More Dumb Laws ~ Mystery Question

Patricia Bradley Mystery Question 49 Comments

More Dumb Laws; Psalm 146:1

More Dumb Laws is this week’s Mystery Question. As you might have guessed last week, most of these are laws that have been on the books for a long time. I hope they make you laugh as you try to figure out which one I made up.

Now for last week’s Mystery Question–Dumb Laws on the Books. Just like with dumb crimes, three of these laws are really on the books, and I made one up. Note someone compiled this list in 2011 and some of the laws can be quite old. Can you guess which one I made up?
  1. In this state, you cannot chain your alligator to a fire hydrant.
  2. Police can arrest you for selling candy to a customer in this state unless the customer has a note from his physician.
  3. It is illegal in one state to marry the same man more than 3 times.
  4. Even though it is legal to hunt a bear in this state, it is illegal to wake a bear and take a picture for photo opportunities.

And the answer is…#2. Congrats on all who guessed correctly!

Now for this week’s Mystery Question–More Dumb Laws. Just like with dumb crimes, three of these laws are really on some state’s books, and I made one up. Note someone compiled this list in 2011 and some of the laws can be quite old. Can you guess which one I made up?
  1. You may not have an ice cream cone in your back pocket at any time.
  2. Hitting someone with your natural arm is “simple assault”, while hitting someone with an artificial arm is “aggravated assault”.
  3. Catching bullfrogs in a tomato patch is illegal.
  4. It is legal to throw a snake at someone but it is illegal to shake a snake at someone.

Okay Super Sleuths, which law did I make up? Leave your answers in the comments and I’ll enter you in a drawing for a book from my library!

More Dumb Laws is this week's Mystery Question. As usual three laws are true, and I made one up. Can you guess which one? Leave your answers in the comments and I'll enter you in a July drawing for a book from my library! Share on X

Pat, that photo is amazing. The sun looks like it’s being held over the water on a light stick. I’m certainly glad to know that the God who has the power to create the universe promises to be faithful in His promises to me. What a comfort!

These dumb laws sure leave me scratching my head. What could possibly move someone to make such laws? But then, we need to consider that circumstances of the past could be quite different from ours today. In light of that, I’m going to say you made up #2. I’m no legal scholar, but I question that aggravated assault would be defined that way. Then again, we’re talking about dumb laws, so…

Oh that photo….I would love to be splashing around in those waves! God did a fantastic job giving us such a beautiful world.

Vera’s comment about who would ever throw a snake at someone convicted me. 🙁 When I was about five I had caught several handfuls of Japanese beetles and stuffed them into my little doll’s washing machine. My mother was deathly afraid of those creepy things. I showed them to her and said I’m going to throw these on you. She told me I had better not! I weighed the cost and did it. Boy did I ever get a well-deserved blistering! Fortunately, she did forgive me. 🙂

Gracious! These laws were dumb, through and through. Going with #1. I can’t imagine stuffing an ice cream cone in any back pocket! How did society function back then?

Yes, God did do a fantastic job of giving us a beautiful world, Barbara! I wish you’d come pick the Japanese beetles off my rose bushes! I just learned Neem oil doesn’t work this late in the season. I bet you did get a blistering. lol We’ll see if it’s #1 next week and I’ll try to find out how old the law is…

Gosh, I haven’t seen Japanese beetles in decades. They are a challenge. The best time to get them off is very early in the morning when they are kind of sluggish. Have you done the Dawn soap and water thing? I don’t know that I would be brave enough to pick them off now. But it was fun when I was five! Lol

Barbara, I think we can all appreciate those early lessons about weighing the costs before taking action. The Bible even talks about doing that. I know that I quickly learned the cost of disobeying my parents was pretty steep. They set me straight early on, and I’m very glad they did.

      1. Barbara Diggs

Tim, you are correct. Weighing the cost before taking actions continues to this day. Praise the Lord for Scriptures and The Holy Spirit to direct our paths. The cost of disobeying my parents came dearly as a child. I do believe I was a strong-willed child, but I learned from it.

Good morning! The photo is stunning and the verse is such an incredible comfort. Knowing our Heavenly Father, the Creator of All, is with us in our every moment is such a Beautiful, Loving and Peaceful reminder!
I have to choose #1. I see how #4 came about- Someone in the Wild West angrily shook a snake at someone else which scared all who were witness. In later town talk and gossip everyone realized there was no law to prevent it from happening again and again…especially since now they knew there was a known snake shaker in their midst. In the discussion to create the law, someone said, “But wait! What if a snake is found and needs to be thrown to remove it?!” So after some discussion the wise townsfolk lawmakers addressed that issue by only making the shaking illegal, not the throwing, hence future snake shaking stopped or at the very least slowed a bit. Though I suppose it’s possible the snake shaker moved away.

I am still laughing at the last part of your reply, Debra! Makes me wonder if you’ve been sitting in on some of our legislative sessions. lol We’ll see next week if it’s #1.
And it’s so comforting to know God is with us every moment.

“Dumb” is a very fitting description. It’s hard to believe any of these are real but they sure gave me a big laugh when I read them. I’ll guess #3

Love the picture. It looks like you could walk right on up that golden pathway through the gates of Heaven. The verse fits the picture.

I can’t imagine why anyone but a mother would care if someone put an ice cream cone in the back pocket. But I don’t think many laws have been put on the books to try to eliminate an irritating mess for a mother to have to clean up. That is a strange one. I’m choosing #4. I think it’s backwards. Although I don’t want to be near a snake, I think I would consider shaking a snake at me far less dangerous than throwing one at me. And it could very well be more dangerous to the one throwing the snake if I were a violent person. Yeah, the others are crazy, but this one seems mixed up, which leads me to think it is also made up.
