Whew! As I sit here typing on my laptop, I’m thankful the backup battery had a full charge when the power went out about seven hours ago. Before dark fell, power saws droned in the background as people in my small town picked up debris left behind after either straight-line winds or an F1 tornado hit our area. Tomorrow promises to be a workday.
It seems so strange to sit in the dark with no TV and no radio–even our radio station was down. And no phone service on landlines or cell phones. When the storm hit, it wasn’t a typical storm. It wasn’t raining very much, but the wind–it was so strange. First, it whirled leaves one way and seconds later those same leaves whirled in the opposite direction. It made me think of dust devils, except there was no dust.
And now onto last week’s Mystery Question: Four insurance claims. Three are true. I made up one. Can you guess which one?
- “I didn’t think the speed limit applied after midnight.”
- “I was driving along the motorway when the police pulled me over onto the hard shoulder. Unfortunately, I was in the middle lane and there was another car in the way.”
- “The car in front hit the pedestrian but he got up so I hit him again.”
- “I didn’t know it was illegal for my twelve-year-old daughter to drive my car–after all, it’s my car.”
And the answer is…#4. Congrats to all who guessed correctly!
Below is the house the tree hit when it was twisted away from the trunk! There are many houses like this but thank goodness no one in our little town was hurt died! I’ve learned at least one person had to have twenty stitches in his leg when he wasn’t paying attention to the power saw. I learned a long time ago to give those things a wide berth!
Now for this week’s Mystery Question: Below are four facts that sound fake. Three are true, but I made up one. Which one did I make up?
- The reason chameleons change their skin to fit any color or pattern in their surroundings is to hide from predators.
- Ann Frank, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Barbara Walters were all born in the same year.
- The Guinness Book of World Records was created to settle bar arguments.
Okay, Super Sleuths, which one did I make up? Leave your answer in the comments and I’ll enter you in a drawing for a book from my library! P.S. I know you can find the answers to these, but guess first. 🙂

Monique, I’m so glad you find my quizzes fun! It’s fun finding the true ones–you’d be amazed at all the ‘stuff’ I learn. Thanks for taking the time to read my blog and respond!
I love your word choices in the great write-up of Corinth’s tornado-like (or tornado) storm. I’m choosing #2 this week. Some of these amaze me–good fun.

We’ll see, Delores, and these amaze me as well. lol It’s always good to ‘see’ you here!
Pat, I think Delores in on to something, so I’m going with #2 also. Those chameleons are really fast. I had one as a kid. Grossed out my grandma, and mom wasn’t too happy with it either.
Fortunately your power outage was brief. I’m sure many of your readers have read Terri Blackstock’s Restoration Series. Now that was a power outage! Glad you were OK in your storm.

Tim, at one time our county with a population of about 30,000 had 17,000 homes without electricity. Today, three days later, there are still people without power. And I loved Teri’s series. She’s a Mississippi writer, too, you know. 🙂
I believe #1

Another one for #2, Elizabeth. We’ll see next week. Thanks for dropping by!
No one has guessed #4 yet, so I’ll go with that one as being made up.

Once again, the answers are all over the board, Jeanna! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!
Interesting subject line this morning. I had put on the coffee, gotten dressed, and headed out to get our newspaper. As I opened the door, I thought I heard a pop in our family room. Walking to the paper box, I heard a house alarm sounding somewhere out the street. I came back in to the coffee maker to get coffee and the light was off. I thought I must have failed to turn it on, but noticed the carafe was full. Glancing around, I realized the power was off. Now, almost two hours later, I check email and see your title. Coincidence? I choose to think positive. I’m about to win a book! I am choosing #3. I never gave much thought to when any of them were born but am fairly sure they were born before me. I think the last one could be true but wonder how many bars keep a copy laying around to settle the arguments.

Once again, I love your logic, Edward. And your optimism. 🙂 We’ll see how it works next week. Always good to ‘see’ you here. And aren’t you glad your coffee was made!
The answer is #2.
I’m so glad you weren’t hurt in the storm ❤️.

Thanks, Jessica. It was scary the crazy way the wind was blowing. And then the power went out and the last time something like this happened it was up to 3 weeks before power was restored. It’s so sad to see all the damage.
It’s always good to ‘see’ you here.
Tough one. I am going to say #1 this week.

I’m glad it’s tough, Gloria! Thanks for stopping by. We’ll see next week if #1 is the correct answer.
I think #2 is a partial truth, chameleons can hide behind their colors but I also think there’s got to be another answer as well 😉
I’m glad you’re safe Patricia! What a scary time that must have been seeing all that wind. Living on the Oregon coast, we get our share of it during the winter months. There have been times when the wind gusts were 60-80 miles an hour! I never like it when those happen, I hunker down and make sure to have my battery powered lanterns & flashlight batteries charged and ready to go. Thankfully, I’ve never been without power for days on end nor have I witnessed a tornado! Growing up in Illinois, there was always the possibilty of one, especially if we got a real good thunderstorm going. Scary!
I should add that my answer will be #2…I forgot to say that!

Hi Trixi. Someone here clocked the winds at 80 mph. I think the eye of Tropical Storm Olga passed right over us and that’s what caused the problem. Some in our community have been told it might be up to three weeks before they get power. Thanks for stopping by and we’ll see next week if you’re right about chameleons.
#4 — just guessing! 🙂

We’ll see, MS Barb. Thanks for dropping by and joining the conversation.

Hi Patricia~ We’ll see next week if it’s #1…thanks for leaving a comment!
I’m going with #2. Due to my husband’s work hours, I always seem to be home with our 2 small children during the storms and power outages. Last one in June, we had to wait until the bad stuff was past and sit in the van while I charged my phone and they watched the DVD player until they fell asleep. Then it was wait until it quit raining enough to carrying them in without waking them lol. Thank goodness most times it’s just a few hours. I always feel for those who have to go days and longer. You realize how difficult it is just to do the basics without electricity.

Nicole, I feel for you, being alone when storms hit! Especially with two small children. We still have people without power almost a week later here in Corinth. Always good to ‘see’ you here!
