Vanishing Point

Patricia Bradley Mystery Question 30 Comments

I realize this isn’t Reader Friday, but I just finished a book that will release today and I want to share it with you.

Vanishing Point is a Nikki Boyd novel by Lisa Harris. Here’s the back cover copy:

During Garrett Addison’s first week on the job as a criminal investigator for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, his team is called out to a murder scene of a young girl. She’s the third victim in a string of disappearances with one thing in common–a Polaroid photo of each victim left behind at the crime scene.

The FBI is pulled into the case to help, and Garrett finds himself working with Special Agent Jordan Lambert, the woman he once loved. When yet another girl dies–number six–Garrett blames himself and believes he doesn’t have what it takes to be an agent. What he’ll discover is that, while he may be done with the killer, the killer is not done with him–or Jordan.

Bestselling and award-winning author Lisa Harris unveils an unforgettable story of a case that has haunted the public and law enforcement for more than a decade. Fans of the Nikki Boyd Files will thrill to finally discover what actually happened to Nikki’s sister, Sarah. New readers will become instant fans after devouring this chilling tale.

I could have done Lisa in myself Wednesday night, or rather Thursday morning at 2 am when I finished Vanishing Point. I needed sleep! But I had to find out what happened next, and then next until The End. Discovering the backstory about who killed Nikki Boyd’s sister was fascinating, like a puzzle coming together. I definitely give this one 5 stars! And don’t think you’ll go to bed and read a couple of chapters…

Now for last week’s Mystery Question: In 1983, a man’s body was found in a wooded area. It was determined to be a man who had disappeared two years earlier. Later his vehicle was found and the secret panel in his Ford van where he’d stashed $95,000 had been ripped out and the money was gone. Which statement below is a false statement about the crime:
  1. Ice crystals were found around the man’s heart, and the medical examiner determined the body had been on ice for two years in order to disguise the time of death.
  2. If the killer had thawed the body before dumping it, the medical examiner could not have told the body had been frozen.
  3. The man wanted to elude debtors and had started over in another part of the country with a partner, but right after he disappeared, the two got into an argument and the partner killed him and froze the body for two years before dumping it.
  4. The medical examiner soaked the man’s hands in glycerin and water to obtain prints and identify the victim.

And the answer is…#3. Almost everyone said #2, but it’s actually true. The ME stated that if the killer had thawed the body before dumping, he would have missed that. It was the ice crystals around the heart that alerted him to the fact that the body had been frozen. Remember, it’s 1983 and forensics have advanced a long way since then.

And now for this week’s Mystery Question: It’s an evening in 1933 and two couples are playing bridge when two gunmen burst into the home and take the two men captive. Although warned not to, one of the wives called the police and the FBI. Within 90 minutes, one of the men was back at the house, shaken but otherwise unharmed. Four days later a ransom note was delivered by mail. Enclosed with the ransom demand was a note in the victim’s handwriting. Once the ransom was paid, the victim was released, but within three weeks, the kidnappers were caught. Which of the following statements is false regarding the case:
  1. The man who was released was involved in the kidnapping and slipped up when he knew too much about the kidnappers.
  2. The kidnapped victim left his fingerprints in several places, even though bound and blindfolded.
  3. One of the kidnappers was married to “Machine Gun” Kelly and this kidnapping was Kelly’s first and only excursion into that type of crime.
  4. The victim’s remarkable memory and attention to detail pinpointed the location where he was kept.

Okay, Super Sleuths, which is the false statement? Leave your answer in the comments to be entered in a drawing for a Christian adult coloring book.

It did seem likely to me that the kidnap victim released was involved, but #3 Machine Gun Kelly is false. I totally agree w/ you about Vanishing Point. It messed up my work schedule for the day, but, oh, it was worth it. Can’t wait for her next!

I started reading Vanishing Point last night. It grabbed me at the beginning, but I had to put it down after 50 pages or I would have been reading all night. I say #1 is false.

I’ll say #1. Wow, VP sounds like a good one…I have not read much by Lisa Harris. Is this a stand alone?

I had read somewhere (I think on the CBD product page, maybe?) that VP is the 4th book in the Nikki Boyd series. I see it says “Nikki Boyd Novel” on the cover. Is that different? I read the back cover says this story is about different characters, rather than Nikki, so I was very confused! I suppose if it’s meant to be a stand alone instead, that could clear things up.

Hi Jerusha! This book goes back to the beginning and then goes forward to the end of the Nikki Boyd series. Nikki is in it, but not a main character. TBI agent Garrett Addison and FBI agent Jordan Lambert are the main characters. It answers some of the questions I had about Nikki’s sister’s murder. 🙂

I want to say #3 is the false statement.
