; Jason is relying on God to guide the way. They’ll have to work together to find the truth and prevent their Alaskan town from becoming a city of nightmares. The first in a thrilling new suspense series from best-selling author Kimberley Woodhouse, 26 Below will delight fans of Lynnette Eason, Irene Hannon, and Lynn Blackburn.

My Take:

Kimberly Woodhouse is a new-to-me author and I will be looking for other books by her! This book is filled with fascinating characters from the heroine and hero to the crazy old lady who keeps trying to warn everyone that bad things are going to happen when the temps drop below 26 degrees and people will die.

Both the hero and heroine are working through some serious issues. I love the descriptions and feel of Alaska in the book. And I enjoyed trying to figure out who the bad guy was. It’s a tightly woven story with plenty of twists and turns. A book romantic suspense readers will love.

That was a real page turner by Kim! My first by her in this genre. I’ve read some of hers in historical.
The picture and verse were just perfect!
My favorite time of day is morning too. But really, anytime I can read is my favorite! Ha ha!
Looking forward to your new book. It should be here soon!

Paula, I used to get up at 5 a.m. just to make sure I didn’t miss anything. lol Now if I get up at 6, I feel like I’m doing good…but that is 5 old time! I really enjoyed Kim’s book!

I’ve been in -60 degrees below in NWern British Columbia twice and because it was sunny and low humidity, it didn’t seem that bad–except when I took off my mitts to open the wire door of the rabbit cage to give them feed, my fingers froze to the wire. Time to go back inside! I love today’s verse. There are gray skies and pretty constant rain in Minnesota today so I’ll be looking forward to that sunshine after the rain. Have a great weekend!

Pat, that photo looks like it could warm even a -26 degree day. I love how God is described in that verse. Morning is also my favorite time of day. I’m up with the cats at 4:30!

I have not read anything by Ms Woodhouse, and 26 Below looks like a good book to start with. I must say that growing up in Michigan, and spending almost 10 years in Minnesota, I’ve never experienced anytime that cold (not counting wind chills in MN. Brrr.) Not even when it’s 115+ in Tucson am I tempted to go back to cold climes.

I just finished Carrie Parks’ book, “The Bones Will Speak”, and indeed they do. This was a thriller from start to finish, and never suspected who the serial killer was until it was revealed. I highly recommend this book (2nd in a series).

I just started “Scent of Truth” by Valerie Hansen. It’s the second in the Pacific Northwest K-9 Unit continuity series. It starts: “Shadows lengthened, shrouding the well-traveled paths through the old-growth forest and accentuating the lingering chill of a late spring. Mount Rainier National Park Ranger Brooke Stevens took a breath of the icy air, shivered and turned up the collar of her forest-green jacket.”

I love the anticipation and surprise of your photos, Pat! The Scriptures always fit perfectly, as well. Great way to start the day! 🙂

Good review on 26 Below. That kind of mystery in the cold weather intrigues me. Ha!

When I was in Russia one time, my friends and I took a bus and slushed over to the Gulf of Finland where they introduced me to an ice picnic. Brrrr. We carved out seats in the snow, built a fire and roasted veggies while watching men climb from their ships to do ice fishing. I was never so cold in my life, yet it was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever experienced!

“Tennyson Walker’s mission was clear: find Dante Torres, take him down by whatever means necessary, capture the insurgents, and get out.” This is the first line of the Prologue in Distorted by Christy Barritt! Boy, is it a page turner!

In my heart, I am a morning person, but in reality I am a night owl.

Yay! Edits to the copy editor! 🙂

Third attempt. I’m away from home and the internet here is acting wonky.

Love the picture and verse. We often say the sun looks like a ball of fire. Here it looks like a huge flame.

I am reading In the Shadow of the River by Ann H. Gabhart, which releases on May 9. First lines: Jacci Reed’s mother shook her awake, then put her fingers lightly over Jacci’s lips. “Shh. We have to get off the boat.”

26 Below is my next book and this is the first line of the Prologue and what I posted at Carrie’s site: (Readingismysuperpower) I am excited to read it. Still working on The Secret to Happiness by Suzanne Woods Fisher because I also read The Perfect Staging for Murder by Kathleen Bridge.

Gorgeous photo and perfect verse! Pat you always do a great job pairing the right verse with your photos! I,too, am a morning person. When I view the rising sun and the beautiful skies I thank God for allowing me to see the magnificent picture God has placed for us! Of course there are some awesome sunsets too. I just finished Elizabeth Goddard’s Cold Light of Day – great book. 26 Below sounds like a good read

I absolutely LOVE Kimberley’s romantic historical fiction!! Especially ones where she co-authors with Tracie Peterson. I’m excited to see her first romantic suspense novel. Sounds like she hit it out of the ballpark from all the reviews I’ve read.

I’m currently halfway through a book by Heidi Gray McGill called “Matters of the Heart” and here’s the first few lines:
“A flush of adrenaline tingled through Katie’s body. She’d made it into the kitchen without the floor squeaking or the door scraping. Right hand on the latch, she applied pressure to the wood with her hip, hoping that the door would be just as silent as it settled into the warped frame.”

Is this where we put how much time is left on the Goodreads giveaway? I know we did that last week, but on the BOLO group on Facebook you had said to comment on your blog. So here goes….

I’m not familiar with Kim’s books but I put it on my BTR list. I like this, I get book titles to read while I’m waiting on my favorite authors to come out with their new ones. I have found some really good books that I ordinarily wouldn’t have chosen, but they were recommended by a known author, and decided to try them.

My favorite time of day would have to be mid morning because I’m such a night owl!
I’m still currently reading Terri Blackstock’s Restoration series, on the 4th one
“Dawn’s Light.” The first few lines are: Beth Branning sat on her bike a block up the street from Alabama Bank and Trust and watched the hungry mob waiting in the rain. The violent May thunderstorm pounded and cracked like special effects on a Hollywood set, drenching those who waited to get their money. If her parents saw her they would freak. It was no place for a thirteen -year-old, they would say. This series has a lot of suspense in it!

I love your photo and verse!
16 days and 2:47:10 left on GoodReads sight till the giveaway, this is exciting!!

I read Ms Blackstock’s Restoration series several years ago. It was a great series, and the circumstances portrayed are very plausible. Good plot, and good writing!

I have found myself making mental notes on things I need to be stocking up on (again) because we just never know, not if but when, this could happen. It gets you to thinking!
